Hope they are correct.

Brisbane won’t suffer a Grand Final hangover

We’re in the midst of one of the weirdest streaks in footy history - because a reigning premier hasn’t even won ONE final the year afterwards since Richmond completed its back-to-back in 2020. Melbourne went out in straight sets, and Geelong and Collingwood missed out entirely; whether that’s because of how long seasons are these days and they weren’t able to prepare properly for the defence, or because the competition is just so tight, we’re not sure. But we’re sure that Brisbane is way too good to miss out on the top eight in 2025, and should be amongst the contenders again. Just look at the players missing from the premiership 23 - underrated ruck Oscar McInerney, Keidean Coleman (who was brilliant in the 2023 finals run), boom recruit Tom Doedee, key veterans like Linc McCarthy and Darcy Gardiner, plus the new faces like Levi Ashcroft (who’s supposed to be just as good as Will). Joe Daniher’s absence is the only thing keeping us from predicting Brisbane going back-to-back, because he was absolutely pivotal to the 2024 flag (and not just with his game-winning semi-final against GWS). Who’ll usurp the Lions?

The amount of guys in rehab at the moment gives me reason for concern. They might be right to play by opening round but we've seen plenty of times with other clubs how having interrupted/limited preseasons can cause further problems in-season.

They'll be right 😎

A bit of a mixture to finish off 2024.
A positive 2024 all round for the Brisbane Lions
AFL premiers
AFLW runners up
VFL PF loss

But no $1 million payday for McClelland trophy that went to the Hawks.
Hawks Lost SF in AFL, lost SF in AFLW. The VFL don't count towards the McClelland but the Hawks (Box Hill) loss in EF.

Just need to wait for the annual report.
A profit has been mentioned.
A decision pending (probably decided by now) to pay off all debt or show a better profit and put some funds back into BHA

On the Supporter base the largest city often comes out on top being Sydney.
The low North base plummeted even further by a huge 30.7%.

Looking at Brisbane compared to combined clubs from Perth and Adelaide:
Eagles + Perth combined in 2023 we were 296K behind them. In 2024 we made up ground and only 69k behind.
Crows + Port combined in 2023 we were 126k behind them. However, in 2024 we are now 69k in front.

I thought i would see how Stats Insider rated the Lions players.
Stats Insider use short- and long-term data to arrive at a rating.
So not 2024 ratings as such. Cripps probably wins that.
There will be other lists, and they will not be the same as each use a different method.
The top 10

The PF teams from 2024
Lions had 6 in the top 50 and 8 in top 100 less Joe in 2025.
Swans had 4 top 50 and 7 in top 100.
Port had 4 top 50 and 5 top 100.
Cats had 5 top 50 and 8 top 100

Neale 1, Dunkley 36. Big gap. Says TEAM does it not?

The highest paid player in the AFL rated at number 143 😂. Must be the greatest overpayment of a player in history. Another masterful pick up by Essendon
That's Ben McKay.
Even when you isolate his position "key defender" he is 19th. Andrews is rated 3 behind Sicily and Wilkie.

What ranking position do Lions players sit in each category.

Ruck: Oscar 4th behind Gawn
Midfield: Neale 1st
General Forward: Rayner 5th behind Rankine
Key Defender: Andrews 3rd behind Sicily
Key Forward: Joe 4th (Hippy next at 25th) behind J Cameron
General Defender: Wilmot 26th behind D. Houston

What is Lester’s category and ranking ?

What is the criteria?

AFL Player Ratings

Stats Insider has devised its own objective, data-driven AFL player ratings system to help footy fans understand who the best players in the competition are. The AFL player ratings system uses both short-term and long-term data to provide a dynamic rating system. At the completion of every game, Stats Insider collates votes, assesses performance and compares data to help evaluate AFL player rankings.

What is the criteria?
Who knows but just a couple of observations. We have only one player in the top 35 which you'd think is unusual for a team good enough to win the flag.

Scratching my head at the massive underestimation of Starcevich who has to be just about the best small defender going around. Certainly the best small lockdown defender.

"collates votes" 🤔

It looks like we have a new recruit in Logan Evans. Hopefully he can play 2nd or 3rd tall forward.

BRISBANE

Eric Hipwood

A pretty obvious choice this, a lot is going to rest on Eric Hipwood’s shoulders in 2025 following Joe Daniher’s retirement.
Ever since Daniher arrived in 2021, Hipwood has played second fiddle inside 50, but now he’s got to be the main tall target.
While he’ll be supported by the likes of Logan Evans, Charlie Cameron, Kai Lohmann, Zac Bailey and potentially even Sam Day, life is going to be very different for the 27-year-old against the opposition’s number-one defender.
If he can somewhat step into Daniher’s shoes and kick 45+ goals while competing well in the air, then the Lions are every chance of going back-to-back.
If he struggles without his tall partner and Brisbane no longer have a strong focal point inside 50, then it puts a huge dent in their premiership hopes.
There’s no doubt he’s got the talent to do it and 2025 could just be the making of the tall forward.

Small lock down players don't tend to generate a lot of stats for these sort of ranking systems to work off - best way would be to see the statistical reduction in performance of their opposition. But that's too difficult for most systems.

Is there a minimum number of games for this one. As you would assume Lohman and Ashcroft are rising up the ranks a lot but have to over come the small sample before they pass more established players
