With respect, therein lies the problem. It's not a matter of just one fact; there are plenty of factors behind the decision, including having a Vixens player's home club represented on the day. Not arguing Gisborne's worthiness, they are more than worthy. But it's hard to ignore other factors.

The bulk - almost al of the Gisborne players play VNL too, all but one for a Melbourne-based team, so perhaps unfair on them. I think there's something else at play here too. The Vixens just signed a Sandhurst player (Charlotte Sexton) so makes sense having her local club play from a pathways...

Spoke to a club rep this morning. While I see no conspiracy, the Bulldogs were not asked to be part of the day. As stated earlier, the heavy Strikers representation among Sandhurst and K-Flat would likely have been a big factor. Pretty much eight players in a squad of 13, plus one from under 23s.

Just go out and buy a decent ruck - we can’t develop ‘em. Nothing wrong with Nank, Big Ivan, Staff, Troy the Boy, Gregory Dear.

Personally, I’d love to have seen Gissy play. They are the benchmark. At a guess, K-Flat and Sandhurst supply three quarters of the Bendigo Strikers team, 8 of 12 or 13, so a good opportunity to showcase both the league and the local VNL affiliation.

Saw Port Adelaide play Richmond at Malseed Park in Mt Gambier as recently as 2017. As much as I love West Gambier and their home ground, the QEO and indeed Maryborough and Canterbury Park would all be far better venues for an AFL-sanctioned game than Malseed Park, which has no grandstand by the way.

I think the Essendon visit included a couple of school visits in Castlemaine for a few hours each, but that might have been the extent of it.

True that. I know the Sunraysia league plays a Good Friday game, always South Mildura and Irymple, with the teams alternating years as the host. Biggest crowd for the year with the exception of the grand final and maybe one other final. Easter Saturday, crowds revert to a normal home and away...
