Leigh McCartney, who was South Melbourne's captain and best player for season 1976, died on 10 August 1976 aged 18. He was just voted BOG in a match vs Melbourne and had an accident. He never regained consciousness and died. He played in the same South Under 19s team in 1976 with Terry Daniher...
I'm doing some research into VFL/AFL players who died young.
I didn't feature several players from pre 1940 when, sometimes players even died during their playing career, or not long after.
Please share your stories and memories.

Bruce McAvaney played for Woodville’s Under 19s in the SANFL in 1972. Craig Bradley’s father, Lionel was the coach and a 8 year old Craig Bradley was the mascot!
1997 Talking Footy clip with Craig Bradley reminiscing about McAvaney's playing days for the Woodville under 19s.
This may be true but they didn't reveal the vote for each round until 1984. Before they simply read out votes 3, 2 or 1 but didn't assign them to rounds.
Carlton only lost 2 games in the entire 1995 and destroyed Nth in the Prelim and Geelong in the Grand Final.
For a team that was so dominate, it's surprising that they didn't have anyone finish in the top 5 in the Brownlow.
Kouta was Carlton's highest vote getter with 12 votes (he finished...

Having sorted through the available statistics for all 22 games in 1980, it is fair to say that Raines’ favouritism for the Brownlow may have been wishful thinking.
Should Raines have won the 1980 Brownlow?
No, he shouldn’t have, and looking at the performances of his teammates on the days...

Nah, in 2007 Vandenberg was definitely dropped or not selected in the team due to poor form.
In 2007, he played rounds 7,8 13, 14 & 15 in the Hawthorn reserves (Box Hill) and in the Hawthorn seniors in round 6, 17-19, 21-22, EF & SF.
2007 was the last season he played.
Was Chris Thredgold dropped for the Preliminary final team or the Grand Final team? I thought he played in the Prelim and was dropped for the GF?
Seamus Moloney replaced him as captain for the GF?
Pretty harsh as Thredgold had been captain for 8 years straight and Sturt won their first flag in...

Rex also excelled...

Stretton played most centre half back but only played 3 games in 1947 and didn't play in the game vs Melbourne when Fanning booted 18 goals.
Fred Fanning's record 18-goal haul for Melbourne against St Kilda at the Junction Oval is a landmark which has now stood for 55 years, and will probably...
