There are some decent budget options on the FA market. Trouble is they really need someone to ruck as well.
A healthy Taberner wouldn’t be the worst option. When was the last time he was healthy again?
No one should get anything, for anyone. Compensation is a joke and can never be fair.
Why should all the clubs behind them in the draft be penalized for their inability to create and environment that the player wants to stay in?
It’s being manipulated by clubs and by the AFL whenever it suits...
That’s a lot of tall timber and not a lot of leg speed if he plays as well.
If you have 2 that can genuinely impact forward then that’s fine. I’m not sure Teakle offers enough when forward to justify it. I get it last year when you had so few marking options to support Larkey. But I’d prefer to...
I agree with Comben playing back. He was the best thing they had going back there last season.
Back-up ruck a concern?
Could they rely on Comben doing it from defence?
Really no other options in that proposed line-up.
Can Logue, Corr and Archer handle most talls for the small stretches that...
Agreed. They had very few who could hold their heads up high. Rowbottom wasn’t one of the worst, but he was still below his usual output.
Fox was the one guy who played above expectations. Got to give that guy his flowers, might’ve played the two best games of his life in losing grand finals
I agree with your general sentiment.
However, can I put forward Membrey instead of Darling?
Doesn’t shift the needle either way, but on exposed form, Membrey looks to have a little more left in the tank than Darling
I like it for Melbourne.
Plays fwd/ruck. Allows Van Rooyen to play permanent forward.
Van Rooyen, Derksen and Fritsch is looking better than they have had.
I’d move Petty back.
Better yet, they build a time machine and go back and take Adelaide’s 2 1st rd picks for him 🤭
Depends on your expectations. I don’t think they’re bringing them in expecting that they will instantly march up the ladder. Culture setters. Role models. Leaders. Anything you get out of them on the field is a bonus
To be fair, they have tried to find genuine size in defence. Had a real crack at Barrass, and seemingly went pretty close to getting him to agree. It’s not as if they don’t know it’s an area of weakness, but it takes 2 to tango.
Concerningly, they got torched by small and medium forwards...
Agree.
Like I said, only way a trade happens is if a team identify him early enough and offer a late pick, perhaps one they don’t intend to use themselves, to bring him in. No need to give up assets for someone you can get for free.
I guess the other way would be if he gets tied up in some sort...
Think he'll end up on a list. Most likely as a rookie via DFA.
Only way HFC could return anything would be a token late pick just to make his the transaction easy.
Not sure he is up to it.
He's an ordinary kick, and despite his excellent endurance, he's pretty slow.
I've never seen him play as a small defender.
He's improved as a forward, played a couple of impactful games in that role but plenty of others in which he has been virtually unsighted. Can tag effectively, obviously...
I actually think he’s a pretty perfect fit, at least in terms of role. Fogarty and Thilthorpe then Lukosious as the hybrid third tall. Important to have particularly for when Thilthorpe relieves in the ruck.
His ability to fill other roles and play in other areas means he theoretically never...
I think they are motivated, yes. From the sense of his value likely never being higher than it is now. Coming off a year of relative health and solid form. Being one of their only viable trade assets with real value. WCE’s need to acquire draft assets to accelerate a list build still in its...
I actually don't think this one will prove to be all that difficult.
Both teams are pretty motivated to make a deal, for their own reasons.
Might be one where both sides are a little disappointed with the eventual price, the sign of a fair deal being done.
I forgot about Read. He looks impressive. Will take time to put on some weight, but will be a very able replacement for Witts moving forward. You are quite right though, will likely get opportunity as a fwd/ruck next year
Seems to be a real opportunity for a a fwd/ruck at GC. That's why Casboult hung around for so long. Not sure Mac Andrew is the long-term play relieving in the ruck. What is that old Paganism, "You don't send a Ferrari to plough a field".
Well worth a punt for them.
GWS wouldn't be the worst...
I thought similarly of Gunston, and he proved me wrong this year. Perhaps the same will happen with Darling.
Interesting what happens with Comben. Back or Forward? Reserve ruck becomes a question too
How you feel about the Darling thing?
I get the basic principle of adding some experience. Good role models, true pros, makes sense in that way. The pursuit of Parker, Pendlebury etc. And I get the need for some support for Larkey too. Just not sure Darling has anything left to give
Does seem to be the sort of move that North should be exploring.
Good upside. Relatively modest money. Not a huge price via trade.
I'd prefer something like this to Darling
Agree with everything you and others are saying. Half backs who can use the ball and run has been a need for a long time. Small forward too, though quality ones aren’t easy to find. Perhaps in the draft?
I quite liked the look of Budarick before his injury. Shaping as a decent, accountable small...
Purely in terms of fit and role, I think Sydney would be the best fit I can think of.
Give them the chance to play one fewer tall forward and replace them with a hybrid like Stringer. Can also take his turn through the middle obviously which is a bonus.
Can't see Sydney having the cap space to...
