Kane usually goes after big players for 'in the gun' and they seem to often come good - Jeremy Cameron was one earlier in the year, also Rayner before his hot streak if I remember right.
Kudos Jarryd - and thanks so much for your contributions to the Lions. I'll always think extra fondly of the players who came over before success was guaranteed or even likely. Not sure from where but I remember a joke maybe from some podcast that the Lions' centre bounce strategies were...
Interesting that Lions ended up first on points from turnover differential - Daniel Hoyne from Champion Data seems to rate that over any other single metric partly because it holds up in the fierce pace and contested nature of finals. There will be a heap of turnovers, and basically you need to...
Not sure what time but Dunks mentioned on his podcast with Adam Treloar that he can't go to the Brisbane VFL game (with Kyle Dunkley playing) on Saturday because they have training that day.
I think the last point is the key element - I think Buckley said on SEN pretty much everything was locked down bar a few last head-to-head line ball calls in the AA selection meeting 3 weeks ago. Rankine was probably in then. After he then dropped below the games threshold I suspect they just...
I like this theory - to break a mental tick you just give someone a small change that they think makes the difference - like Dumbo with his magic feather I suppose. If we see Lions players tugging their left ear lobe gently before running in to kick for goal we'll know it's their magic feather...
I reckon I'm going to have the strangest game day experience going round. We're travelling at the moment and wife is running the Reykjavik Marathon today, which starts in about 1.5 hours - 8.40am our time. I'm recovering from an Achilles tear so I'm going to walk the half-marathon in solidarity...
I agree. I get that sports fandom can lean towards the negative (at the end of the day the person we feel most sorry for when we lose is ourselves) but we still have a great shot here. The difference between 4th and 5th is basically one more away game, and only if we would have won week 1 to...
Had to check - it's called the Brisbane Lions fancast. I use Podcast Addict as an app but I'm sure it would be available elsewhere. It's genuinely just a couple of fans so don't expect anything polished but I quite like throwing it on - tbh usually after a win!
In the interest of balance, I think it's a well structured and fun podcast that I look forward to listening to each week. I thought the crystal ball being managed and the tea leaves coming in was fun light comedy, obviously that's not their one wood but better than just furrowed-brow seriousness...
If we do play Daniher forward, I wonder if thinking comes from not whether Hippy or Joe is better back, but more which of their roles Henry Smith can more easily replace. In that lens sending Joey back so Smith plays deep forward and second ruck, instead of a hard running mobile second tall...
I played a bit of basketball and often saw teams play poor offense because they were too fixated on a mismatch they are trying to take advantage of. Usually a height mismatch but could be speed on the outside or a poor defender to target. What happens is the players' minds get overcomplicated...
Thanks for your work, I wouldn't be able to do that gig! Big improvement from days of old where it was a rare thrill if a Lions reserves game was shown at all usually against the NT Thunder from memory. As an occasional reserves watcher the commentary helps a great deal to learn which ones are...
Spot the bureaucrat with a malnourished creative instinct  It was fun though, thanks for the feedback all.
I do think the sub question is really interesting - feels like any of Fletcher, Reville, Morris or Ah Chee as the obvious candidates would be unfair...!
The approach briztoon suggests above sounds good to me, but if we did move on I don't think delisting him at this stage is callous or undermines culture. He was always a project player, and one that may still come good, but fundamentally needs to be able to play to have value. It sounds harsh...
Well the AFL has finally realised that the Lions are on the charge to September by giving them the primetime slot of 4.10pm on Sunday 7 July to take on the Adelaide Crows. In honour of this momentous occasion, I have turned to the Bard to take us through a match preview.
The Setting
There is...
Or his running mate Bart McCullough, who I'm pretty sure comes up in one of Fevola's stories where Fev wanted his player number, was told no by Bart, and Fev replied no worries I'll get it after you get delisted at the end of year. Some great team cohesion there. Both of course gone before the...
Amazing from Hippy, not impossible he moves well into the top 5 of that list, or even as high as 2nd with a few more good years.
Pretty sure though that Lynch's number should be higher, I'm sure I remember Browny saying that the official club stats don't count some of his goals for Fitzroy when...
This is correct and really important to emphasise. There isn't a concept of percentage Indigenous in Australia, nor should there be. As others have mentioned, the horrendous policies of our governments right up to the 1970s (as a formal law) was to assimilate and re-home Indigenous people 'for...
Alright, as a long time mostly lurker I'll take the chance! Happy with the Adelaide game as the next available, will give it a red hot go and hope it's not just a hot mess
Just for an alternate view I listened to all of Crunchtime and I think Laura Kane handled herself really well and is a strong performer. I have no real belief gender played any part in her promotion.
The points system is manifestly unfair and if I were a club competing against Brisbane I would...
Love the McCluggage re-signing - flexibility in longer-term players is key as you never know what else you have or will have. Can play inside mid, outside mid, wing very effectively and while untried could surely play half-back or half-forward with aplomb later in his career. That sort of money...
Surely a draw is way better than a win, not sure why others are disagreeing? Even despite morale and being away from home. Four teams likely to be between 5-10 now have a draw to their names, if we'd lost we would need an extra win to get past any of Bombers, Pies or the Crows in a race for...
Just chiming in that I thought the Roar Deal with Fagan was excellent and despite inhaling all Lions news I still learnt a few things like why Dev stayed, the ongoing indecision re tall forward structure and Fagan just consistently showing mature compassionate leadership. Good stuff.
FYI that was Craig Jennings I think, was a great feature on the Whateley show until he went back to clubland. Sanderson was good replacement but not at the same level of insight I reckon
Sounds interesting, I'll look that up. In my head a big jump was with Mick Malthouse leading up to the 2010 premiership, in particular to be able to use Dane Swan in repeated 4 minute bursts before he got gassed.
Doubt there is any chance he doesn't pick us. But waiting makes sense for him - if I was his agent I'd use 'the decision' as a chance to build his profile and get a few extra articles and mentions on radio/tv. Also for the Lions its a good news story in the back pocket, maybe for after a loss or...
