Autopsy “You’re Shit at Dying” Freo Trounce the Hawks

He had 6 CBAs
Yes that was pleasing but he needs to be our number one CBA mid for the rest of the season. Let him rest at FF maybe for spells. I’d be going 70:30 mid:forward split. Basically replace David Mundy from last year.
Playing Fyfe full forward is like playing Lionel Messi at centre back in football. It doesn’t make any sense!
His ability to make the right decision in the contest when he has the ball is so elite still.

Hopefully but the issue there is MJ and Ras are at least 3 or 4 years away from competing with the Petracca and Bont types. What are we going to do in the meantime? Like, I loved Ras game tonight but he looked a good 12kg of muscle off where he needs to get to. It will be 2028 before he gets there.
2028 is a stretch but that’s just how drafting works. It takes time to come on, there’s not any other fix. We aren’t trading in any 190cm + midfield guns, the only ones that exist from WA are Cripps, Fyfe, Johnson and Ginbey.

I think Johnson is going to be a b grade AFL player from next year and A grade the year after, agree with Taylor Ras will be a year after for each

Dropping Sturt was stupid. This could have been a perfect opportunity for him to get 10-15 possessions and a couple of goals to build some confidence.

No way Fyfe's fitness level is anywhere near ready for full time mid at the moment.

You could add Jackson to that mix.

Johnson may skip being a B grader. Good kick, good mark, quick, elusive, big tackler, sees the game well. Once he gets 25+ on a regular basis he'll be a huge influence.

From what I gathered there were 7 centre bounces from when Fyfe came on, and he attended all but one of them. Looks like the coaching staff recognise that we need him there now.

Did not realise we were down i50s by 10 in the first half. And still managed to be five goals up. 63% efficiency i50 for the game. Can we play the hawks every week...

I thought Luke Ryan's kicking was very good this game. Rarely saw the long down the line kick, punched a few which opened the game up. Even the kickins were so much better.

Ethan Hughes time on the wing has probably expanded his game quite a bit, especially in terms of moving the ball on quicker.

Erasmus looks strong in the contest. How do we fit both him and MJ in the starting 22
Erasmus, Fyfe,Omeara, Johnson, Brayshaw, Serong.

Are they flexible enough to all play in the same 22.

I liked brayshaw more forward, Omeara more forward. Erasmus and Johnson can push forward. Fyfe plays forward, I think it is ok and should improve midfield run

Definitely made a structural change in the past couple weeks with Hughes spending majority in the backline. Works much better that way. Especially with Driz building into it.
Although that's more wanting to get the personnel mix right rather than structural per se. Structurally they've probably always looked for their wings to ignite and support dynamic ball movement. Hughes is more a solid citizen and not much of an igniter and probably still more base level with supporting the ball movement. Getting into backline mode is his one wood.

Surely Erasmus and Johnson can push to the wings at times. Serong was talked up being a forward mid hybrid when drafted so perhaps he could do a Toby Greene impersonation for a 20% of the time.

How much longer will Fyfe and Walters go around?

Aish was a full time winger and Hughes played full time back man.

The coaching staff were quite rigid early with the CBA of Serong, Brayshaw, JOM and Darcy.who got dominated.

We saw some CBA from Scultz, Switkowski, Erasmus, and Jackson (?). Once Fyfe came on he had plenty.

That was Brayshaw back to his elite best, but he doesn’t win many clearances. He is part of the issue. jOM too but he seems a better centre square player than Brayshaw.

Erasmus was surprisingly good at tackling for a 19 year old. He has a massive tank and the team seemed to avoid passing to him despite him running to space a lot. Twice he was absolutely clear and they didn’t execute the simple pass, I don’t think he’s got the trust of the group yet disposal wise. Both times the player who ignored him turned it over. It would be very frustrating for him.

The wings were interesting, I only saw Aish and NOD but wasn’t paying attention. Aish for me is a weak link.

So may positives in tonight's game.

Firstly how good was it to have a game against an undermanned team around the same age and experience as us and get a big win. A confidence building win.

Secondly, the young fellas in Jackson, Amiss, Erasmus, Walker, Driz! How good to see them all playing well together. Many more to come and can't wait for Jonno to join them.

Thirdly, easy to see that our gameplan is quick and attacking if we're allowed to apply it. Too often this year against older, bigger and more experienced opponents we haven't been able to apply it leading to unfair criticism of our coaches.

Lastly, there was a lot of angst about Hughes and Banfield getting a game this week and I think both did their job. Proving once again that the coaches really do know better than us.

Once we get our best out there and develop together we'll be good again. It'll take awhile but we'll get there as shown tonight. Onwards and upwards.
Loved this post Scham. It has been really disappointing reading the vitriol on this board about Banfield during this past week. Give the guy a break. in spite of the fact that his confidence must be in the toilet from some of the hideous stuff (bloody sadistic) said about him he still managed to play really well tonight.

Well done Bailey.

We should turn a Chapman into a midfielder. He could be a gun there has all the skills and aggression to be an inside/outside midfielder with polish. 193cm.

It was an important win to keep everyone’s spirits up after a tough season so far. The starlight kids were great too and there was a real feel-good atmosphere around after the game which you could easily pick up through the broadcast. After a crappy few weeks where fans were getting annoyed and frustrated, it buys the coaching team a bit of time.
However that was as soft a kill as you will ever get at AFL level. Some of the stuff Hawks were doing was so poor it was hard to believe. When Frost pushed Amiss over for that 50m pen early on, after Sicily had given away a similar dumb one to Treacy, I genuinely wondered were they deliberately doing it? It’s a bold strategy by hawthorn to become so uncompetitive in the hunt for one player and I think they are many years away from contention.

We were just monstered at clearance (again) by the worst team in the AFL. We are too ******* small in the midfield and Fyfe just has to go back in there. He’s a clearance beast, but a pretty ordinary forward. I want Fyfe at Darcy’s feet roving as much as possible because he’s still the best player on the Fremantle list in that role. End of story.
Anyone who thinks we can go out on the MCG in 3 weeks with our midget brigade midfield of JOM, Brayshaw, Serong and Aish, against Petracca, Oliver, Viney and gawn/Grundy needs to get off the Kool aid. They will just stand there laughing at our dwarves before beating us by 60 points. Fyfe has to play mainly midfield.
We actually won total clearances by 1 and the around ground clearances fairly comfortably. At 1/4 time it was something like 9-2 centre clearances to the hawks so we also won that over the last 3/4.
Hawthorn are pretty good inside so it was a step foward.

I’m not sure we need to:

Brayshaw (23 y.o. 185cm)
Serong (22 y.o. 179cm)
O’Driscoll (20 y.o 188cm)
Johnson (20 y.o. 192cm)
Erasmus (19 y.o. 190cm)

We’ve got height and size coming through, they are just super young. This quintet of players are premiership material in the right age bracket. We need a 6th like Ed Langdon, elite endurance runner, preferably with good skills.

We’ve also got:

Brodie (24 y.o. 190cm)
Aish (27 y.o. 183cm)
JOM (29 y.o. 184cm)
Fyfe (31 y.o. 191cm)

At the moment the older quartet are playing within themselves for a variety of reasons. Brodie hasn’t captured last years form. He was elite in the GC match up when he came on, but other games has been below his best last year. JOM has been disappointing but his last 2 games have been his best thus far. Hopefully he’s building chemistry. You do expect a 29 year old to hit peak straight away, but maybe that’s over asking. Aish is meh at the moment. He gets shifted around and generally under performs in most positions. He gets a lot of credits for curtailing an injured Oliver last year. We all love Fyfe and hopefully this is the end of his recurrent injuries.

We’ve got an enigma in Henry, I’m not sure he makes it. I think Worner could become that hard running winger. I’m not sure his disposal is better than Ed Langdon, but you could live with that.

There isn’t a lot of depth, I wouldn’t mind drafting some more mids, in a perfect world the younger O’Driscoll gives good Freo vibes and might be there around our first pick this year. That would round off the midfield quite nicely.
