I'm sure there's been a squillion threads on this already but I'm new and I just noticed that in the "Best 22 08" thread lots of people have Johnson either on the pine or not in the side at all. I think he's definitely in our best 22 somewhere, but who do we think will take over as captain next year (if not Johnson). There's no standout for me, Deledio has shown nothing to suggest he's leadership material, especially in interviews and stuff, and Foley might be too young. Who else we got? Give it to Bowden for a couple of years?

Surely not the great man in Richo.....?

Richo for me!

Newman, Brown, Bowden the other canditates - if Simmo or Cogs didn't have to worry so much about the comebacks from injury, they would also be good prospects.

I really just don't hope they give it to a Deledio or Foley just yet. I don't want to wear them down at such a young age

Definitely not Richo. Sets a shocking example for the younger players.

Just some hard ass nut who is 100% dedicated to the club and sets a great example off field.

People have said Newman. Bit of a risky one IMO. I do think, if given the captaincy, he would grow into a better player. Not injury prone like other captains in the league. Not sure if I would go with Newy though. Perhaps someone like Browny or Joel Bowden for a couple of years until a younger bloke gets old enough to take the lead.

No one like Deledio though. Hes far too young.

richo is our current b&f winner and busts a gut for the club week in week out he is also one player that hates losing.

Johnson cops a lot of stick, but he is professional on the training track and played half the season with a broken hand.

He might not kick huge goals, he may make mistakes by foot - but in the worst tackling team in the league ... he tackles. In the team that is worst at manning up and playing one-on-one ... he mans up and plays one-one-one. In a team where too many blokes don't put their head over the footy ... he puts his head over the footy.

I still think he is the least-worst candidate.

Agreed.

We have the discussion every year.

Every year I try to draw a distinction between how good a PLAYER is and how good a CAPTAIN someone is.

Judd exceptional player without peer. Captain? Well his club descended into a mass of drug allegations on his watch including his best mate Kerr. So bad he walked out of them because he couldn't / wouldn't deal with it. Maybe he was too focussed on his own game to be a good captain?

Our On-Field-Star might be worse than most. But that is why Johnson gets condemned. Because in many people's mind Captain=On Field Star=Best Player.
