That's not a bad place to start. No-one plays big inside minutes early in their career. Just needs to get on the paddock.

Caleb strong did. Jai Newcombe did.

No one plays it if the players there are really good or if they aren’t injured. But hawthorn showed that if you get rid your existing players the new ones can do it through time and experience. With hawthorn that meant a losing season.

But with us given that our mids can’t win it at the coal face anyway maybe it’s irrelevant

I’m absolutely not expecting Sheldrick can do what Neale was doing to the level he was doing it yesterday, but if you watch Neale’s quick hands and ground ball winning and explosive run from contest to contest, that is what we need at least to a serviceable level. The only player on the list who you could argue could provide it to some level is Sheldrick. He’s gotta have a massive offseason and make himself indisputable for round one.

One appears happy to do the bare minimum of what is required of him. Plenty of other senior players have returned already
Do you have any idea how Chad is spending his time in Perth, other than one publicised round of golf? I don’t think you can accuse Chad of not working hard in previous off-seasons, away from the club as well as at the club.

He & his brother have been working with a PT at a gym down in my old hood Dunsborough, all off-season.

One was required to be training under the terms of the CBA. The other wasn’t.
Yeah, I know. My comment was firmly tongue-in-cheek.

Having said that - it doesn't change my view that I don't like the optics of Chad playing golf with a rival CEO who is trying to entice him away from his current club. Especially when many of his teammates are already back doing the hard slog in training.

He should be in the team round 1. Regardless of who is already there. Play him on ball. Him and Rowy and Heens will be a fearsome trio.
If you configure a midfield like this (ToG%):
Whoisit? Mid Forward Back Bench
Heeney 60. 20. 0. 20
Mills 70. 0. 10. 20
Rowbottom 80. 0. 0. 20
Sheldrick 60. 10. 0. 30
Warner 30. 50. 0. 20
I think that could work just fine. Mills can drop back as the spare when the opposition gets a run on. Sheldrick will probably need slightly lower ToG% but can do a couple of stints forward. Warner mostly forward (maybe wing for CBs?) with occasional visits (swap with Heeney?).
Enough there to totally change our approach.
