Re: #15: Courtenay Dempsey - "The form of his career" (Kong)

I didn't really say that, did I?
I was saying Dempsey's added more defending to his game, his strengths now being harrassing and pressing and tackling, rather than the flat-out, one way rebounder that he used to be.
I don't think I'd disagree with that, this year, though.

I thought our tussle was me comparing him to Yarran, and you saying he was more of a stay at home defender.

i dunnno know

Tread carefully, Slattery, here is a pic of Kong getting ready to use his ban stick.

That said, I think Dempsey has had a huge turn around, and if looking a great player for us now.

Always thought people were unfairly harsh on Dempsey's apparent lack of accountability. Rather he was just playing Knights' game plan and got exposed.
Don't think there's any miraculous change in his ability. New game plan and this doesn't happen.
No doubt he's fitter than ever though.

has been brilliant this year. not just his defensive work, but his offensive work as well. he has lost none of his evasiveness/agility, and his kicking is superb. i can hardly remember him making a skill error this year.

he also seems to be more selective on when he goes/stays at home, and i would assume this has been mainly down to better coaching. seem to remember an article pre-season as well that he's got his life off the field sorted as well, which has made him more at peace with himself and more focused on football than in the past

important cog in our flag tilt, the next few seasons. makes me realise how much we missed him last year though. however, maybe the year off was the best for him, who knows.

Think Kong is being harsh.

Dempsey's biggest issue was defensive accountability - And this seems to have been addressed - Think that the zone/press system helps his style of play.

YACO ,

What has happened between you and kong?

You used to have some great discussions !

Not enough credit is given to his changed role, either. Knights simply didn't seem to want him to play close and defend, he saw him as a loose running defender and nothing more.

Dempsey may well be playing harder, tougher and smarter footy, but it's unfair to assume that he has changed 180 degrees when Knights never really put him in a position to demonstrate it before.

Not really that he didn't want Dempsey to defend, more so that he couldn't get him to do it.

I recall Lloyd saying that Knights would always give Dempsey the worst forward because he wouldn't play close enough and would always get caught ball watching.

Says a fair bit about Knights I reckon. And Hird for that matter.

So am I harsh or am I correct?

Harsh.

Everyone has acknowledged his defensive accountability - to his direct opponent was his weakness - Strangely he has always been adept at helping out teammates/being third man up/ putting his body on the line in aerial contests.

So in a nutshell he is playing SMARTER and respecting his direct opponent.

I agree with those who are citing a remarkable defensive improvement.

The fact that Dempsey has been so ridiculously good this year has generally clouded judgement. He caused many to tear their hair out with his lack of defensive efforts in years past.

It isn't to take anything away from Courtney. It is actually an acknowledgement of the massive improvement in his game since the start of last year (obviously we missed our on most of 2011).

The new man title is maybe the most accurate title that has been used so far this year.

If anything, his vast improvement has vindicated those who criticized him. Same goes for a few players such as NLM and Dyson. Those who mindlessly defended them against valid criticism have been proven wrong, rather than right, IMO.

i think many of the people who defended him, did so based on his obvious potential as a defender. by way of comparison, i think people criticised slattery, because it seemed like he had no potential.

so i would say the opposite is true, but that's just me.

Most impressive thing about his BOG performance yesterday was that he ran out the game better than anyone, but didn't lose any pace as the game went on. Not sure if it was because he's fitter than anyone realised or it was a Ryder on ANZAC Day style "you're the man now" performance without Fletcher and Stanton, but it was bloody exciting.

If he can take that sense of ownership of both defence and run and carry forward, even if he's not getting it 25 times a week he'd be a top 10 most important player for us.

Nearly everything he did oozed class. His final quarter efforts were incredible.

dat goal

I have a confession to make, and it is that Dempsey's form this season has been my fault.

After round 2 I brought him into my SC team, where he promptly strained his hammy. His season since has been ok, nothing more. I needed to trade my way into finals so I got rid of him last week. 1st week out of the Southpark Cows and look what he does.

Sorry guys.

When he plays like that Dempsey is awesome.

We just need him to bottle the composure because he is among the best rebounding defenders in the game in that sort of form.

I found the mopping up to be just as if not more impressive. He was everywhere in that final quarter.

If Stanton had played, we'd have won by 5 goals with those two driving it long in the final quarter.

As I see it the composure sees him stay in the aerial battles and cleanly winning ground level ball.

He pretty much always does well when he is fed the ball. It is when he wins it that he looks like quite an amazing player.

Showed leadership in defence I havent seen from him before, I hope it wasn't a one off because Fletcher was out.

Keep it up Demps!!

I did the same with Stanton, so expect him to rack up 40+ against Norf.

Pack your things gents.
