I think he needs to be transitioned to a wing for 2022...

Trying to carry him, Rioli and Mansell in a back 6 is just too much.

I actually would love to see him turn his game into Isaac Smith's running wingman game...

So much more damaging getting it on the wing and then running and kicking to the forward half...
Also agree, not because he is no good down back, he gives us drive, but as you say the smalls down back look okay, but our wings are rather average. Short can get the ball and with his extra length by foot can kick it over the back which forwards like. Need some new tricks for a new season, wouldn't mind Stack having a go on the other side as well. Opposite to Short in that he is a very creative kick, so keep defences guessing. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

Trial him on a wing FFS! Would love to see Shorty and Ralphsmith on the wings as we need some genuine attacking drive. I honestly can't remember the Tigers having great wingers? We need to evolve and completely change the way we play as every team has studied us and knows what to expect. We have Mansell and Dan Rioli as HBF now. A few years ago you could almost bank on Short hovering around a bloke 55 out and calling for it and I vaguely remember one game he did it 3 times all sailed through.

Yeah I agree. With Rioli and Mansell looking promising down back it's time to shift him further up the ground.

Dunno if you'd ever call them genuine wingers, but Matty Knights was good up and down the ground, Michael 'Butch' Gale was a good winger.

We also had a bloke named Stuey Maxfield who got poached...

Not sure about Shorty but not a terrible idea. His kicking from outside 50 has gone downhill recently but if he can get it back a bit could be a damaging weapon. Would suck to lose Kmac but as people have said, can't just keep playing him for his occasional Kmac moments.

I've been saying Short to the wing for a long time... It would be massive for us.

Just look back to the 2020 GF, he was as effective as he was, because he was getting the footy on the wing, and driving it long.
And they are not just long bombs either, low, fast penetrating kicks which mean less time for the Oppo to set up the defensive structure.

Last year it just seemed most of his possessions were in the D50 and he was bailing out towards the boundary, minimal effect.

Don’t mind the idea. Needs something to reinvigorate him, he’s a good player and 2021 was a bad year for him.

The stand rule saw Shorty turn into even more of a chip scab, and his kicking fell away, he’s lucky CD conisider anything over 40m an effective kick, or his disposal efficiency would of plummeted.
There’s defiantly a time and place for being a chip scab, but he was taking the easy stats far too often and his kicking this year didn’t warrant him having a license to do that.

And this way at least if he is turning it over it will be into our FWD pocket and not us losing possession on the wing like we did so often this year.

Didn’t realise shorty was unrestricted FA this year , will attract plenty of interest you’d expect. Hope he sticks with the tigers but I wouldn’t see us matching any Zac Williams type offers. That said the squeeze still remains with tpp cuts those deals are pretty yesterday now. Reckon we d offer him 500 x 4

2022 will be his 7th year, pretty sure you need to be out of contract in your 8th year to be a free agent.

Not sure soldo should be there after signing for 3 , here’s the list

RICHMOND

Ivan Soldo*

Jack Riewoldt

Jayden Short*

Kane Lambert*

Shane Edwards

Trent Cotchin

Actually it is Short’s 8th year, for some reason they refer to the rookie draft held at the end of 2014 as the 2015 rookie draft.

I wonder if Lambert or Short are in top 25% paid players on the list?

2022 FREE AGENTS

*Can qualify as a restricted free agent, as they’re in their 8th or 9th year of service, but only if in the top 25% of payments at the club

Just on that rookie draft, we got Short, Castagna, Lambert and Soldo, not a bad haul from one rookie draft.

Nah keep Shorty at any cost.
You don't overpay for outside rebounding defenders. If he gets a godfather offer, we probably have to let him walk.
Realistically, once a player has accepted an alternative offer, they've basically accepted leaving. Not sure you fight tooth and nail for players who want max dollar over staying loyal.

Don’t disagree re short but your last point doesn’t really stand up when you consider that’s exactly what we did with Dusty

Dusty stayed for less, we didn't have to match what he could have got elsewhere. And he's also the matchwinning finals GOAT.

Very different circumstances.

Short is a very very important player. At his best he is probably the best rebounding defender in the AFL - or close to it. His ability to rip a team's defence apart through long accurate kicks is supreme. And he is a very good defender now as well. That sort of player turns a team from contending to winning premierships. ... well along with other players as well. But Short is of very high value.
