17 Teams and the fixture

Simplest way

17 Rounds ...everyone has a bye and plays every other team

another 6 rounds ...6 teams have a bye and there are 8 games
one round ....11 teams have a bye and there are 3 games

22 games and 2 byes over 24 weeks ...if you skip the midseason split round then it only extends the season by a week

You could also have 5 weeks of three teams having a bye and 7 games and two weeks of 8 games and one team having a bye ( or a similar combination) as an alternative to the second paragraph

Every team must have the same amount of byes otherwise its just ridiculous. Obviously the draw has to have a major shake up but I think it needs to be structured rather than just spat out by a computer. The only fair way would be to play each team twice, once at home and once away but obviously this isn't possible.

2012- Each team plays each other once so thats 17 rounds, then whether its a 22/23/24 round season it should be based on ladder position from the previous season. Fo example Geelong finish 1st so perhaps they could play 18th, 14th, 10th, 6th, 2nd. I believe there has to be a formula so everyone is aware what happens and can accept it. This would take out the guess work of the draft. If that makes sense.

I don't know why this is proving to be as difficult as rocket science for some people.

There are 17 teams, so that means 34 byes split over 24 rounds, with all 17 teams having two byes each.

That means either:

A.)... 23 rounds with 8 games (one team having a bye in these rounds)
.... 1 round with 3 games (11 teams having bye in this round)

OR, my preference

B.) 19 rounds with 8 games (one team having a bye in these rounds)
5 rounds with 6 games (3 teams having a bye in these rounds)

Under plan B, the five rounds consisting of 6 matches would be played mid-season giving as many "byes" as possible during that mid-season time.

How old are you kids post 1994 I take it?

We have had an odd number of teams before in 1994

http://stats.rleague.com/afl/seas/1994.html

In 1994: 24 rounds 22 games 1 team having a bye in 23 rds and 7 teams having a bye in rd 6. Which is 30 byes for 15 teams being 2 byes each.

In 2011: 24 rounds 22 games 1 team having a bye in 23 rds and 11 teams having a bye in rd x. Which is 34 byes for 17 teams being 2 byes each

The only issue facing the fixture next season is who play whom twice.

Obviously the following sides will face off on two occasions.

1. Collingwood, Carlton and Essendon
2. Brisbane and Gold Coast
3. Port and the Cows
4. Weagles and the Dockers

Everything else is simply negotiable.

I've got Round 13 being the round with only 3 games in mine.

They could go the other way, spreading out the extra byes over 5 weeks, but I think the AFL will want to get them over and done with as soon as possible. Remember, still only eight games a week next year.
