Player Watch #19: Griffin 'Gus the Goose-stepper’ Logue

That's a brutal one in hindsight. If it makes you feel better you were dead on with Cox, I rate him probably as the best CHB in the comp. Just shows how much nailing the draft can really set you up for success. From the 2016 draft we grabbed great core;
  1. Logue
  2. Darcy
  3. Cox
  4. Ryan
Anyway getting off track. Best of luck for the season :)
wow what a brilliant draft haul. 4 Quality players

Held a handy lead until late when he picked up that groin issue, but no shame losing out to the League's MVP or Cox/Pearce who are both guns in their own right.

I've got no ill-will for him, wanted to be the man down back and makes a better paycheck than we could offer. Similar to Neale a few years back and he's done alright for himself. That said we've probably done the best we could of with the situation, perks of alot of young talent fighting for spots - something I'm sure you'll go through soon also when you're back on the rise
I now want Freo to win the flag this year. Welcome around here anytime Sean.

Fair bit of unnecessary/unfair dissing of McKay going on before R1, in my view. It’s true, he hasn’t set the world on fire in the pre-season.

To be fair it’s mostly one poster who seems to have backed himself into a corner over the notion that free agents in a position of scarcity can get offered a lot of money, and is now doubling down for the sake of being contrarian.

Griffin Logue now North Melbourne’s number one defender ahead of West Coast game

Craig O'Donoghue
The West Australian

North Melbourne co-captain Luke McDonald has declared his club’s decision to recruit Griffin Logue from Fremantle is already paying huge dividends with the former swingman preparing to start the season as the Kangaroos number one key defender against West Coast.

Logue joined the Kangaroos after a frustrating season at Fremantle where he played at both ends of the field and was squeezed out of the team multiple times.

North Melbourne offered Logue a five-year deal to move interstate and, with Ben McKay sidelined for the start of the season with a bone stress injury in his right foot, Logue is set to start life in the blue and white playing on the opposition’s best tall forwards.

That will see him either facing off against Oscar Allen or Jack Darling in Saturday’s game against the Eagles at Marvel Stadium.

“He’s going to be really, really important in that space. You would think Grif would get the first crack,” McDonald told The West Australian.

“Obviously Benny’s gone down. It shows how important it has been to get Grif across. He’s going to need to step up even more with Benny out.

“That’s the thing with footy clubs and good sides, you rely on your squad. There’s always going to be players missing and people have to step up. It’s a great opportunity for Grif to step up.”

Logue played as a forward and back up ruckman against West Coast in round 22 last year and was dropped for the round three derby. He performed a solid job on Darling when Fremantle beat West Coast in 2021.

But McDonald said Logue’s efforts had been so good, that he was shocked to learn he wasn’t more experienced.

Logue played 64 games for Fremantle after being selected as the eighth pick in the 2016 national draft.

“Playing alongside him in the backline, he’s going to be so good,” McDonald said.

“He’s already slotting in as a really good teammate and really dependable. I was speaking to him the other day and I thought he was a similar age to me, so to hear he’s only 24 means he’s got so much footy ahead of him. I cannot wait to play alongside him.”

Goldy was 100 players ago!!

Wow.

Let that sink in...

(And Syd Barker 1000 games ago.)

BTW Marstermind thanks. I love it when you do this and every now and then something like this shows up that is just a great bit of club trivia.

Huge get for us. Shame bmac is out but looking forward to seeing what Logie and corr with another pre season can bring. The vibe of the list is just so much better…

Tried putting together a Best 23 from the 100 players since Goldy's debut. It was depressing and I gave up. A combined team of 15 years of recruits at their best wouldn't be much more than a handy bottom half team nowadays. The goal-to goal line looked good (Tarrant, McKay, Waite, Brown) and the starting 4 was alright (Goldy, Higgins, Cunnington, Simpkin?), then fill in LDU, Ziebell, Dal Santo, LMc, but it turned into the land of the potatoes pretty quickly after that.

Bastinac, Dumont, Gibson and Turner would all have to be in that team, vanilla as the day is long.

Exactly. The moment I realised that Sam Gibson and Kayne Turner would have to be in it was the moment I gave up.

Ben Jacobs for his good season and a half. Majak Daw probably sneaks in for 2018. Aaron Black for kicking 33 goals one year. A lot of careers cut short in that time from injury and misfortune.

As I was typing the comment I was thinking something similar about how shitfully we've drafted and recruited since. Altho W80, Higgo and NDS were excellent recruits, at the right time in our player cycle.

I had a go anyway and it isn't great reading. I based this off impact while they were/are at the club not potential or overall careers (since many played at other clubs).

Though they're all from the 2006 draft Adams and Thomas were both taken after Goldstein and debuted before him so they're included.

Interestingly LDU, Levi Greenwood, Anderson and Jacobs were all on similar amounts of games and all had very slow starts to their North careers. I've probably been afraid to shoot Bambi but part of me wants to swap LDU with Greenwood since they both only really had one good season and Levi's 2014 was better overall than LDU's 2021.

No. 1, or only KPD?
