AFL Player #19: Kayle Gerreyn - Welcome to Essendon!

Doesn't really look like a ruck to my untrained eye, but those mitts are sticky and he can move and use the ball well which is a good sign for a decent key fwd. Good size already too, very happy to see we seem to be steering away from the stick figures we've had a tendency to draft for the last however long.
You've got to be kidding. Some of them hit outs are superb.

Undoubtedly, but in the AFL system he'll be undersized and doesn't look to have a huge leap on him so I don't see it translating personally
Yeh thats where im at with him

He played 90% of his year as a ruck

But Briggs is only 2cm taller and doesnt have a leap, far less power/speed. I do worry another 10kg may disipate that though

Gerryn is atleast an intriguing prospect, hes very hard to rate imo, because not much like him

Seems we have picked him as more a KPF. Did kick 2 goals as a fwd against a solid WAFL league side this year

Hes competitive though

Is hard to see where he fits at AFL, i think hes a ruck, but he may just be atleast 3 cm too short if his growing is done, which it seems to. He really filled out the last 12 months

It wouldnt surprise me if they even have the thought of big big inside mid as an extreme outside chance if other areas dont work or wont fit at AFL

It’s for this reason that I feel underwhelmed by his career. Had all the attributes to be a dominant force but never really got there. Knee injury was a setback but he teased as a top level ruck/forward.
I always compared Hille to Josh Fraser.
Pies got Fraser pick 1 we got Hille with our first pick in the 40s due to salary cap punishments.

Fraser started fast but pestered out at the end of his career.
hille just got better and better.
He was never fast but was just a solid dependable player. Liked his big hits and going for marks too, wasn’t afraid to throw himself into contests and had a bit of bulk behind him. So players could choose to get out of the way for self preservation.
Probably end up suspended like Wright these days.

You are Dodoro !

I don’t know anything about him other than highlights packages, but love what i have seen. If we get this guy to fill out and he’s an aggressive and competitive beast, look out.
I agree - at first glance I couldn’t figure out why a guy with that athletic and skill profile slipped to the 30’s. Thought maybe you had something re attitude that explained it.

I don't think it would be that, attitude seems not to be something the current regime are willing to compromise on

To be clear, I never said Hille’s career was a let down. It was more underwhelming in regards to the skill set he had offered and the return we could’ve had from him. He just never took it to the next level and rarely, if ever, took a game apart. He was, however, a very capable player.

A good ordinary player.

Like a lot of young blokes he has had issues bridging the gap between his best and worst. He has a skill set and ability that is really top end but he has not been able to produce it to a level where he plays well most weeks. He has been drafted as a forward / ruck . His ruck work has also been patchy week in and week out too but he has some forward craft. Has kicked goal playing forward and is a strong mark. If they come off these are the guys that solve the issues with the forward line and having to play a ruck with suspect forward craft forward .

He can certainly get some distance with the ball by hand and foot. Not going to declare he is the second coming but very interested to see how he competes at VFL level next year.

my biggest gripe of this selection

Is he a ruck who can play fwd or is he a fwd who can ruck? stats suggest he is a ruck who is being asked to play fwd
Forget the stats. He will be a forward / ruck if he makes it.

So now we have Draper, Wright, Visentini and Gerrwyn vying for the forward/ruck role?
To be fair Visentini and Gerreyn will be playing VFL in 2025. Draper and Wright will be vying for the ruck / forward spot.

Scott & Co. obviously dont like the Draper + Bryan / Goldstein combo. Orrr, bracing for one of the two to move on at end of season

Wonder if Goldstein is retired early to make way for a spot (mid season or even a SSP selection)

So big enough to be ruckman, but actually having forward craft. If everyone stays healthy, surely club is looking to trade one of Bryan or Draper in a few years. Caddy, Kako and Gerreyn cover a lot of forward needs between them, while Gerreyn can add ruckman minutes to the side as well. Good get. I wonder if this means we are going to let Draper go. I get the feeling that Gerreyn won't take as long as most ruckmen to come on due to his thickness and mobility.

Might be the Josh Kennedy part of the Harley Reid (Judd) trade.

If anything I think it would be first rounder + Draper comp if we're going to do that ... I'm also guessing we'll need more sweetner to it. Either way, I can see us having Wright, Draper, Bryan and Gerreyn all on our list in 2027.
