And how's that working for us?
It's because we have other forwards not defending that we absolutely cannot afford more.

And FWIW I wouldn't give Chappy another game and would not be playing Cooney as a forward for the same reason.

My point was in response to you stating Edwards wouldn't last if he cannot defend as a forward. Clearly he can last as evidenced by those I mentioned who also lack in this area. I don't necessarily agree with it but this is the current status of the team and coaching.

I think Edwards has been held back since joining the club to work on his deficiencies and earn his spot. He spent many games in VFL playing as a defender which doesn't suit him but they did this for a reason. Since he's gone to wing/forward his VFL form improved and he finally got a game.

i'd like to see this guy stay in the team, i think he Adds that bit more to the team that we need

I think long term we may eventually reap the benefits of making him work so hard on his game before giving him an opportunity at senior level. It seems like a good way to get a more balanced player rather than one that can only attack.

Some good signs and I'd definitely like him to stay in. Not sure about pecking order with guys like Jerrett/Edwards/Fantasia. It will be interesting to see in the coming weeks. Gleeson might also be in that pack as well (although slightly ahead).

Edwards has some real nice physical attributes being that bit taller than most players with his pace. We could really do with a good mid-sized forward that can do some dynamic things to change a game. So hopefully he fills that role for us.

There was a passage of play in the middle of the ground where the commentators hammered Heppell for not chasing and forcing Edwards to do so. They got it totally wrong. It was Edwards time to chase and he only started to chase when he realised no one else would. We can't have any more players who choose when to go.

Was at the game yesterday and watched Edwards pretty closely. Got hurt badly defensively, Suckling went to him for a while and completely Blew him up with his work rate and went the length of the ground a couple of times getting touches and then the ball turned over Edwards just couldn't go offensively after chasing..

Needs to improve tank (which will happen after a couple of good pre seasons)

Needs to be continued to play IMO

Now we find out how much balls we have as a club. Do we have a loss and cut all the kids again for the vets who are proven not to cut it but keep us closer to a win? Or stick with these kids for a solid month to see what they have.

B please.

Hawthorn was always going to be a huge test for Edwards because of the way in which their zone strangles the movement of the ball of a team like Essendon lacking pace and kicking precision.

There was no space for Edwards to do his thing and at this stage he is the sort of player that needs that space. The early subbing does not bode well for selection next week but I hope that he is given a few more weeks to show what he can do even if it is just an appearance as a sub to have a run on the G late in a game as it opens up.

That one moment on the wing when he got the ball , was hemmed in then goose stepped out and got clear..... I know that's the only moment he had but it's class. Against lesser sides he gets more of those moments to gain confidence.

If the hird philosophy is for players to have sustained vfl form to get an afl game, it should continue with a sustained run in the afl to make it translate.

If the season is cooked we need to see what these guys have.

Edwards is a fifth year player - Doubt he can improve his tank much more.

I'g give him Edwards two more weeks - Will get a chance to show his skills this week against StKilda who play a pressing style - Then the next week we play Melbourne who play a counter-attacking style - You need to play well against different styles.

I'd say leave him in the side.

I've said it in other posts, but we (Essendon) are the absolute worst in the league when it comes to how we handle young players trying to establish themselves in the seniors.

We tend to only bring them in to the side when the seniors are weakened by injury, and then we dump them like it was their fault when they inevitably have a poor game. Give them three or four weeks minimum, and judge their performance as a whole rather than single games in isolation.

id go as far as to say we are also the worst users of the SUB in the league also

Especially a player like Edwards who will have bad games every now and then. Having said that, the coaches need to show footage of some of his defensive efforts. I think that's why he's taken so long to establish himself - his defensive side is very poor.
