2006 AFL Draft (The Super Draft)

From Essendon,

#2- Scott Gumbleton- Has had chronic hamstring problems but should be eased back through bendigo, has a fantastic set of hands and a great motor should be the succesor of Scott Lucas.

#18- Leroy Jetta- Wow, one of my favourites, amazing speed and footskills, has just added defensive pressure to his game and if he learns to find the ball 20-25 times a game he will be a Star.

#20- Tom Hislop- Hasn't had much of a run in the firsts due to injuries and disciplanary problems but he is one of the hardest guys down at essendon with a bit of flair to comlement his workman like gamestyle. Most Essendon fans see him as a natural succesor to Jason Johnson.

#36- Alwyn Davey- He is invaluable, enough said.

#42- Bachar Houli- Is the favourite for this years rising star, and for good reson. Fantastic engine (Best at Essendon), a prolific ball magnet with great skills to boot. Has to work a little bit on his accountability but it will come. Will be a top shelf player.

#48- Kyle Reimers- Really hard at it with a lot of flair, his decision making is sometimes a little shaky but he is a real keeper. He is currently in the team this week.

12 - James Frawley - athletic defender who was given opportunities last year and showed a bit of promise. Has not been cited this year. I think he'll become a good player but it remains to be seen whether he was worth taking with such a high pick.

30 - Ricky Petterd - absolutely brilliant in his debut season before seriously injuring himself. Unfortunately hasn't been able to recover as of yet as he faces another 4-6 on the sidelines.

46 - Colin Garland - one of Dean Bailey's favourites, he is still young but the early prognosis is that he isn't going to make it in the big time.

62 - Isaac Weetra - played rounds 1 and 2 this year, looked all at sea and has since been dropped from both the Melbourne and Sandringham senior sides. Will be struggling to keep his spot on the list next year me thinks.

:(

If all 6 of our draftees were fit, 5 of them would be in the team this weekend. I think thats a pretty good effort for 2nd year players. The only concern is for Gumby to get his body right. If that happens it will be all smiles.

Along side Collingwood, the best side of the draft... Port Adelaide

5. Travis Boak: 18 Games, arguably the most skilfull midfielder in the draft (Selwood is tougher)
23. Paul Stewart: Played 4 games this year, looks solid, puts his head over the ball
39. Nathan Krakouer: 11 games, freak player, can kicks 4-5 goals a week in the SANFL playing on ball
55. Robert Gray: Garry Ablettesque, watch him on youtube, 5 games, this is gonna be the real bolter once given a regular game, bit hard with Motlop, Ebert Pearce etc kicking goals
71: Justin Westhoff: 20 games, obvious bargain
85: David Rodan: 29 games, 32 goals for us, bargain pick of the draft, thanks Richmond!

PSD
4. Adam Cockshell: 2 games, who knows, tall forward, played ok in the PS this year.

Rookies
5. Alex Lee (delisted)
21 Gavin Grose (promoted to seniors this year)
36 Nathan Batsanis (WTF was he delisted for, he's excellent...)
49. Peter Hardy (delisted)

Trust me, nearly every club cleaned up in this draft. Awesome draft.

Fremantle's drafting this year is worth a laugh though.

It was absolutely terrible. When you trade away all your early picks that's what happens though. I hate loving Fremantle sometimes.

At the time everyone was saying Collard at #31 was a steal. 12 months later, delisted, playing for Richmond. Woo-fricken-hoo!

Brock O'Brien looks like he'll be a handy player (assuming he ever gets selected). Whilst Mourish was more of a speculative pick, he could be great he could be nothing.

Gumbleton: Twang, another hammy gone
Hislop: ok
Jetta: Krakouer is better
Davey: Pearce is better
Reimers: meh

I'll give you some credit.

Port and Collingwood > Essendon >>>> the rest

North would say they have done very well too, I'm not sure you can argue with Campbell (Rookie) Edwards (86) Thomas (53) and Hansen (Chad Cornes) , Urquhart (Lindsay Judd) & Goldstein to come.

Urquhart is the one. He is a magnificent footballer. Has to play soon.

Yep very happy with that lot.

RICHMOND

# 13 Jack Riewoldt: 192cm developing key position play. However he will probably develop into more of a tall half foward flanker. We traded pick 7 for Riewoldt at 13 and Polak. We did well here as we were going to take Riewoldt anyway. Has played 9 games of AFL, with 7 goals. Is at a stage now where he simply dominates VFL (kicked 11 goals in first 2 rounds) and is ready to step up. Has lost weight in an attempt to gain speed. In the current side
Strengths: Goal kicking, overhead mark, great footy brain, good tank
Weaknesses: Slow lead, size (192cm, 86kg, but has a natural slouch which means he looks an inch shorter)

# 26 Shane Edwards: Our version of Dale Thomas. Has already played 17 games for 12 goals and is a real live wire. Knows where the footy is just needs to clean up his finishing. Another AFL fringe player who has a soft spot in all Tiger hearts. Just needs to increase his finishing skills and size. In the current side
Strengths: Excitment machine, roving, speed, balance
Weaknesses: Size, consistancy, ability to find the pill more

# 58 Daniel Conners: This guy can be anything. Has been likened to Micheal Voss, a pure midfielder. While he doesn't have the best pace he too is an excitment machine who is filled out. Took VFL mark of the year last year and average about a goal a game as a midfielder/back flanker. Dropped to 58 because he supposibly had attitude problems, however that seems to be fixed. With an ankle injury of the summer he had no real pre-season. The fact that he is still building his fitness is probably the only thing keeping him out of the AFL. Will play games later in the year
Stengths: Poise, inside/outside ability, mark, leap, skills
Weakness: Fitness, pace

# 60 Carl Peterson: Delisted. Whimsy small foward with an excellent leap. Couldn't adjust to the Melbourne live style. His hand went through a window after a big night out and although details are sketchy, he raptured a tendon in his arm which would have rule him out for half of this season. Was potentially going to be rookied by the club but it never ended up happening

# 73 Andrew Collins: Nothing more then a speculative pick. Missed the most of last year with O/P but has started well this year playing games at Coburg Seniors. An inside midfielder who has a cult following at Richmond. Probably won't play AFL in 08', but is everychance to make his debut next year.
Stengths: Pace, inside mid, skills
Weakness: Size, marking, consistancy

Rookie
Tasman Clingan: Delisted. Spent half the time injured, the other half in Coburg ressies. The club decided not to continue with him

Trade:
Graham Polak: A bit of an indifferent start to the season with a fairly poor first 3 round however his excellent marking was shown as a real asset up foward last week when he was one of the best Tigers on the field

All in all, it was a pretty good year for the Richmond recruiters which has coincided with our very good 07' draft picking up Cotchin, Rance, Putt, Gourdis and getting Morton and McMohan in the draft. All this after our poor decision to pick up Jarred Oakley Nicholls who is really struggerling

Not from what I heard. The people who went to the Bullants/Coburg match a couple of weeks ago mentioned how poor his body language was as he seemed more interested to pushing and shoving Bullants players then going after the ball.

good post RG nice to read some facts on BF for a change

Scotland, I'd say Houlihan is in the mix - he's progressed very nicely this season and is showing some very good form at WAFL level. Injury witholding, should play AFL games this season if he maintains his form.

The Houlihans are the "mark of Cain" in the AFL - no team, from memory has had any even moderate success while having a Houlihan on their list. It could well be that there is no coincidence between the WC's slide and their listing of a Houlihan.

Crows:
#14 - James Sellar - A big key forward prospect. Could make it, could flop. He's still VERY young but Tippett has shown much more at this stage. Could be an age thing, Sellar just turned 18 recently, Tippett is 20.

#32 - Kurt Tippett - Looking very good so far. A pretty good ruckman, not amazing around the ground but his strength lies in becoming a potentially A grade key forward. At almost 200cm and athletic like Franklin this guy could be awesome. For a reminder of his potential watch the NAB grand final.

#48 - David Mackay - Another excellent pick. Young skinny midfielder, has played every game so far this year, after being injured most of last year. Doesn't amass huge amounts of possessions but his disposal is seriously top notch for one so young. Looks often times like a veteran out there. Huge hopes for this kid.

#64 - Nick Gill - Could be a reasonably successful CHF for the Crows for a few years, but he's always injured. Jury is still out. If he gets on the park he's shown glimpses, but he kicks like Ian Perrie.... One of those players you either love or hate, often in the same match.

#78 - Bryce Campbell - Mature recruit from the SANFL. Looking like he'll only be a depth midfielder, and may not be around too long for the Crows.

Rookies:
#14 - Andrew McIntyre - Gone
#29 - James Turner - Gone
#43 - Rhys Archard - Gone
#54 - Greg Gallman - Still around, looks like he could be an OK defender. Recent injuries have hampered his development.

Overall not bad, but the jury is still out in a lot of ways. If Sellar becomes what he could and Tippett plays like he did in the NAB GF every game. If Mackay keeps improving and Gill gets on the park...

Lots of IFs but overall quite happy to cross my fingers and wait for the future :)

Hansen hasn't done much to be honest. Looked really good in our NAB cup match. Starting to hit some form in the VFL. Will hopefully play most remaining games.

Gavin Urquhart pick 21. This is the guy i'm most excited about. Hopefully debuts soon, was emergency last round.

Todd Goldstein pick 37. Apparently rucking very well and would be our best "tap ruckman" but needs to work on his game around the ground.

Lindsay Thomas doing really well at pick 53.

Aaron Edwards pick 82 :thumbsu:Came from another club didn't he? Eagles?

Don't hold your breath on the Roos young guns, they never give them a fair crack. Worst team at developing young players.

How do i prove my point? - - Leigh Brown gets selected regularly.

WTF

Selwood and Luenberger are the clear standouts of that draft to date, how the hell did Gibbs managed to get to the top of that order?!?

Chill the ____ out. They are in order of being drafted not in order of who he thinks has been the best.

PWNED!

Try reading the post dawg, and don't edit the original post to suit your argument

Hey everyone,

This is my first post so I couldn't start a thread but I just have a question regarding the Pre-Season draft.

Ok, so I know that a player sets their own price and if a club agrees to it they pick them up, but if a club picks them do they have to go to them?
For example, say a player sets a price of 80,000 per year for 3 years. Club 1 wants to pick him up but he really wants to go to Club 2, can the player reject Club 1's offer and go to number 2?

Like do all the clubs know what contract all the players in the Pre-Season draft want or is it just the clubs who approach the player beforehand?

Does this make any sense?

Thanks

Nope, if you're drafted, you're drafted. Players have a little more power in terms of the pre-season by nominating their price, but if a club meets the financial demands they're good to go. Hence Nick Stevens winding up at Carlton, and Jade Rawlings going to Footscray

Smart bloke you are there Mullo. We all wait with baited breathe... Brown, Watt, Harding, Power to be gone by the end of the year... I wait with baited breathe...

They have the most 'potential' (dirty word) of any group we have ever drafted before. We normally just draft hardworkers who can't kick. Sheesh we do quite well with our rookies and late picks though... Nifty Nev's finest. Hope this is the one though!

Gumbleton: Twang, another hammy gone
Hislop: ok
Jetta: Krakouer is better
Davey: Pearce is better
Reimers: meh

I'll give you some credit.

Port and Collingwood > Essendon >>>> the rest

Lol. Gumbles back next week. You guys would do anything to get him, coz tredrea keeps getting worse. Yeah right off a 19 year old coz his done his hammy a few times. Riewoldt ring any bells?
Hislop, unlucky to have so injuries so early but highly talented. Averaged 25 possies and 10 tackles a game in under 18s. Will feature in second half of the year.
Jetta is much better than krakouer, for one at least he is able to put on weight. Krakouer makes Dempsey look like a tank. Jetta 7 tackles against Carlton in the first half.
Davey. Pick 35 is a steal. Best defensive foward in the AFL. Top 3 most important players at the club.
And LOL at Reimers being simply a meh player. Very bottom aged, and according to Nathan Buckley was the reason we came back last night. 18 possessions. Skill, pace, and very hard at it.:thumbsu:
