2009 Draft Camp/State Screening invitees

Been told 13 WA boys have draft camp invites.
Can confirm Colyer, Wheerdon, Fyfe, Winmar and Donaldson have all been invited.
Of the other 8, I would assume the other 4 All Aus players in the right age group would be definites to be going, that is Sheppard, Morabito, Lucas and Duncan.
My other picks for the spots I'm unsure of are Hutchings, Jetta and Luff. If anyone disagrees I would be interested to hear, can't think of anyone else who would warrant a spot ahead of those three.

One missing. The big surprise has been confirmed. Anthony Del Borrello from West Perth who injured his shoulder before the carnival has been given a draft camp invite. Very, very surprising.

If this is true I am a little surprised about the numbers, I would've thought numbers might be up above 15 kids. However, it must be remembered 4 of the 9 best performing WA boys were bottom aged, which would've taken the numbers up to at least 17.

If anyone hears anything contrary to what I've said above, let me know.

Del borrello will be very interesting to see what happens, a lot could come down to how he tests. His stats before the shoulder:
R1 - 17d, 7m, 2.1
R2 - 13d, 5m, 4.1
R3 - 14d, 8m, 5.1
R5 - 11d, 4m, 1.1
R6 - 20d, 5m, 0.3

Watch for Donaldson to impress in testing, quick with a good leap.

Pretty sure that Eastern have:

DC: Gysberts, Moore, Scott, Kennedy & Griffiths
SS: McDonald, Cass, Mirra, Dyson & Burnage

Groenewegen, Crichton, Harwood and Davies all got Draft Camp invites from Tassie.

Milne, Archer and Claridge state screening.

Chris Luff and Mitch Brown both invited to the state screenings.

I am very surprised Mason from Peel didnt get an invite.

Don't know much about many Interstate players which made me head to the stats from the National Carnival. What position does he play because he didn't have a big disposal average however he was the only player with 100% efficiency by foot with a very high 86.7% overall disposal efficiency.
So is he just skillful - what about footy brain, character and work rate. Appreciate a comment from someone who has seen him play a number of times. May give insight to maybe why he didn't receive an invite.
Be disappointing - big chance when in the premiership team - especially such a dominant one.

Word on the grape vine is that the Jets only have only one DC invite and 4 SS. I have been told names but don't want to repeat at this stage as not entirely sure of my source or whether all players know yet. If my source turns out to be correct there would be some very dispapointed boys down there for not making DC or missing out all together. From my perspective it doesn't come as any surprise as the Jets have had an ordinary year and haven't seen a recruiter since about round 4! To those who missed out it says more about the system than their ability to play the game. If my source is correct 4 of the Jets 5 or 6 best players this year (and more consistent players in the TAC too) have missed out - which stinks!

They might have one more SS than that.

That's a slight overexaggeration. The Jets haven't had a great year, and yes I think historically they have been glossed over more than other TAC clubs but I'm sure they've still had their fair share of visits from recruiting people.

And while the system might stink, it's up the clubs to be pro-active as well. Perhaps they should review their program and ask how they can make sure that they get themselves into a competitive position in the H&A season, how they can encourage people to want to go to their games, and how they can make sure they play finals and give their players one, two or three more chances to play TAC Cup footy in fine conditions during September. Same goes for Sandringham and Bendigo. I can sympathise with you about these clubs perhaps being glossed over (or not picked through as much as others), but I guess one reason the recruiters drop off is that the decision makers have limited time - if they have a chance to see Geelong v Dandenong with 12-15 potential draftees playin or Western v Sandringham with 6, then most of them are going to choose the game which will best utilise their time.

I don't want to know whose got invites, but I'd like to know you'd have going to DC and SS if you had the choice.

there is one more ss and i can tell you that there where some kids over the moon at the chance at going to state screening

And so they should be too, it's an indication of where they might be at and gives them something to work towards over the next eight weeks with their fitness levels.

For every happy player though there are probably two disappointed ones. And you hope those guys go away, finish the season strongly, have a bit of extra determination to prove some people wrong and realise that its still possible to get a late call up if form warrants it.

definitely and i can say the kids who are shattered not to be going to draft camp and only state screening should take a hard look them selves and think about there team "mates"

Similar story down at the Cannons. The most consistent best players did not get invites to either. Makes you wonder whether busting your gut every week getting 30 possies a game is worth it or should you take the easy street and play only 2 - 3 good games a year. Reading between the lines as I have followed the Jets I think I know who you are talking about at the Jets.

Like you I am not naming playing but I believe 10 Cannons have invites - no real surprises and all very worthy. I wish them all the best. Not sure who got what but I assume 8 DC and 2 SS but I may be wrong.

1 shock ommission and 2 disappointing ommissions. For these boys (and the Jets boys who were over looked) it is not over - go out there, keep busting your guts, getting 25+ possies a game and prove the recruiters wrong.

Work Rate could lift a tad, but has a very good footy brain and is very level headed. His disposal has improved remarkably as the season has wore on.

Sorry CHB if I wasn't clear.....it was my assumption that there would be disappointed boys not making DC. Through the TAC footy years, with players getting on scholarships, making rep teams etc I presume that it is hard for them not to have an expectation that the next natural step is to make draft camp. Perhaps the players themselves are better placed to evaluate their performances and more accepting of their current standing.

As an observer, the Jets group seem pretty tight and there doesn't seem to be any egos, so I would think that the players would be rallying around each other at the moment.

I can confirm the Perth Demons have 0 going to Draft Camp and 4 or 5 going to the State screenings.

This team would have to be one, if not the strongest Colts team in WA so no kids in the DC is a surprise.

Most of the kids are under 180cm though. Still amazes me that clubs don't look at smaller players considering players like Kerr, Mitchell and Cousins are all stars.

Players like Elari don't get a look in, he was unlucky a State level due to the talent of the WA squad.

nah i didn't mean anything against you i fully understand what you mean i bet there would be, but the boys who received state screening where apparently over the moon baring one surprise exclusion

In no particualry order:
Lawson, Notman, Rayner, Sherlock & Tighe for great seasons in the midfield in very trying circumstances. Couldn't split these guys.

Hartigan & Fitzpatrick - Not the greatest of seasons but have previously been identified as being draftable.

That's a slight over exaggeration. The Jets haven't had a great year, and yes I think historically they have been glossed over more than other TAC clubs but I'm sure they've still had their fair share of visits from recruiting people.

Perhaps slightly exaggerated to make a point but realistically still close to the mark.

There were plenty of recruiters in attendance at the first 3 rounds. First 2 games at Burbank against interstate teams drew some interest and at that stage the Jets were expected to have a good year - building on 2008 with some good first yearers coming in. Local derby Jets v Cannons also well attended.

Round 4 bye for most. VM/VC selection games underway.

Round 5&6 Jets played in Bunningyong against the Rebels' 25 man team and then Lavington v the Bushies. Not too many recruiters made those trips.

Round 7 - Gippsland at Burbank. Interest diminishing with Jets only winning 1 of first 6 matches (drawing with Bushies). That's the Jets fault.

Round 8 - at Sandy. Well attended by recruiters on that side of town. Bad game by Jets underlined probably in recruiters' minds not to bother going to Jets games.

Round 9-11 Good wins against the Cannons & Oakleigh but no-one there to see on the back of previous performances.

Round 12 - some interest restored with some recruiters at Northern. Unfortunately Jets had a shocker. Again, that's their fault.

Round 13 - Bye

Round 14&15 away games in Gippsland & Carrara.

Round 16 & 17 - Good wins by Jets against Sandy & Bendigo but sides at bottom of ladder and Bendigo away.

I know allot when reading this will say it was the Jets own fault in losing games that mattered but you can be stiff when you do play well that there may not be recruiters in attendance or you are playing up the bush.
