We can take any team.

Bring this season on, I will gladly put our best 22 against any.

We have beaten two of the current top four. Our best is as good as any, and we are going to get better.

We have the best collection of young players in the league, our ruck division is the best going around, and our playing style goes for assault.

Bring it on.

Re: Waiting on 2010 because.....

Ryder and Hille as rucks might force Laycock to go harder. (Sorry about that)
I want to see Zak turn a corner. I reckon he'll be our next Lovett.
I want to see Neagle and Gumby playing like Brown and Bradshaw circa 2004.
Watson hits more targets by foot.
Houli regularly makes the run on side, goes harder, racks up many many possessions and becomes a gun.
Dyson proves he's not a one-season-wonder.
Williams Davey and Monfries step up.

Pears and Hurley to control the backline even possibly keep the old man Fletcher out of the team. Haha imagine that talk about depth

Membership tally 2010

Predictions for number of memberships for Essendon in 2010?
2008: 41,947
2009: 40,523
2010: ???
Considering we made the finals this year, and have played the same exciting brand of football we played last year, but managed to balance it more this year [aka we now have a defence:thumbsu:] I think that we should increase our membership tally next year.

Also taking into consideration the fact that all of those that have wet dreams over Sheedy, that 'would not be renewing their membership' may just jump back on the bandwagon as our team is an exciting prospect for the next few years.

I was going to include comparisons to other clubs in this, but unfortunately, I couldn't find any uncompromised membership tallies. In which I mean no tallies that are not completely irrelevant. Take the Hawks for example: should NOT include pet memberships, 3 game members from Tassie, and opposition supporters from Tassie who couldn't get to the game unless they became Hawthorn members. [Hawthorn fans; please don't take offence to that, it was purely an example]

The 'Global Financial Crisis' may work against membership numbers, but hopefully by the time renewal comes along [early December??? correct me if I am wrong], current members and potential members will have some money to throw at the club.

The most important fact that will increase membership numbers is that Michael Hurley is in our team which should get another 2000 members at least.:thumbsu:

So I predict a rise in membership for 2010, especially if we have a good start to the season, as more 'supporters' may just jump on with our success.

So my prediction: 42,043

Your thoughts/predictions for 2010?

Re: Membership tally 2010

After making the finals for the first time in 5 years in 2009 and with the exciting brand of football we play, I could see our membership being up around the 45k mark. A top 6 finish and a win in the finals could see 2011 numbers closer to 50k.

Re: Membership tally 2010

That is how you deliver it to Neagle please watch that mids and deliver like that more often. oh and about 49,999

Re: Membership tally 2010

are u serious?
we had more in '08?
'09 definatly promised more.
dissapointing.

Not really. Most experts didn't see us going any higher up the ladder than the bottom 4 in 2009 (happy to prove them wrong). And our '08 season probably didn't do too much to entice people to sign up.

I'd say 44,240 for 2010. Young team playing exciting football who had some big scalps throughout the year.

Re: Waiting on 2010 because.....

gumbleeeeeeton

notice the ton?

he'll kick a ton

Love it. The back page of the newspaper, the day after Scotty kicks his 100th "Gumble-TON" with a picture of gumbleton and essendon celebrate with 1000's of essendon fans, me being first there. I'd take that;)

Re: Membership tally 2010

It has been the case with most clubs membership tallies that their numbers reflect their previous year. Just look at any premiership side. Geelong for example, after their premiership in 2007 they had a massive boost in numbers of members. This is aided of course by 'bandwagoners' but also by the fact that there are so many supporters that do 'follow' their team in times when they are not winning, but don't show their support until their team is becoming successful, in which case they become 'loyal supporters' that had never wavering love for their club.
You see classic examples of this in younger supporters, that support 1 team for half a season, then change over to whichever team is on top for the rest of the season. This makes sense in that you don't want to support a team that rarely wins. [Carlton supporters are of course the exception to this rule - they are different you understand.];)
But anyway, I shall stop being Mr. Psychiatrist, and just say that membership numbers go in cycles, as does success for the team. And so there becomes a harsh paradox in that without success, a team doesn't get members, and without members the team doesn't get success.

Forgive my inane ramblings, I haven't slept in too long.

Your thoughts/predictions for 2010?

My thoughts prior to the final Vs Adelaide that having made the finals for the first time in 5 years our membership tally would have increased on the back of the emergence of the next great team; Lead by Ryder, Pears, Hurley and Gumbleton. I would haver had us down for 43,000 members at that stage.

Since then we have been absolutely smashed in a final Vs Adelaide, lost a match winner in Lovett in less than glorious circumstances, had our captain almost forced into retirement (at least that was the perception if not the fact), seen the club deal with the whole Lloyd saga in a haphazard way (un Essendon like) and had our biggest young star out drunk assaulting (alledgedly) a taxi driver - the point not being so much that he did it, rather how could he have been allowed to be out at 5am and do it!. This last item points to a lack of leadership in the club to me.

Unfortunately the above items are the most recent events of the club and I believe they collectively will have a significant impact on 2010 membership. Unfortunately perception drives peoples mindsets and I think the last month or so has taken much of the gloss of what I think was a very positive season in 2009. Having said that, I still think we have a great team being put together and the events of the last months will have been forgotten and re written in 2-3 years time. Unfortunately it will hurt membership for 2010.

My tip: 40,300 members - stagnant in 2010.

* Jobe Watson equal 4th in Brownlow with Judd and goes back to back b&f
* Neagle to kick 53 goals, and really make an impact
* Kyle Riemers to play 22 games (excluding finals) and to make it to the 40 man AA squad
* Finish 6th
* Win our first game in finals in a close game
* Bachar Houli to play a great season and stay injury free
* Hille to come back with a burst
* Ryder playing in the forward line and making a massive impact
* Zaharakis in top 10 B&F
* Stanton to work on his foot skills and come equal second in the b&f
* Hurley to do some full back work
* Mcveigh to come equal second with Stanton in b&f
* Michael Still to make a cracking debut
* Adam Mcphee to win the Army Award

These are a few of my predictions.

Bandwagon: Still, T. Slattery, Bock

*Watson to get Brownlow and B&F
*Neagle and Williams to dominate and get into AA squad
*Still to kick 7 on debut
*McVeigh for GOTY
*Essendon to finish 5th and win their first final against Hawthorn
*Ryder to get MOTY
*Tayte Pears AA Full-Back
*Hille to dominate in the ruck

Very big call

Unlike (most of) the rest? :p

*Lonergan/Hocking to improve massively or drop off
*Ryder for B&F
*Gumby to win over fans
*Pears to plateu (not a bad thing really after this year)
*Stanton to become a 'heaps better' player as the team gets better
*Skipworth to legally adopt three rookies, two kittens and build a house (and win Bendigo B&F)

* Jobe Watson to win back to back best & fairests
* Neagle to start round 1 on 91kgs or less
* Tayte Pears to make it to the 40 man AA squad
* Win our first final since 2004
* Hurley to come top 3 in the NAB Rising Star Award
* Mark Williams to kick at least 40 goals
* Alwyn Davey to win the Army Award again
