Not yet, but they are confident. I guess as confident as we were, and as Melbourne was.

Substantially more confident. For a start, Todd came and told us as soon as they approached him. I expect he'll sign before Rd1.

The fact he's just had a kid (well, his missus did) is a huge factor IMO.

I don't get how they could have better salary cap planning. By the time GC's young stars really hit their peaks, the Ablett's, Bock's, etc., will be nearing the end, and likely in a front loaded contract. This means GC will have more room to pay their young guys more.

GWS will still be paying Scully, Ward, etc. extraordinary amounts of money, by the time thier stars peak. Does anyone really think that Scully will be happy to take a massive pay cut once his current contract runs out? Hopefully, this means that either Scully, etc., walk out on the club, or they pay Scully more and lose their young stars. GWS especially, will be in a lot of trouble in a few years, unless they get players to agree to significant pay cuts to what they could be making, and we all saw what happened the last time Scully was asked to do that

Cornes, Brogan and Ohalpin won't cost as much as Bock, Campbell Brown, Brennan, Ritchatelli or Kraukour did nor will the GWS oldies be one the list for the next 3 years. In 2 years time this will mean GWS should have more to pay these latest draftees in order to get them to re-sign. In 2013 GC will still have most of those older guys still there taking up cap space.

GWS looks to have recruited old blokes for 1 year deals and gone after younger recruits (Ward 23, Davis 21 and Scully 20).

I suppose we won't know for sure until next year when they take their second bite of the cherry, Pendlebury would cost a bit.;)

But will these young guys be expecting these big contracts next year, or in 3-5 years? Surely GWS can't afford to be paying all these first round draft picks what other teams could pay them when they begin to peak, which you would expect to be at least a couple of years. Scully and Ward are both on long and big contracts. They will be expecting contract renewals right around the time these guys will be beginning to peak. If you were Scully, would you accept a smaller contract from here on in?

She also has her favourites.

She labeled Casey Sibosado a top 10 pick 3 years ago, and a future star indigeneous key forward in the mould of Franklin.

He went in the rookie draft to Freo, and is already on the scrap heap.
Murdoch was her favourite this year = Geelong smashed it.

No she didn't. She put Sibisado as her last pick in her top 25..and was admitting it was a biased judgement.

Her sentimental favourite was Cascitti or whatever his name was

She is a poor judge of a potential draftee. Young Casey was on a scholarship to Xavier & was lucky enough to get drafted in the first place.

I'm not going to out him, but there is a Hawthorn poster who is on the Collingwood recruiting team, just reading some of his insights far outweighs anything Emma puts down.

All the draftees are on set two year deals minumum so no pay rises for them until they renew in 2014, Ward, Scully and Davis yes are getting big bucks but these will be massively front ended deals because every year both GWS and GC list size and cap size is reduced.

When Scully, Ward and co come out of contract no way will they be getting what they are on now because the cap space won't exist at any club to pay it unless they are of a Judd or G Ablett quality, which they certainly are not now.

Remember these two new clubs have massive extra cap space and funding from the AFL to attract talent. In 5 years every AFL team will have the same cap, thats my understanding anyway.

Also GWS and GC will lose some of these guys and trade them out for picks which they will use in the draft therefore freeing up cap space to pay more to those who stay.

GC seem to have recruited mid term higher paid mature players who will cost more, GWS have gone the cheaper short term option with Cornes, Brogan, Power and O'Halpin. Thats my point.:thumbsu:

You missed my point again. When the GC rookies come out of their original contract, they will still be generally untested, and not many will be expecting the big bucks. By the time they are coming out of their second contracts, the likes of Bock, Ablett, etc., will be retiring, meaning GC has money to keep the young guys.

When the GWS rookies come out of their first contract, sure, the Brogan's, etc. will be retiring, but none of them are on big bucks anyway. By the time they come out of their second contracts, they wil be expecting more money, because they will be in their 5th year or so. With Scully, Ward etc. still there, and probably also expecting new contracts around the same time, they will struggle to keep all of these guys more than GC will.

It is likely that both clubs will lose some good players, but i reckon GC will be better primed to keep more of the key players than GWS will be when it matters.

Professional recruiter provides more insight into draftee then journalist. How absurd...

Quayle is clearly being rated alongside her fellow journalists where her reputation is far better then others.

She also admits she has favourites, much like recruiters.
