no more tall forwards.. had enough, take boseley for sure!!! As well as Bolger, need a developing ruck.

Even if Nathan has the desire and the club has the interest, both of which I seriously doubt, do we need him as an insurance forward anyway? I don't think Nathan can play well as a back as some have suggested, and the recruitment of Orren means that Vardy will play most of the year forward, and also means West can become a forward (it's not the preferred option given how well he's played in the ruck, but he has done it a lot of at vfl level so can if needed) if we get injuries to Hawkins or Pods. To me we've got less cover down back, given that Gillies is our only cover for our three tall defenders, and he didn't have a great year this year. IF, we take a mature age rookie, and I'm not saying we have to, I would think we have more need for a tall defender than a tall forward.

Here I sit thinking about the Rookie Draft and its machinations, and all my questions and more are answered. You make our board amazing reading.

Anyway, really rate Michael Bussey as both player and person. Surprised he was overlooked. Eastern gun . Very teachable, mature, classy. Tall, 196 cm, only 82 kg, but plenty of scope as a KPB, though mainly played forward with Eastern

Alex Greenwood, highly rated at Eastern, mid, beautiful left footer, quick and clever. Best and Fairest.

Max Warren. Another Eastern mid that was highly respected by opposition coaches, never shirked a contest, fearless and creative.

Crozier and Patton naturally stole the limelight, but these 3 are worth a look.My bias is that I saw them play a dozen or more times.

I'm very surprised Greenwood didn't get picked up, good player I think.

Bussey has potential but one who I think given his inconsistent year, might miss out.

Warren I don't know much about so I defer to you on that.

Id look no further than Damien Volta from eastern, he has amazing speed and agility, great balance, hes versatile ,can play through the middle or iether end of the ground.would be a great rookie pick up.

Hi Damien :p

Carl Peterson anyone? I was listening on SEN the other day and he and his manager stated that Geelong had spoken to him. A real talent who has had commitment issues in the past. Worth a rookie spot imo

Talent, has some indigenous mateship at Geelong, may like The City By The Bay, and the beaches. Has "failed" at 2 clubs already.

Not completely against it, but given Carl has burned 2 clubs so far with his inability to stick with the professionalism side of things, I'd be making him go through our VFL list and then assess him in 12 months, test how much he really wants it this time.

Isn't a bad pick, although I'd still take Spurr over him every day of the week.

Yeah, fair enough. I know he has burnt 2 clubs but I was thinking Geelong being a country town, he might adjust better than what he would in the big smoke of Melbourne. It really is a shame to see some of these guys from the top end not make it because they can't adjust and commit.

If someone knows of two Geelong region based midfielders who are ball magnets then let me know.
They will be who I reckon we will take.

We are probably pretty right now for taller types after Thursday. I would imagine that Wells will look to use the 2 spots with speculative midfielders. I could see him surprising us again with someone very left field that he has seen in the back blocks of Camperdown or Colac.

Of the ones that I have seen vision of though Darrou hold some interest though I'm not sure we necessarily need his type. Bussey and Boseley likewise now.

I should have read this before posting.

^ What he said

We could def utilise Darrou.
We just lost Ling, and Rooke a few years back.

Could you imagine this kid with Max Rooke coaching him!!!

I don't think we'll limit ourselves to looking locally only. I also think given we have Hogan and Cowan both of whom the club really rate, and Schroder (I know he played a lot forward this year but he has clearance mid written all over him when he builds up his endurance) Simpkin, and they kept Stringer, so I don't necessarily think they'll feel the need to take more mids.

In any case to answer your question Raidme from our VFL team could be worth considering (his last year was better than this year but he was still very good this year), Greenwood I like, and there's a kid called Doug Morris who did very well in the clearance categories in the TAC but who's disposal wasn't dynamic enough to get him picked up.

Buchanan from the Falcons would have been worth a look but he's decided to play T20 cricket.

Nelson and Waldhunter would be the sort of guys you might consider but they might go before our picks.

Our draft was really good long term, but other than Orren, none of them are likely to be able to contribute significantly to our rotation policy next year (Kersten's the only possibility but he's coming off a low endurance base due to injury), so with Menzel Brown and Vardy in the rehab room at the moment I think there's every chance they'll actually pick someone who they think can come in and play a role straight away, unless they are already planning to elevate one of the rookies at round 1. Not that they'll do it at the expense of the long term, but someone that bit older, i.e. this Shenton that was mentioned is likely unless they are already planning to elevate one of the rookies at round 1, as we'll need to rotate and we could use more numbers to do it. I reckon that's likely, just not sure if that means we'll take someone from our VFL team again or look outside.

We're good for rucks now for the short term but another tall defender would probably still be considered if they can find a good one.

If there was an impending train wreck between Jordan Lockyer and Ben Darrou, and only one would walk away, I'd put my money on Darrou!

He's done everything right, would be a pity not to take him considering the loss of Rooke and Ling, we need that light-heavyweight body amongst the middleweight midfielders and flankers.

The word is he's got a bit of mongrel, would be great backup for Bundy and others. Whatsmore he likes to dish off and bring others into the game.
Would be stoked if we gave him a chance.

Just had a look at his promo tape very poor quality but he looked alright, hard to tell but does he have a splash in him.

I am too far away to add much to this, but I would like to put Raidme up for discussion.

Seems to me the guy is in the best few week after week in the VFL...has he got what it takes???

Agreed! I hope he is fully bearded if we take him

As a key backman for Vic Metro, with limited opportunity in a dominant side, young Ben at 17yrs, 190cms, 93kg, averaged 14.5 disposals, 4 marks, 4.5 tackles. He obviously played a disiplined role down back blanketing his opponent.
Could play higher and really cut loose I imagine, one big puppy. :D

Mid fielder these days, give me some size 196cm+

YPO,

Remember the curse of Stewart Dew????

This kid ain't fat like Dewey, and yet he carved us in the 08 Granny, sheer power around the ball, and a big kick. He killed a tired worn out Geelong.

Fact is in the draft we stilladded to our over abundance of smalls, Jed Bews 181cm only and Lincoln McCarthy 177cm, so there's another couple for yer!
Stevenson a ruck, was a must for Ottens, one for one, but we still need at least another 1 or 2 in that 190 range and we've got it close to right.

The loss of Ling for our midfield getting on top is probably greater than you realise and the inclusion of Gillies doesn't fill with confidence, we need another big defender utility to step up in case of injury, Scarletts and Milburns departure, and form failure.
Darrou is that versatile size with a bit of weight.
Saw a photo of him in action in a TAC match, and he's pretty ripped even at 93kg, looked pretty imposing!
