quote=meto;22913194]YPO,

Remember the curse of Stewart Dew????

This kid ain't fat like Dewey, and yet he carved us in the 08 Granny, sheer power around the ball, and a big kick. He killed a tired worn out Geelong.

That tired and worn out Geelong would have won by 10 goals if we had kicked straight in the first half.

Fact is in the draft we stilladded to our over abundance of smalls, Jed Bews 181cm only and Lincoln McCarthy 177cm, so there's another couple for yer!

So how did you get me wanting to draft players 196cm + associated with that statement

The loss of Ling for our midfield getting on top is probably greater than you realise

Now your taking me for a dummy.

and the inclusion of Gillies doesn't fill with confidence, we need another big defender utility to step up in case of injury, Scarletts and Milburns departure, and form failure.

And I have never argued anything but that for the last 2 years.

Mid fielder these days, give me some size 196cm+

Bit of a cynical overstatment, would've thought!...but anyhow! remember Ling was 189 and about 95kg, it was his weight that made him indispensible around the packs and heavy traffic.
Would like a big midfield/utility type again, that's why I'm pumping Darrou.
Probably won't happen, but that's my take. :)

Blicavs, Wells is very smart! Wonder if Bathie is elevated?

Meto , do we have any info on Kersten's tank. To me he is a Ling type and may have to find a spot else where than at FF.

For the Rookie draft , would be happy to give Crisp a go , think he could be that big mid that we need

I don't see Kersten as a Ling type, with respect to your comments, I see him as the smaller tall fwd, similar to Jack Darling playing off a HFF, at least for his first 2 or 3 seasons.
Maybe he can wax it a bit with johno and Menzel, and occassionally play key, but definately a fwd to begin with in the VFL, that's where they'll be playing him.

Crisp, I dunno! thought about him, tall but not so strong, maybe?... seems to be always running hunched over, looks a little unco,....I might be over critical?
Do you reckon they'll choose a key defender or wait till next year?....carn't see how they can? Then again, might elevate Bathie or Walker?

I see where we were at odds,I thought you were pumping him as a key back,Thats why I was saying to short and I want another 196 cm type.

The beauty really is in the eye of the beholder. Crisps looks like a good potential pick to me.

AS far K being Darling not sure there either. I may be a little premature with out seeing him but 191 is not that tall for a guy who looks like he may he struggle to jump out of his boots. Perhaps im wrong and I certainly look forward to him proving me wrong.

Be good to see Simpkin rewarded in the seniors next season.
I think our midfield is full of very skillful & classy players and Lingy was that non-flashy but physical type of player.
We could do with another Heath Hocking/Matt Priddis type and from what I saw, Simpkin was good enough at that.

Geelong are a tall side, average height is 188.5cm so we need to be sure we don't get too top heavy especially in the forward line with only Stokes, Chapman, Byrnes, Varcoe & now McCarthy the only guys under 6ft.

Add to that Bundy that's six, and Hogan, that's seven and a large number up to the 185-186 mark, check the list there's plenty.
What do you want a midget forwardline, remember Hawkins won the flag for us, no sub 180.

They can elevate a rookie round 1 by putting Menzel on the LTI, you would think Walker Bathie and Simpkin are all chances to go up if they train well and play some good footy in the NAB Cup.

I reckon the club might choose a tall defender with one of our two picks, as always depends who is available though. Be interesting to see whether we go someone like Boseley or a more mature type.

Of that permission to train list two that would interest me would be Mangan and Tighe from Werribbee, the former a key defender and the latter a tall fwd/ruck type so both good fits for our needs. Mangan in particular has had a good year and even blanketed Fev in the finals, along with several other good forwards, I thought there was a bit to like the couple of times I saw him play.

I think Quigley said he only ran a 13.1 beep last year and that won't have improved a lot this year given the amount of time he was out injured. One reason I think he'll need a bit of time before playing regular senior footy despite having a reasonably developed body.

Crisp is worth a look for the rookie draft.

As a side point, I note according to AFL's Patrick Keane's twitter our two veterans outside the list for 2012 are Scarlett and Corey (with Corey taking Milburn's spot). I had expected the new vet to be either Enright or Chapman, would have thought the best use of the vets (i.e. max $$$ saved) would be to have half your B &F winner's salary outside the cap, although we do have a flat payment structure across the list so Smithy Boris and Chappy are probably all on about the same amount. The other reason it's interesting is they've put the youngest eligible bloke on the vets rather than one of the two older blokes-logically you would put the bloke you think will retire first on the vets, so that you avoid the need to have to delist and re-draft (as StK just had to do with Blake) if you need to transfer the spot to someone else in a future year to manage your cap better. Although the proposed new CBA (if it is ever agreed to) would allow us to have 8 vets in 2013, so I'm guessing the club's not really worried about predicting who will retire then with an extra 6 vets spots to use.

Amongst the bigger midfield possibles, I liked him, just thought by the vid he looked a little unco, might have been he was trying to put his head over the ball, and that's not a bad thing.

You weren't wrong bout Murdoch, guess I'd say yes, Jack ok! he's in the frame.
Heard Walker is superfit and training awesome for that Rookie spot, but they might overlook him I think.

On Kersten and that beep test, the guy is going to be a weapon!

Well Scarlett is off that list next year anyway, and maybe one of the other 3 has already signalled his intention to the club that this will be his last?
We're going to need a spot for Jimmy soon.

Precisely, you'd think next year SJ will go on the vets and the year after Bartel, which is why I said who went on this year was always interesting to me, because it would be whoever they think is likely to retire by then (along with Scarlett, who we know is retiring at the end of 2012).

That's why I said I reckon the club must be pinning their hopes on the new CBA coming in for 2013 which shifts it from 2 vets x 50 % salary to 8 vets x 100k, because I'd be surprised if they thought Corey was more likely to be the first to retire (compared to Chapman Wojo etc).

Happy with Murdoch, he has some rounding out to do of his game but anytime you get the combination of elite speed and top end kicking ability, that's gold in the modern game, you have to be happy with that.

Crisp is what you want for the rookie draft, hard at it, committed, good attitude, skills aren't poor, you know he'll knuckle down in a club environment and work really hard, so lots of scope for improvement.

Walker's always been super fit so that doesn't surprise me although I think Bathie could be the one with a good pre season, endurance was the thing he needed to improve last year but impressed in most other areas. Simpkin's probably the most likely to play early though of the rookies.

I agree Kersten will be a weapon. My comment about the tank is just in reference to I'm not sure whether he'll have the endurance required to play a lot of games in his debut year and impact at the pointy end, just because he's got a mature body. Long term he's a very very good pickup though.

Well going by the precedent set by the "Nathan Ablett nominates for the draft" thread, lets see a little more detail on any potential rookie draftees if anyone has any?

Just the usual stuff you chat about in a footy forum like...

1) His personal life, relationship status, plans for having a family.

2) Mental and emotional state.

3) Medical reports. (By all means present them as if you are a doctor, even if you dont know what you are talking about).

4) Smear campaigns and innuendo are all acceptable. (because it seems to add to the value of the football discussion).

5) What motivates this person and what his plans are for the future.

Cheers :thumbsu:

Don't see why you feel the need to try and derail this thread?

Don't see too many Ling parallels.

Kersten has some serious toe. He recorded 2.88 seconds for the 20m sprint in 2010 (when fit) and will be a handful as a lead-up forward.

What hasn't this guy got!
Imagine him working in there with Johno and Menzel, and the destructive smalls like Chappy and Stokes.

Hopefully he settles down quickly and develops the right ethos. Given a full pre-season he may even be a chance come round 1.

The clubs on-field demise will have to wait another year. :p

Pretty sure I heard Shifter say Ling got 2.9 or something like it. Perhaps K's marking will be super strong but lings was better than good and couldn't play that role. Most players need some vertical to help them be more than a one dimension player. Mooney was probably a fine example of a leadup without much leap and he espoused the game had changed from his style.
