Could be a good defender? No good forward
We should wait until we see what the new coach can do. He plays all right for Francou and has shown the occasional glimpse at AFL level.

It would help if when starting this thread there was a list of players whose contracts expire this season. Because every year these threads go up and people who don't understand you can't delist contracted players name anyone they don't like willy nilly.
Will we wait 3 weeks and see what the new coach thinks?....
While the new coach will have an opinion from outside the club the footy ops people will have made the decisions already.

....there is a suspicion it was a 1 yr with option for the 2nd....
Slightly off-topic but what does "with option" even mean? No-one ever gets to the end of a contract and the club says "You were bloody good. Won the Brownlow, Norm Smith and Jack Cahill awards in fact. We'd love you to continue with us but (curse our stupidity) we forgot to say 'with option' in your last contract". Matty Primus had one of these wonderful options and now he's an assistant on the Gold Coast.

It means financial terms for a second term have already been agreed before the first term begins, should such a term exist.

Options are big stuff in the entertainment biz so that if studios have a surprise hit, they don't get nailed to the wall with enormous financial demands quite so quickly by starring actors, but also doesn't commit the studio to producing extra series/sequels of stuff that tanks.

OK that partly makes sense (thanks) but I guess that implies there is some payout if the option isn't taken up. Otherwise there would be no point in the newbie actor/coach/player signing a contract that reduced their options in the follow-on contract.

The person being signed is usually not the driver of options in their contract, its usually the party with more power that puts them in.

It also doesn't imply a payout, btw - its all about the power dynamic.

Thanks again, I think I have it now i.e. "Sign for us for 2 years at 'x' and if you do well enough we will extend the deal 1 year, but still at 'x'. If you don't agree then no deal. If you turn out to be brilliant then it's not until your fourth year we talk big money."
In other words it's the sort of deal that cost St Kilda Ross Lyons.

Hitchcock will stay
The kid has the potential to be a top crumbing forward and, injury aside, his appalling form when he played was the major indicator of how pathetic we are at player development. The trouble is if we make him available to anyone else he will be another Matthew Bode. But then so will Phillips and at least he offered more when uninjured.

With a new coach coming in I expect that many people will survive, especially given the 4 changes already made to our list.

I'd expect 1-4 delistings, depending on how many people we bring in. Maybe even zero.

It certainly won't be the cull you would have expected if Primus was still at the reigns. Where I expect Banner, Rodan, Logan, Phillips, and Stewart would all be gawnn. As it is Banner should stay, Phillips is probably gone, Rodan may be gone, Logan probably won't be, Stewart might be, Pfeiffer might be and Salter might be.

What I would like personally would be: Phillips, Logan, Rodan, and maybe Daniel Stewart to be delisted.

I don't see that potential in Hitchcock. He's quick and good in straight lines, but the bendy, turny stuff and things like checkside snaps etc, he doesn't seem to have it.

He isn't that flashy, but he is skillful IMO as well as reasonably smart. I'm not sure what role he can play for us, but I think he does have some talent. What remains to be seen is whether he can bulk up enough, and stay on the park. If he does those things he could probably be a reasonable player.

Being able to snap a checkside kick from the pocket isn't `flashy' for a pure forward pocket player, its an essential requirement of the job. No small forward without that skill is skillful.

He's good at straight line running and set shots, but thats not really a crumber.

He can kick checksides, and snap around the body. He isn't Motlop or Wingard like, but he can certainly do it.

Not sure why you'd say he can't, even Matt Thomas can do those things on occasion.

I can't remember what Hitchcock does any more. Especially if I've missed the 5 minutes he lasts.

I actually think Glenelg see him as an old-fashioned rover if his body ever holds up, so he could become an on baller.

Look at his highlights that Wargreymon90 just posted. A couple of snap opportunities, and he was fortunate to have the opportunity to straighten up for a simple straight kick at goal.

There's a highlight package of his first game, and its 90% about running faster and kicking straight. If anyone can find a highlight of him actually kicking a goal with a legitimate snap (eg. his body isn't straight-on to the kick) or checkside kick, I'll concede my argument, but I don't think you will.

I agree with Ford's rover comments and if he was bigger he'd be a fair option there, but as a specialist crumbing forward, there's no room IMO.

Alright fair enough then.

He could be handy in the midfield if he can get big enough I reckon. Definitely adds pace and smart ball use, and he seems to know how to get the ball.

It will be the physical side of things that allow or prevent him to play AFL IMO. Lets just hope that our fitness regime improves dramatically next year.

It might be Hitchy's career being saved by the departure of Pearce. A rare `short midfielder' spot is available to win, but he's got so much work to do.
