Milberry has spoken:
I'm hearing that Gallas is over the line & that some no name Brazilian may also be announced this week.

Also heard a whisper that Ange knocked back an opportunity for Ciprian Marica to come on board as our new marquee for a very affordable price. Crazy if true.

Marica would've been terrific, rumours are going around that Heart might sign him. :(

Lots of rumours of him going around even speculation he is going to Arsenal, if Ange refused him he is after only a short term deal in which if a better offer comes in even in January then he will be off or we couldn't fit him in the system considering we are already heavy attacking wise.
Still I agree disappointing.

going to Heart will make sence if its short term with engelaar injured till after the New Year.

Marica would be similar to Karagounis, in that he is still part of his national squad etc so i don't see why he'd come play in our league in a world cup year... and he is only 27 so can still be playing at a decent level for at least another few years. if Ange has rejected him i'm not that disappointed, as we have Kosta and would rather we signed a defender and midfielder than another attacker

still unsure on Gallas, sounds like he isn't that fit and with only a month til the season opener it will be a race to get him fit. as for this Brazilian hopefully he is a midfielder to replace Celeski, cause i don't think Broxham should be first choice for this season

Heard on SEN today that Leijer is officially not the captain. Ange said the decision will be made once all the signings are completed and the squad is settled. Millsy is surely the obvious choice....

been known since the first friendly that he wasnt gonna be captain this year

There is a few names being thrown up. Gallas, Contreras, Kyrgiakos to name a few, who knows but if it was a high profile player you'll think it would have been leaked out by now,
plus the media release was for a major announcement not marquee so it could be anything probably a sponsorship or something.

Get the feeling it's going to be an underwhelming presser.

Milligan loyalty rewarded with Victory captaincy

Victory has chosen Melbourne's Crown Casino as the venue to anoint the 28-year-old Australia midfielder as the successor to Adrian Leijer but handing the armband to Milligan is certainly no gamble.

Last season's vice-captain, Milligan has been a de facto leader at the club since his arrival and the announcement will be recognition of those qualities as coach Ange Posetcoglou seeks to reward Milligan for his performances - and his loyalty.

Though desperate to play in the English Premier League, Milligan - who has two years remaining on his Victory contract - refrained from publicly cajoling the club into releasing him as Victory turned down an eleventh hour $1.4 million offer from Palace two days before the transfer window closed on 2 September.

He made it known privately to Postecoglou that he wanted to go but his dignified silence beyond the sanctity of the club won him extra kudos with the coaching and management staff.

Leijer, who has captained the club since Kevin Muscat's retirement in 2011, was stripped of the armband last week, with Milligan and veteran striker Archie Thompson immediately touted for the position.

Described by Posetcoglou as the "best player in the A-League", the extra responsibility now heaped on Milligan - whom Postecoglou has turned from a defender into a combative and astute midfielder - is likely to be taken in his stride by the man who has made 27 appearances for Victory since signing towards the end of the 2011-12 season. He has also managed eight goals for the club.

Milligan's agent, Sydney-based Buddy Farah, said: "It's a reward and an honour for Mark to lead the biggest club in the country.

"He deserves it and has shown his leadership qualities his entire time at the club and before that with the Olyroos.

"He has the on-field drive and charisma that lifts players around him - and he will lead by example."

Well guessing this is the major announcement then..

Milligan rewarded as expected. Hopefully todays' announcement is a signing.

Afraid not

@davutovic: Victory won't be announcing a marquee today, only unveiling its new captain

Why would they be holding it at crown though?

Could easily have done it at AAMI, i suspect there will be a signing. Murray Shaw said signing + new captain.

Socceroo Mark Milligan confirmed as Melbourne Victory captain for the 2013-2014 A-League season

MARK Milligan will this afternoon be unveiled as Melbourne Victory captain for the 2013-14 season. But contrary to speculation Victory won't yet be unveiling a marquee.

The Herald Sun understands that an offer has been submitted to Chilean Pablo Contreras, who played with Olympiakos last season, but the defender is yet to agree.

Victory was hoping to have stitched up the deal for 35-year-old, who’s been capped 67 times by Chile, but it’s believed they are speaking to other players in the event of Contreras rejecting their offer.

Milligan meanwhile appeared destined for the English Premier League with Crystal Palace launching a third bid for the midfielder of around $1.4m.

But the decision to appoint Milligan as skipper underlines why Victory coach Ange Postecoglou was so keen to retain the 28-year-old.

The announcement will be made at the Crown Casino at 1.30pm with Postecoglou and chairman Anthony Di Pietro also in attendance.

Postecoglou last week revealed to the Herald Sun that Adrian Leijer was stood down as captain and said it was vital that the new leader wouldn’t be burdened by the armband.

"I’ll sit down with everyone when they’re in, we haven’t had everyone in for the last few weeks. I’ve got an idea of how I want to frame it and it’ll be a decision that hopefully will help us be a better club and whoever does get the captaincy, helps them be a better player," Postecoglou said.

“It’s about challenging the individuals within our group. Being a captain and a leader is not an easy task and you want to be careful who you throw that challenge to, because I don’t want to give it to someone whose on-field performance it’s going to affect. Ultimately we still want them to play at their best.

"Whenever you have a season like last year where we didn’t reach our target (winning the title) we looked at a whole range of things and one of them was leadership and how we can get better in that role.’’

With Milligan spending much of the pre-season with the Socceroos, Leigh Broxham has worn the armband in his absence for warm up games.

After three years in China (Shanghai Shenhua) and Japan (JEF United), Victory signed Milligan on loan in the latter part of the 2011-12 campaign just after Jim Magilton took charge although assistant Kevin Muscat was instrumental in making the deal happen.

But after returning to JEF United Victory managed to sign Milligan on the eve of last season and a string of superb performances saw him force his way back into Holger Osieck’s Socceroos side, as he started the three crucial qualifiers in June.

Milligan is expected to lead the side for the first time in tomorrow afternoon’s behind-closed-doors friendly against Newcastle Jets at AAMI Park.

Just saw that tweet.

Interesting if we end up getting Contreras. There's a large enough Chilean community here too...

so now ange has said in a few days for the new signing(s)....
