Pre 2012: Collingwood have no depth, if they get injuries they're gaaaawwwwwnn.
Post 2012: Collingwood have an abundance of new talent through trade/draft and unearthed talent throughout the season due to injuries.
I cannot believe this, absolutely great off-season! Our VFL side is looking very nice. It's going to be tough to see some names on the VFL side when they would be best 22 in other AFL sides. The benefit is that it encourages competition in the players, hopefully we can see a few players really take the lead!

Hmmm, tough so I'll just do a senior and reserve team

Keeffe was about to become our shit truck when he did his knee, there are more options this year but first and foremost the kid has to just get back before we start ear marking his position, knees can take 2 years before you are back to your best and the guy is the size of an apartment block

I rate Keefe so highly that I believe he will be a vital cog in our next premiership team, because he can add a dimension to our defense (and attack) that no one else on our list can. I agree that the first year after an ACL is usually not that great, but younger players can recover quicker, and with the relative light toll on Keefe's body other than the knee injury I'm hoping he can play a part in our senior side in the second half of the season, because his height and mobility gives us such flexibility, probably in the mould many thought Chris Tarrant would give us on his return.

As for the thread topic, I'm not even going to try making a best 22 for this season, we have such depth now that I can see any of 30 + players being in our best 22 come finals time if things develop right for them.

Spot on Matty Keefe is a gun

I certainly hope not, because that would almost certainly mean 2014.. don't be surprised if he gets double G'd at both ends by Grundy and Gault ;)

I can never remember a squad more even and competitive. I think it bodes well for a strong season.

Assuming every player was fit. I can only think of 12 players that I am confident will be in our best 22 by seasons end.

5 Nick Maxwell (c)
10 Scott Pendlebury (vc)
12 Luke Ball
13 Dale Thomas
17 Dayne Beams
18 Darren Jolly
20 Ben Reid
21 Quinten Lynch
22 Steele Sidebottom
32 Travis Cloke
36 Dane Swan
39 Heath Shaw

Then 23 players who all have senior experience ( except Witts & Gault) who have already shown they are serious contenders for the final 10 spots in the side.

1 Alex Fasolo
2 Jordan Russell
3 Brent Macaffer
4 Alan Didak
6 Tyson Goldsack
7 Andrew Krakouer
8 Harry O'Brien
9 Martin Clarke
11 Jarryd Blair
14 Clinton Young
15 Jarrod Witts
16 Nathan Brown
23 Lachlan Keeffe
24 Josh Thomas
26 Ben Johnson
28 Ben Sinclair
33 Jackson Paine
34 Alan Toovey
35 Jamie Elliott
40 Paul Seedsman
44 Corey Gault
46 Marley Williams
48 Caolan Mooney

*And history show 1 or 2 of the draft picks should force their way into the senior side too.
tbd Brodie Grundy
tbd Benjamin Kennedy
tbd Tim Broomhead
tbd Jackson Ramsay
38 Peter Yagmoor
47 Michael Hartley

Good team.. Perhaps as Rnd 1.. Though I doubt we will see daisy or Young early in the season.

As time goes by though I think Keefe takes Maxwell's spot, and Kennedy takes Blair's spot.
There's something about Seedsman that makes me think he's going to break out this year.. Don't know what it is there's just something about him. Always thought the same thing of Beams.

I actually think by end of year Grundy may well be best 22, and that may see Lynch or Goldsack miss out.. Or perhaps even Fasolo if he's not improving and they decide a massive forward line is a good strategy.. I actually think something like Cloke, Lynch, Grundy, Goldsack with Krak and Caff/Dids/Blair would be really ****ing hard to defend against.. Jols and Grundy rotating the ruck/forward positions would double the danger, Jols is a great mark and kick for goal, I think if his body starts wearing out there's real potential in him becoming a deep forward.

If we have a full squad for round 1:

B Russell Brown Toovey
HB Maxwell Reid Shaw
C D.Thomas Ball Young
HF Beams Lynch Fasolo
F Krakouer Cloke Blair
Foll Jolly Pendlebury Swan
Int Johnson Sidebottom Goldsack
Sub: Didak

But I reckon by the end of the year it could well be this..

B Russell Keeffe Toovey
HB Ramsay Reid Shaw
C Beams J. Thomas Young
HF Seedsman Witts d.Thomas
F Krakouer Cloke Swan
Foll Grundy Pendlebury Kennedy
Int Sidebottom Fasolo Ball
Sub: Martin

Interesting you have Ramsey, Seedsman, J Thomas, Kennedy, Witts and Grundy in the side. I cant see that happening unless we are not going to make the 8 so they give some kids a go.
No Q/stick I dont like
No Brown I dont like
No Harry O I do like

i really like this post
if we are to win the flag this year history tells you some players come from the clouds in flag years to have an impact
i think we have half a team of locks and half a team thats up for grabs
i think your list is pretty good and if maxwell wasnt the skipper i wouldnt lock him in for year end
therefor you'd have 11 locks and 11 spots up for grabs, obviously some with better claims than others

I think Toovey, Young and Krakouer are 100% locks. They are very unique and talented players to our team who we require. Toovey is our number one defensive player. Without him we would get toweled by every single small forward in the team. Young is the player we were crying out for last year and I can't see anyone playing ahead of him. Krakouer is one of a kind, can not be replaced and will be locked in our forward line all year.

Dansa, I have similar thoughts. It's a very strong team, as far as depth is concerned. Better depth = not having to play truly 2nd rate players when best 22 guys get injured. Remember how the Saints last 6 of 22 wasn't really good enough? We avoid this problem. Competition for permanent spots should be immense, but opportunities should be rotated... there's 22 rounds x 22 players = 484 h&a games to be played...it's better to share these around among the top30, so as to rest topliners, and give opportunities to our surplus of talented players. It also helps to give enough guys a senior run before the finals, when we need everyone fit & firing, including the understudies.

Think Seedsman has a very chance of becoming a better player than Young in that role, if not this season then the next. Still if Young is not getting a game in our best 22 then we will be absolutely flying because he's a good player
