I'm pretty happy with Salem, haven't seen a lot of him but looks he could become an Yze type with that class going through the midfield/ half forward. Would have also like Freeman. From watching him he looked to be that Sylvia type, with the initial burst from a pack and long kick. JKH is a great pickup in regard to filling a need

Salem - Sounds like he should become a quality hard bodied midfielder who runs both ways and delivers the ball well. Ticks all our boxes, so now we have to back the coaching panel to get the best out of him.

JKH -from his highlights package it seems like he was getting most of his possessions outside of the 50m arcs. Could be a quick half forward who could have a turn through the midfield as well.

Hunt - hopefully a solid but cheap pick up, but at 70kg and 187cm, he'd obviously want to hit the food and weight training to get his weight up over the next 12-18 months.

No doubt that we rated 2 quality players (Tyson + pick 9) ahead of either Kelly, Aish or Billings. Some people in the media pump up some early draftees like Kelly as being exponentially better than pick 9, despite the draft history proving different.

IMO, our strategy made sense, but we won't know for 2-3 years.

Here's the laughable thing about the media

For most of the year Aish was seen as the clear # 2 behind Boyd (at least in my reading anyway)

As soon as we trade pick 2 and GWS show a lot of love for Kelly, the media get stuck into us (Kelly will haunt the Dees blah blah blah)

Well, weren't we going to take Aish anyway???? (according to the media)

Salem interview

Great find!

For those interested the Salem interview starts at 39:50 into the 1 hour recording. Goes for about 7 minutes and my highlight was when he was asked which metro team mate has impressed him the most with how much they have improved and he said Jay Kennedy-Harris! Spoke glowingly about his work rate, unbelievable forward line pressure and just how hard he has worked to improve from under 16's.

Watching some more footage of JKH, he looks like he could be more of a running midfielder than a genuine small forward. This could just be a consequence of the footage that was chosen, though. Definitely has the hands and game sense to play forward, but his vision up the ground, ability to negotiate traffic and then hit targets looks really great. I can see him playing off the half-back line - pressure is really great, as is his run. Could slot into our small forward/mid group with Blease and Kent and rotate with them in game.

Wasn't that impressed by Salem's off-field stuff pre-draft but this is a great interview: http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2013-11-21/salem-eager-to-make-an-impact. Eager kid, does seem very genuine and humble and ready to work.

So true, I was thinking that over the last couple of weeks. How we trade pick 2 and the rights to the prized midfielder in Aish. Now it's the fact we passed over Kelly. Although I would have loved to pick Kelly due to his junior club being the same as mine. Although Salem being a Rovers boy and family owning Rocksalt and knowing his older brother helps makes him a better choice in the end!

I'm absolutely rapt with this draft - three kids who look like they will make a big difference.

I'm stoked that with the acquisition of Roosy, players are genuinely excited to come to the Club again too - Salem particularly in his interview!!

Do we need a new thread for the rookie draft (next wednesday) or just continue in here?

So given that we got three 'midfielders' who's in the mix for the rookie draft? And how many picks are we going to make? Assuming we have two (not including Jetta, who may or more not be rerookied) do we get a tall defender as cover, or another crumber? Or just more mids in the hope that eventually we'll get a really good one.

We have a good position in the rookie draft so I imagine we'll grab a Kayne Turner or Eli Templeton (mids) who were unlucky to miss out.

Then with our picks 3 and 4 I can see us grabbing a tall defender and/or project ruck.

I really can't see us rookie listing Jetta.

At least one pick on a project ruck. Tall defender wouldn't hurt.

This is exactly what I want. For me, there are two targets - Darcy Hourigan and Darcy Cameron.

Darcy Hourigan (SA – KPF/KPD)
Height: 190cm, Weight: 92kg

Play him down back at Casey. Big body, should be able to compete well in the VFL.

Darcy Cameron (WA – Ruck/KPF)
Height: 203cm, Weight: 98kg

Good weight for his size. I'm big on using the rookie list for rucks, let them develop for a while and if they don't work out after a few years, delist and try to find another. If we ever get desperate for a ready-to-go ruck, trade for one.

I also like how they pulled the "future Brownlow medalist" hyperbole out of nowhere. Nothing against Kelly but how he can be labelled this without playing a game is beyond me. Heard the exact same things about Scully and Swallow anyway. How's that working out.

This draft wasn't deep, and that was shown with the number of live picks. Any junior rookie selections would be purely speculative, and we've already made one with Hunt. Nothing against him, but I wouldn't rookie Jetta.

My preference would be Chris Cain as a small forward/mid, Matt Sully as a kpd, 1 project ruckman, 1 mature aged mid.

You think we should roll the darce??

Being a footy fan i would like to say congrats on getting Kennedy-Harris and Salem as your footy club the past few years has been heart breaking to watch. Good luck in 2014 and adding them two new boys that can be stars for the demons giving you some class to add with Barry and Hogan so i hope you like my post and good luck with Roos.

I'd take Darcy Hourigan in a heartbeat - having seen him play at the championships I was absolutely shocked he didn't get picked up. Arguably the greatest surprise coming out of the draft. Would have had him going in the top 30 if not creeping into the first round given the demand at several clubs for a key forward.

We should definitely take him as a rookie, could end up a fantastic KPD for us. Is a gorilla of a player.

Travis Tuck? I was impressed by his size in paper the other day, much improved from his time at Hawthorn, not to mention his old man and older brother played their best footy as they matured.

First of, congratulations to our club that we love, for getting some great looking picks in the draft. Really like the look of these kids.

This is how I look at the draft, yes, we gave away pick two, but when you have Jesse Hogan officially coming into the side next year, it's like pick 2 never left us. So, pick 9 = Dom Tyson, Jesse Hogan, and Christian Salem. That's definitely a great way of looking at things, then we got who I was hoping we'd get in JKH.

2014 onwards and upwards, in Roos we trust.

You are always welcome to Popin

Dom Tyson on talent is really worth a top 2 pick on his own, given he can get over injury concerns. Obviously a big call but you have to tell it like it is haha.
