I have heard recently that Hawthorn and Dylan Shiel have been speaking. How reliable that is I do not know, but personally I think he would be a great pick up

He is best mates with Jordan Kelly and played junior footy with him. Not sure if that helps us get him though. Would be a very handy player.

Speaking of Jordan Kelly he is Lachie Whitfield's cousin.

Perfect reason to keep him on the list! Sign him for 2 years and set him the task to bring Whitfield and Shiel to the Hawks, then hand him the Box Hill hawks captaincy as a reward :)

I've said this previously but at our prelim last year Whitfield was blind as a bat going berserk for the Hawks and singing the song like a mad man after we won. He was sitting directly in front of me and a few mates, it was weird to see.

The more I watch us play the more I realise all the time how much we need a solid key back!!! James Frawley.

I am starting to change my mind on Mundy. I think he could give us 2 or 3 great years despite his age and knows how to actually get his hands on the rock in the middle!!!

Frawley and Mundy in free agency would be a good result.

Frawley alone isn't enough though. We've seen this year with the injuries we have had that we are light on for key position defenders. We need to go after two key defenders. One being Frawley and the other via the national draft.

What is Gary Rohan's contract status? Like Tom Mitchell he's unable to crack a game at the moment. Assuming his leg has healed he could be a good pick up and would add to our Ranga stocks.

Rohan? Noooooo.. The guy gets 3 kicks a game! Pass. Mitchell though mmmm

We'd have Frawley, Gibson, Schoenmakers, Spangher, Brand, Heatherly all on our list, plus a young KPD. Even if we did retire Lake.

That's an investment into 1 position with far too much of the list, and makes no sense.

Heatherly and Brand are unknown. Spangher is a jack of all trades but professional in none. Schoey is just back from injury and looks very much uncomfortable holding down that no1 KPD post and Gibson plays his best against the 3rd tall when he can peel off.

I think it's very relevant we target at KPD, as we stand I'm not to keen to put my faith in Brand and Heatherly.

Fwiw - I actually thought Bouman was a decent talent.

I've watched them quite a few times and they're coming along very nicely.

Point remains, regardless of where they fit in the pecking order, you don't just load up your list with a plethora of one type of player. In this case KPD.

We have other needs as well.

From memory Whitfield is a massive Hawks supporter. It would take a lot to get him, but with a good offer on the table he would definitely say yes and it would be a matter for GWS to get something worthwhile in return.

Hawthorn's Jordan Kelly is Whitfield's cousin and yes, Lachie is a massive Hawthorn supporter. Was as happy as any of us when Hawthorn won the premiership last year.

But yes, he did re-sign with the Giants recently, so it's difficult to see him coming back to Victoria in the near future.

Totally agree. I think it's feasible to target a quality KPD and another good ball winning mid eg - Dylan Shiel

Agreed. Being a former pick number 2 does not mean that you can play at AFL level and it seems that is the only reason many folk on here would love to have him. We have seen nothing from him in his limited game time and if he can't cement his spot at GWS then......

I really don't think there is a lot to see here folks. How many on that list would really be in our sights other than those in bold given the "Franklin Fund".

2015 may be a bit of a transition year for the Hawks with a view to acquiring a star player/players via free agency at the end of 2015.

Remember this article? http://www.afl.com.au/news/2013-10-13/cashedup-hawks-to-swoop

Some interesting points include:
* The Hawks had reportedly budgeted to pay Franklin $4.5 million over the next four seasons.

* The ranks of out-of-contract and 'gettable' opposition players is also light on for star quality and it seems the Hawks' biggest remaining target is Brisbane Lions ruckman Billy Longer, 20, who would make only a modest dent in the Franklin Fund.
That makes it more and more likely the Hawks will bide their time until next year's free agency and trade periods, or even wait until 2015.

* Remember, it was revealed last week that the Franklin-to- Swans deal was a year in the making.
It's quite possible Hawthorn has already approached a big fish's manager in the same manner. So if an opposition star puts off contract talks at the start of next season like Franklin did this year, it could be the Hawks have already got their talons into him for 2015.

* However, the Hawks could even hold off until 2015's free agency market, which looks particularly strong at the moment.
Star midfielders Patrick Dangerfield, Dayne Beams (signed at Pies), Trent Cotchin and Ryan Griffen are all set to become free agents then.
All would come at a high price, but that should not be a problem thanks to the Franklin Fund.
The considerable salaries of existing Hawk stars such as Sam Mitchell and Shaun Burgoyne will also probably be off Hawthorn's books by then, while Luke Hodge will have either joined them in retirement or be playing on a reduced contract (add Brad Sewell and Brian Lake to that list).

In short, the Hawks could set themselves up to throw a Swans ransom at Dangerfield or Cotchin.
Of course, the Hawks could pursue a number of quality cheaper options. Saint Jack Steven and Eagle Scott Selwood (no thanks) fit that bill among the 2015 free agency pool.

With that sort of talent potentially available, Hawks fans should rest easy that one way or another the Franklin Fund will deliver them a replacement star or stars.

It may not happen this October. But it will happen.

2015 Free Agency List:
EMERGING stars Rory Sloane, Steven Motlop, Luke Shuey (there was a Shuey to Hawks rumour during the trade period last October), Stephen Hill (Interesting one) and Daniel Rich could all become free agents at the end of next season if an AFL Players' Association push to reduce the minimum qualification period is successful.
Zac Clarke, Luke Breust, Liam Shiels, Jackson Trengove, Jordan Roughead, Rhys Stanley, Lachlan Keeffe, Ayce Cordy and Sam Wright are in all the same boat.
However, other high-profile members of the 2008 draft class Jack Watts, Hamish Hartlett, Michael Hurley and Jack Ziebell will not be up for grabs as they are all contracted beyond 2015.
Given next year's free agency pool is already set to include Patrick Dangerfield, Trent Cotchin, Ryan Griffen, Taylor Walker, Matthew Kreuzer, Tom Hawkins, Grant Birchall, Andrew Swallow and Jack Steven, 2015 could boast far and away the most enticing list of free agents yet.

Don't be surprised if not much happens this year via free agency.
This is where players coming out of contract this season and delaying contract negotiations are becoming more interesting by the day (Fyfe) and 2015 free agents not signing contract extensions come further into play.

2014/15 Outs: Sewell, Lake, Mitchell, Hodge, Burgoyne, Hale
2014 In: Fyfe
2015 In: Dangerfield

$$$ say it can happen. 1 of these ins would be considered a bonus but Freo will be after that "Swans ransom" in return for Fyfe.

It was interesting to read back over all of that though.

The number of contract extensions offered and signed by the Hawks in the last 6 months also suggests that the recruiting team may be looking to the 2015 free agency period more so than 2014.

Talking about Sam and Shaun retiring makes me sad :(

Or perhaps we're going make an offer to someone a year out from free agency, and give the club an opportunity to get something for them, ala Lake.

BTW, loving the amount of names being thrown into the ring here as ones we're talking to or approaching(according to posters who know a guy).

Frawley
Shiel
Mundy
Mitchell
Harper
Cotchin

Have I missed any?

At this rate we'll have to ask the AFL for our own COLA to fit them all in. :)

I'm always skeptical of names leaking out midway through a year though, and especially when linked to Hawthorn, as they're often the smokescreen for someone completely out of left field.

I really cant see Frawley leaving Melbourne if they contiune on with their rapid improvement this year. Melbourne has enough money to offer him a decent contract and given what Port Adelaide have achieved, Frawley could be sold on potentially playing finals in acouple of seasons. Personally I hope that the club has a crack at getting Munday an/or Matt Rosa and saves our first pick for a good mid. As mentioned earlier, maybe Wrighty can throw in a reasonable player to get an upgrade on our first pick and get someone really good. I have a feeling that the club might try to do Croad type deal in order to get a premium mid?

lock in cotchin, frawley and young mid (shiel?). let danger re-contract at big $'s with the crows and get sloane.
in 3 years we will be missing mitchell, hodge, sewell, burgoyne and lake (and gibbo?) and get the above 4 in. the silverware keeps flowing.

Or perhaps we're going make an offer to someone a year out from free agency, and give the club an opportunity to get something for them, ala Lake.

And this is why I'm thinking that Brad Hill still may not be in the brown and gold long term should we have out hat in the ring for Fyfe. A bit of counter leveraging perhaps???

Always lots of names being bandied around Echols and they are never even close to the mark.
This is why I am eagerly yet quietly watching the Fyfe and Dangerfield scenario's unfold.
They fit that list management structure perfectly....but can they be pried away from their existing clubs? Recent history says anything is possible and that the HFC is not just a dumping ground for those that can't/haven't made it at other clubs.
My gut feeling is that there will be a big name heading our way at the end of this season that will come as a surprise to most if not all of the football community and I'm not talking Frawley or Mundy.

I'm not sure that the club will want to have a year in limbo with ageing midfield stars in their last year before bringing in the next star with the "Franklin Fund".
From what I've seen so far this season with our injuries I don't think that the next crop of our mids can maintain our standing as a consistent top 4 team without getting another genuine star/stars in in the next 1-2 years.
We can hit the draft but that may leave us in limbo for 2-3 years.
