Strategy 2014 game plan improvements

True , the socialism of the AFL does exactly that , makes the horse race a handicap. Sooner or later the weight probably becomes to hard to overcome..at least in theory. Can we rise again , without falling out of contention , without a good couple of Father Sons , with out an early pick or two..? If we can , the proletariat will be displeased. It will confirm the class system is alive and well.

We all need to remember Colin Carter and Brian Cook's co-signed letter to members in 2012, where they challenged the AFL's 'equalisation strategy', saying Geelong would not be going down and plan to continue to recruit well! Wells - our secret weapon!

I meant to post this pic with a previous post

I remember saying the same thing on the main board after Gaz left too, and had so many opposition supporters say I was crazy! Glad Jimmy agreed with me! :D

I remember saying it too Winty, and Geelong supporters saying I was crazy lol So I was delighted to hear Jimmy confirm our thoughts! There was just that special grunt Rooke had, a never say die! + I also miss his voice geeing them along saying "Come on Boyz"!

+ even though I was furious about Chappy being booted, it is exciting to look forward and be full of hope for the players. + dare I say, hope like hell that Daniel Menzel can get back! It's soul destroying to see players like Rooke, Menzel, Egan succumb to injuries! + the same hopes for a healthy and fit Vardy + Simpson! *crosses fingers*

Just for the record, as it's becoming used a bit this thread, PERSONNEL? Nothing personal here.

+ while we're on the spelling

It is 'practise'
A solicitor has a legal practice and footy players practise their skills at training :p :D

I agree with you! CS combined with Moons giving Tomahawk the pep-talk + as soon as Duncan came on the game just turned! It was one of the best GF for me, probably more because I was there! + also like his insistence on versatility from the players! + he also got us through without a ruck![/quote]
Ottens? great #1, if not the best.
West was a good #2 in 2011 also.

The bottom line is I hate losing.

I can’t stand it. I don’t accept it.

As long as I can remember, with anything, all I’ve wanted to do is win.

"I can’t even let my daughter win at ten-pin bowling because it doesn’t sit well with me.

There are so many stories of me as a kid tormenting my mates at footy or cricket because I would never give an inch.

It was everything. It consumed me. And that was what drove me in my football career. Every marking contest, every scrap for the ball – even if it was at training – I had to win. I was obsessed with winning. I still am."

The one and only great, Matthew Scarlett

No wonder we had such a team full of champions, they obviously all felt similar

Funny enough, I am good friends with Desmond Haynes the West Indian opening batter from the great cricketing side they had, and he hates losing more than anything, he won't even play pool if he thinks he won't win. It seems to be a characteristic shared by greats

These are some stats I found and I think our game plan is fine. Just need better efficiency

Key Stats:
Inside 50s conceded per game 2nd
Time in forward half differential 1st
Opposition score from clearance 1st
Inside 50's 1st
Goals kicked 2nd
Behinds 1st
Total disposals 2nd
Total kicks 2nd
Total Handballs 3rd
Total Marks 2nd
Total Contested possessions 2nd
Total Uncontested possessions 2nd
Total Marks inside 50 3rd
Total Rebounds 6th
Total Frees for 1st
Total Tackles 2nd
Total goal assists 2nd

Only team with top 4 in:
Scores 2nd
Scores against 4th

Things that didn't look good was:
efficiency 7th (at 72.3%, North who were first had 74.2%)
Bounces 18th (being a slingshot style of footy I would have thought more bounces, but may explain high number of disposals)
(also did Motlops kick to himself on the run up for goal count as a disposal. Just kidding on that one)
1%rs 13th (But we did have a lot of the ball and tackled a lot)

Missing stats:
Also I did not include where we were with clearances and Hit Outs, because of this stat
Opposition score from clearance 1st making that fairly irrelevant.
*Don't know why Total and Average were different. Every club plays the same number of games

They are just some stats I found on the spot.
I don't think it is the game plan. I think it was bad luck. Like Scott said their is a lot of luck in winning a premiership. Injuries to Hawkins and Enright didn't help and the Suspension to Chapman. Also a few very lucky goals went to Freo and Hawthorn, and some very unlucky bounces like the one to Blicavs.

how many games did we win and lose with simpson in the side?

Just thought I would add is that the two losses with him were against Adelaide and Brisbane. One after the siren and one by 2 points. Also I need to stress Simpson did the right thing and play on. If you read "The Mission" they explain how important it was for us to stick to the game plan no matter what.

And Mr Experience Joel Corey pressed him for the pass.

That's not even the issue, that he pressed him for the pass. That is our game plan. I think it was that he just kicked it long rather than Hawkins on the lead. Hawkins wont get out marked and game is over. Corey had time and space to see it. It was inline where he kicked it. Hawkins got in front of his man. All he needed to do is take just a tad off and kick it too his advantage.

No, he short passed it to Corey as quickly as he got it. On Corey's call.

I'll never understand why both Selwood and then Corey we so keen to play on.
And you could say the same thing about the last 40 seconds of the 2009 GF.
That whole passage of play was so crazy it was scary.

Probably won the GF, but geez, if you lose it doing that you are going to cop a hiding.

And then we can go way back to the 2005 semi. The lack of will to actually play on cost us the game.

The following stats and strategy makes you realise how out of touch those of us who were critical of the clubs stop play tactics were:

Most people don't understand much about the tactical side of afl at all or the effort and detail sides put into it. Even on here I read the majority just understand the very vague interpretation the media gives them of what we are doing with really no understanding of how it operates

Then as soon as we lose a game or so, they get the axe out and it's all the game Plan the coach, when they don't even know what they are talking about.

Tactics in AFL are my big interest and passion when I comes I AFL. when I read people like the above it's always frustrating personally

Can you enlighten us then?

Not quite sure what you are on about.

The point of my post was to demonstrate how little those of us outside the inner sanctum understand about how game day strategies are conceived and how they are employed. And how quickly they evolve. Even coaches at the elite level comment that things change so quickly you can't afford to be out of the mix for very long before you lose touch. That's how quickly the game changes.

Many of us expressed concern about us not getting first use of the ball from stop plays last year. What the link demonstrated was that it was deliberate tactic to concentrate on the second phase of play and the statistics illustrated that tactic worked.

The point of my post was to illustrate how little those of us who are not at the coal face know of the team strategies and player management at our club. None of us outside the club can come close to the paid and informed professionals whose task it is to produce and refine our game day strategies and who know first hand and intimately the strengths and weaknesses of the playing group.

I say that as someone who has a keen interest player management. Not just in the AFL. Including following how people with proven records have gone about their craft in a variety of sports.

It'd be interesting to see some follow up stats on that, though - where we ranked for scores from clearances, opposition conversion of I50s and scores from turnovers for and against. It'd also be interesting to compare those figures to our rankings during the glory years.

bottom line is we have a huge improvement brewing from within. I really think Caddy is going to have a break out year, akin to Motlop this year. Varcoe looks really really good. Fit, hard and quick. Still got those skills too. Blitz will step up again. Couple that with Hawthorns decline from (a) Buddy and (b) their best onballer being another year older and some retirements that will hurt them. I see Sydney as a bigger threat than them, and Sydney generally cant beat us. **** im excited...

Agree TJ. However the take home message for me was the innovation. Really encouraging to see our brains trust being so innovative. And, on the basis of the exposed info, the outcome was positive.

the fans, might not know what happens in the "inner sacnctum" but we do see what happens on gameday, and to me that's the most important part, after all i'm after winning results.

But you have zero idea if the plan failed or worked.
A win or loss doesn't determine that.
