Full time...

WA 11.7 73 beat SA 9.18 72

One point win for WA, looks like SA were just too wasteful in front of goal. Partington finished with 28 touches and 1 goal, BOG by the sounds of it. Bennett had 21 for WA, with Jones kicking 4 goals.

Why can't we see stats yet?

Wow haven't been to Lathlain in ages. What a paddock, walking around the other side I needed to bring my passport, very open ground but there wasn't a lot of runners that took advantage, at least from what I could see. Also found it hard to notice who was in the inside contests most of the time, on a bright day SA numbers impossible to make out and WA not too much better, especially without a telescope/(binos at a normal ground).

Quite a good game in the end, very competitive and the best team won because there was no way SA deserved to sneak that one at the end. Their kicking and decision making was deplorable, shocking stuff, especially when you could see they were more skilled than their opponents. Their midfield was on top of WA for most of the match, but let down by pretty much everyone with their kicking, marking and just what they did with the ball, too much x-factor, to little simple stuff. If SA are meant to be a favourite for the champs then based on this performance Vic Country have nothing to worry about.

WA did ok without being impressive, they just took their chances, especially their key forwards which was decisive in the end. SPS was imo, the most talented player out there, without being BOG. He was just the focal point of everything, was organising his team all the time, committing himself to contests all over. More fitness and endurance next year and he'll be amazing. Was mostly outside playing but you could see a good inside game there.

The other one for WA was Waterman. Strong marks around the ground, very solid and he worked hard and deserved all his goals. West Coast may have to give up a first rounder for him, unless they tank next year but he will develop into a decent forward for them in 3-4 years, which is great list wise. Other forwards that did ok were I think, Snadden and Mountford (25 & 35).

One disappointment for me was Ah Chee. Now I don't know the reason for it but he spent 3/4 of the match in the forward pocket pitching a tent and reading the newspaper. Whether by team orders because the coach said so, or he needed to rest because of injury he hardly got any of the ball because it was hardly in the WA forward line, and when it was it was to the talls, there was no forward press so there was rarely anything for him to do. When he got the ball he looked good. There was a moment at high half forward where he took a contested mark, effective kick inside fifty which led to a goal. Why he didn't do more of that I don't know. Last quarter he was let off the chain to roam around mid/half back but didn't do a terrible amount, at least from what I could see.

For SA Snelling was their best and most likely BOG, I'd give him he three votes. Did everything, though I think he's disposal efficiency towards the end wasnt the best but without stats I'd say he was the one getting the most of it. The other one to impress was Haysman, his clearances were half the reason it was played more in the SA forward line. Partington did ok too, liked what I saw and he worked very hard but wasn't as flashy as other two, who are short people by the way! A lot more impressed with them than I was with Bennett and Hackett, their disposal was horrid, even amongst some good play.

Now the WA defence was not very good, a lot of needless turnovers but my god, some of the SA stuff in the forward fifty was just amazing in its ineptitude. There was a five minute period where the ball never left their half and they had seven shots at goal for the net result of five behinds. The worst offender in my eyes was number 7, Isaya McKenzie. All game he tried to do flashy x-factor stuff but his football iq is in single digits, so he never pulled it off until finally a few minutes after spraying two shots in that intense period is scored a goal by grubbing it along the ground to curve through the middle. Also single out Francis, played forward and don't see any "Bonts/Fyfe" there in that display. There was one moment where he evaded two defenders only to miss from a small angle 15m out in the 2nd qtr. His highlight for the match was sea gulling a goal after Partington created the loose man.

Probably not the disaster I am making it sound out to be, but SA bad, was just very bad. Bonner didn't have a good first quarter but was impressive afterwards out of the backline. Some mids kicked goals, so there are positives, they just weren't very cohesive, probably suffering from needing another strong forward target.

Didn't see a lot from Jonty, just couldn't spot him out there and Clark for WA only intermittently too but I think both were involved quite a bit.

No doubts the stats and other reports from this game will prove me wrong, but this is my unfiltered notes, haven't read anything else. May be more but I'm in a rush for now. Happy to answer what questions I can if people have them.

Great write up! Much prefer your thoughts rather than read mostly useless stats.

Ok two things I've noticed straight away is that I've must have attributed a lot of work in the second half that was by Partington to Snelling, who must have had a quiet second after firing in the first.

Also the numbers which corresponded to names in the football budget were wrong for some players. Going to have to figure out who was who from memory of the numbers later. Is there a correct line up with the players numbers somewhere?

First I saw of players was in the football budget when at the ground

You must be new to this!

The AFL are notoriously secretive about it all. Twomey has live stats fed to him but we will likely only get basic stats posted on Wednesday.

Well when your sitting in the press box and champion data are in the same room, you'd expect him to get the stats. IN fact, Champion Data actually hand out a stats sheet at every break to all the journalists in the room.

Great write up mate, very insightful for all of us not there

Jeremy Goddards 43 was most definitely out there, he was rucking most of the time. Didn't see Strnadica, only 50 was SA's (Parella) who spent time as the loose man in defence but never really having influence.

Think I might have been mixing Snadden and Smith up somehow, Mountford definitely played and was sure he took a mark or two and scored a goal. Powell-Pepper had a loud supporter near me when he did anything (like come to the interchange :D ). There was a mum too trying to talk to scouts, of an underage boy from WA, but didn't hear who he was.

McKenzies 'goal' was in the third quarter so easy to find out who really scored it, he game was even worse then if he didn't score.

It was a decent contest though because of the score line. WA may have coughed it up but I'm sure the count was worse for SA. Team DE% would be interesting to look at.

Harrold was the epitome of hot/cold did one or two good things then kicked it straight to the opposition a few times. Took a one handed mark on the wing in the last quarter.

Tons of scouts there, they are very talkative to each other without saying/committing a lot. No idea which clubs where represented by who, it never came up but clearly everyone know everyone. There's definitely a 'look'. They all talk like teenage girls in that the that whisper loud enough to hear but not make out the convo. :D

Saw Kevin Sheehan, after the game he did the rounds talking to the scouts. Didn't see Twolmy, or the CD peeps but they may have been on other side of coaches box.

All in all quite interesting for an unplanned day out.

Great write-up there mate, even if you were bluntly honest. That's the thing though, SA sides are always traditionally renowned for their skills...so to see such poor skills is a blight on the team big time. I know they are a lot better than that. Hard work is to come that's for sure. You can win the midfield but if you don't kick straight well that doesn't help does it. The most overlooked stat in footy is kicking for goal, so much focus on contested ball or clearances, they only work when you kick straight!

Thanks for all th info from yesterday's game. Hope that there will be some people who make it to the Metro v Country game.
