Considering he's coming back from ankle surgery it's encouraging that Sylvia is running with the main group at all. Not that I would ever advocate rushing through rehab, but perhaps the law has been laid down and he's pulled his finger out. One can only pray.

Personally, there's nothing better than seeing a whipping boy turn the corner.

When is this bloke gonna get a fair ****ing go here ?

I agree that a pack of BF posters had a per-determined position on this guy, which I didn't like. I thought his kicking in last year's preseason games was terrible, but put it down to being behind the 8-ball fitness wise.

But from what I'm hearing second hand from a club source, it's true that he is actually pretty slack & undisciplined, and that hasn't endeared himself within the team & is a bit of an outsider.

Agreed. To quote this from the west article "Sylvia kept pace with Matthew Pavlich and Zac Dawson during the session’s time trial, but still lagged well behind the club’s best runners including de Boer, Tendai Mzungu and Stephen Hill". He's just come back from minor surgery and it seems hes in the middle tier group for fitness, so I'd take that given it's only the start of pre season and his fitness will get better by the end of it. Comparing him to Mzungu/Hill was pointless, they're elite runners.

After the Richmond game where Ballas kicked 6 goals Hayden was interviewed about giving Silvia a big congratulations for his hard work saying: "I give him a pretty hard time at training so it's important to recognize the good stuff"

Respect to be earned.

too be honest, ballas would be the type to say "come on maggot, one more" when he is spotting you during bench presses

i was like ... everyone lags behind those guys

Harry Reems you should have come today mate. Caty Price was there and she wasn't looking too shabby. She looks like she has slimmed down a bit as well.

New Boys:

Even from just the little snippet I seen of him today, Lachie Weller is going to be fantastic. He looked every bit as smooth with ball in hand as his highlights package and that was only from just a kick to kick. When they were doing running at the end, Blakely was running with the elite runners which tells you something about his fitness base and I can't wait to see how he goes in the 3km. He also didn't miss a target that I seen during the kick to kick they had. He did look smaller than his 189cm billing and looked barely any taller than Weller or Langdon from our vantage point although E Shed assured us that he is definitely taller when they are standing next to each other. Deluca is bigger than I thought he would be and is quite broad shouldered. I didn't see much of his skill work or Langdon's either. Hurley looks great although his marking on the lead needs some improvement. It's almost like he is trying to mark it with flat hands and the ball just keeps bouncing off.

Older players:

The only ones off the top of my head that were missing were Fyfe, Clarke, Johnno, Mora, Suttcliffe and Lachie. Despite having his finger in a splint on Friday Danyle Pearce was out there training. As the article said De Boer was killing it in the running and looks in ripping nick. Mind you every single player out there (including Sylvia who looks like he has lost weight) looked in fantastic condition. The skill level with the ball from a few guys when they were doing some circle work left a lot to be desired. They were missing simple targets from 30m if that with not a helluva lot of wind to speak of. Luke was out for some laps and he looks great and doesn't seem to have any kind of limp. Tanner was being put through his paces with a lot of run throughs.

I suppose that'll do and if anyone else that was down there wants to add anything then feel free.

Well I got there for some of it, got held up this morning so didn't see the start of things.
I watched from behind the goals as the defenders group went through positioning exercises. In this group were McPharlin, Dawson, Duffield, Silvagni, A Pearce and Hurley. Smith, Ibbo were running laps and MJ wasn't around. I really like the look of Pearce, he is so nimble for a big guy and has really neat skills. High hopes for him, hopefully he has the determination and aggression to play as a defender at the top level as he seems to have the size and skills for it. Hurley is a good size unit and moves beautifully. A real athlete. Time will tell if he has what it takes to learn the game. Will be a real bonus if he does. A guy that size with his aerobic capacity and athleticism.

Saw my mate Ollie and wandered over for a chat. We both agreed that Ross should roll the dice this year and forgo some of our defensive stalwarts in favour of more attacking players and game style in general. Hoping to see the likes of Duffy, Crozier and Weller given early opportunities. I believe this is our year where we have to have everything go right and be prepared to play all out attack at the pointy end of the year.

There was a bit of kick to kick going on by now in groups from varying distances and I managed to pick out Weller and Langdon in their groups. Langdon was clearly overawed and dropped a sitter and duffed his first few kicks but it was good to see players and coaches alike getting around him and offering encouragement and advice. Weller looked like rolled gold, smooth mover and his kicking is clean, low and his action effortless.

Some players including all the new boys then went to running drills while others continued to do ball work. Some of the players I noticed during the ball work were:

Moller - although Gaskin (who I was sitting with by that stage and watches more training than I do) doesn't rate him athletically or for attitude I was impressed by the way he was moving. He does have good skills for a guy his size with a nice kick and he can take a mark at full stretch. I'm not sure he's going to make it but you can see why he's being given every opportunity.

Sheridan seemed to be everywhere getting involved. He's a nice mover and a good kick but he would want to make every post a winner with the likes of Weller and Blakely breathing down his neck. I see him at best as a Brad Hill type that glides around linking up and delivering the ball inside 50.

Crozier - developing some real presence about him now. He looks powerful the way he's running and can really hoof it. I have him in my starting 22.

Duffield looks very fit and does everything with the assurance of a veteran. Ditto Mzungu, Dan Pearce (who always looks a million bucks on the track).
Clancee is very fit as is Deboer but I rate these guys as the sort of players we have to consider depth as others with better skills/more hurt factor come along.

Stephen Hill is just an incredible runner. He was doing end to ends and laps and just makes everyone else look clumsy. His gait is effortless and he was smiling and joking around barely cracking a sweat as he pumped k after k into his legs.

Pav looked serious, low key but intent. The ultimate professional. Sandi looks great as does McPharlin. Dawson looks like he always does, a geek who somehow wandered out onto the field but he always does everything and is just plug and play. Mundy punched out laps as did Sonny who also looked more serious than usual, not cracking jokes and smiling as he normally does when he runs past others. Balla was a bit like that too, just looked low key and intent. Ibbo also pounded the white line, ditto Spurr.

Was great to be down there on such a beautiful day and catch up with Ollie, Gaskin and JMT. I almost prefer this time of year when its all about possibilities and there isn't the stress of game day every week!

beautiful post :) thank you

i blame him for giving the anti-dawson group their initial voice :)

Just gave them an early start. Zac's style was always going to throw up opportunities for the deep thinkers to gripe, and to declare his spudliness.

Makes it easier to identify them, so it's handy when weighting opinions on BF later on.

E Shed, thanks or the write up.

Great to hear McPharlin is out there.

I am liking what I read about Pearce too.. WIth regards to Hurley is he being groomed as a key position backman or more as a tall line breaking defender? kinda like Johno

It seems the boys realise next year could be the last real chance given the determination of them all. Excited for Sheridan too, lots of people saying the same thing about him, he just needs to take it in to games. Helps that Weller will push him for a spot as well.

From the little I've seen and heard, the latter sounds the more likely for his skill set. Screams rebounding third tall (or flanker) to me.

Hurley is certainly big and athletic enough to be a KPP. I suppose it will depend on his skill set and how it develops as to how they use him.
He could go toe to toe with power forwards but does he have the smarts to zone off and know when to run off his man?
I think its more likely initially that they would just tell him to follow someone around and play a negating role while he learns to read the game.

Thanks for the reports. And now for the grilling....

Any signs of A.Pearce bulking / strengthening up? On watching him at Peel last year, I felt that his 199cm/87kg frame would be too easily knocked off the contest at the senior level and I'd imagine a bigger frame is going to be a pre-cursor for his debut hopefully this year.

Great to hear Deboer and Clancee are commencing preseason in fine fettle after their injury interrupted 2014.

People have different body types and its more about core strength these days. Dustin Fletcher has never been big and he's been playing forever.
I see him (Pearce) as hopefully a Carlyle type, tall athletic and just a good footballer.
To answer your question I couldn't say how much weight he's put on but he doesn't look skinny. He's not a gorilla but he has an athletic build.

Like E Shed said he isn't a big, solid defender so it's hard to really notice how much he has put on if any at all. I would be surprised if he hasn't spent a bit of time in the gym over the off season though.

Solid work gaskin :rainbow::thumbsu:

(BTW I'm officially on the Seahawks now)

Great to hear although you jumped on a year too late ;) Be prepared to be frustrated at the moment as we have so many injuries to our starters.

For games that aren't on T.V I can give you a couple of sites to download the matches from.

Just need him to bring the footy to ground anyway and let one of the 15 midfielders on the ground take it away towards goal.

I watched Lewis Jetta absolutely destroy some bulked up tanks at the bench press on the TV yesterday.

Appearances can be deceiving.
