Anyone else not that enthused by this year's defenders? If you can find some good cheaper/mid price/rookies to fill your back line perhaps spend more on midfield and forward?

The backs are absolute rubbish. I'm thinking about just running a third rate backline until I can settle on a few.
Malcheski looks a bit expensive. I think Waters is a lock. Will be looking closely at Mayes - especially now Hanley might be a late starter.
I think Jake Lever gets time as a first year. But I am not impressed by the defenders this year.

Is Brett Goodes worth the gamble?
He's a rookie, so he'll have to get elevated first. But there's a pretty good chance he'll be elevated for Clay Smith at the start of the year.

If he plays, he'll be switching between HBF and wing, and probably has a good chance to score fairly well. But I honestly don't think he'll play much AFL.

It's hard to decide whether loading up on mid-priced defenders, rookies or premiums is the way to go this year.

There aren't many good options in any area.

Anyone got any thoughts on Scott D Thompson? Why was last year so rubbish? Owned by 1 %

Why did he have a down year though, and whats to say he will bounce back.

There is probably a reason for his sub par year last year, but none that I have seen yet.

Personally i think he had slightly down year (maybe 5 points). Apart from 2013 all his averages have been between 77-88. I think he is likely to stay within that range again. If he ends at the lower end (77-83) he will likely need to be traded. However, if he ends up around 85-88 he could be handy at D5-D7 for the season.
SDT SC scores 2009-2014:
2009 - 80.8
2010 - 77.1
2011 - 84.7
2012 - 87.8
2013 - 98.2
2014 - 78.6

No there isn't many. I'm hoping Goodes gets a game for Dogs. There are a few like Ibbotson Clancy Pearce and Waters. Other than that maybe find some rookies and hope for the best!

Like a lot of people I'm struggling to find a good backline setup, considering that of the 6 starters I'll probably have to stick with at least 3 for the entire season.

Is this too risky?: Simpson, Newnes, Mayes, Henderson, Waters, Goddard (Rook,Rook)

IF Simpson & Newnes are keepers I'll just need one of the other 3 to be a keeper and I'd probably consider it a success.

Having a first year player in your starting 22 is always risky, maybe push Goddard into the bench and find someone mid priced (ibbotson/ Kolodjashnij). otherwise the setup should work

What do you mean. Pretty much every team that puts any thought into it will have first year players in their team. They make up the bulk of the rookies.

Agreed.

The question is probably more whether Goddard is likely to get games early.

I'm just ignoring any rookies in teams unless they are above 200K. No one really knows who will get games yet, just best guess. But even if he does get games, Goddard is KPP so doubtful he will rack up the points too much.

I presume you mean unless they are below 200k.

Ben Newton is one you could keep an eye on from Melbourne - but he is for the midfielders thread.

No I mean above. I just assume any rookie I see in anyones team is a place holder, but if they are above 200K you must be expecting something from them, so I assume you put them there for a reason.

Ben Newton is a good chance, Biggs at WB and Cripps at Carlton have all interested me at some stage. But i'm holding off on any rookies or mid pricers until I see NAB cup. Trying to leave my team alone for a bit, because once NAB cup comes most of it will change anyway.

I remember Cam Sutcliffe was talked up a lot this time last year - any feedback from those who ended up picking him?

A year early maybe? Anyone considering him this season? $377k

KK a better option at that price IMO.

I think Simpson and Hibberd are the best valued defenders at this stage and should average 90-95 and I wouldn't expect them to drop too much in price throughout the season.I reckon most other premiums will drop dramatically so youll be able to build a good defence throughout the season when prices of some of these premium defenders drop dramatically

If NAB doesn't throw up some potential starting rookies you'd have to seriously consider an all mid price defence, otherwise I'd go a 2/2/4.

Yeah, nah, stay away.

Started well last year when he played half-back (93 or something game 1), but didn't end up playing the permanent swinging halfback role that he was rumoured to be moving in to.

Dean Rampe currently training with the midfield group

Apparently (I havent heard it) Longmire stated that Rampe would see some midfield minutes this year, Longmire liked the big strong body midfield option of JP, Parker and Rampe

:eek::eek::eek::eek:

Could be 2 spots down back now. Potentially opens the door for Jones, Aliir, Heeney, McVeigh etc

Sam Reid and Lewis Jetta spent time in defence in yesterday's intra club at Coffs Harbour according to Swans website.

The plot thickens :confused::confused:
