Never actually heard of his opponent (Ghem, ranked 172). He has to play him again in the next round of the doubles too!

So Bernie has been back in Oz (Gold Coast) training with Groth and Kokk and their coach, TA's Ben Mathias. He will fly out to Romania for next week's Bucharest Open. Nick will play in the Madrid Masters a following 2 weeks later.

I've been hearing a while back that Nick might get a place in the Bahamas as a 2nd training base not too dissimilar to Hewitt when he played in the latter half of his career. AFAIK Bernie has no such thing in mind.

Would it trouble too much for TA to use their immense funds to set up an academy in the Caribbean. Australia is a relatively dry country and very suitable for outdoor tennis but Aussies shouldn't have to fly all the way back home for training in the middle of the Tour and then fly back out to the other side of the world for their next event.

That's probably a good idea to have a training base over there considering Australia is so far away and most of the tournaments are in Europe and USA.

But who knows what TA does with the money.

I would have thought they liked the opportunity to come home for a bit rather than spend even more time overseas than they have to.

That's what the end of season is for. If you're homesick that is understandable but all that extra flying + getting over lag cannot be helpful. Besides, part of the beauty of playing pro tennis is getting to see the world. At some point you do have to spread your wings and enjoy what's out there.

Always thought Nick would be the type of player who likes to spend as much time as he can home, few weeks playing and a few weeks home. He'll never have a huge schedule
