Lions take Will Redmond, CB, Mississippi State

19024332-mmmain.jpg

The Lions could use some help in the secondary, with Darius Slay and Nevin Lawson pencilled in as the starting CBs at the end of the last season. Accordingly, the Lions choose to roll the dice in the fourth round on a CB recovering from a torn ACL.

Redmond managed just seven starts (all in 2015) and 27 overall game appearances from the Bulldogs. He managed 99 tackles (including 69 solo tackles) and 5.5 tackles for loss. He broke up eight passes and recorded five picks. Redmond started his college career as a nickel corner before becoming a starting corner at the start of the 2015 season.

Redmond has flashed the quick-twitch athleticism necessary for an NFL-calibre cornerback. He accelerates smoothly and has the capacity to change directions fluidly to match wide receiver routes. He embraces the physical nature of football, and is often quick to abandon his coverage duties to attack the line of scrimmage when the offence uses a running play. Redmond will bring to the table starting both at the nickel and on the outside.

His tackling technique will need work, as he often fails to wrap up the ball-carrier securely. He will do his best to disengage from blockers but doesn't necessarily have the above-average size and strength to successfully complete such a task. He is also susceptible to drawing pass-interference and holding penalties due to his predilection to using his arms to slow down and disrupt receivers.

Further, work will need to be done to see how quickly and how well Redmond can recuperate from his torn ACL.

With the 114th pick in the 2016 NFL Draft, The Oakland Raiders select C.J. Prosise, RB, Notre Dame.

650x366

The Raiders need a compliment back to Latavius Murray, and Promise fits the bill perfectly. He will be a great fit in OC Bill Musgrave's offense, given his dual threat status as both a runner and receiver. Is also an adept special teamer which should at the very least, make him suit up as an active member of the roster on Sundays in his rookie season.

quotemokc you're up champ.

With the 115th pick in the 2016 BigFooty Mock Draft, the Atlanta Falcons select Eric Striker, LB, Oklahoma.

14028469-standard-jpg.62759

A bit of a mix between Leonard Floyd and Darron Lee whilst being a bit on the small side.

A natural playmaker boasting terrific awareness, agility and closing speed to prove a consistent threat off the edge. Anticipates the snap count well, exploding past offensive tackles with his initial burst. Uses his short stature as an advantage as a pass rusher, dipping under the reach of would-be blockers and showing good flexibility to turn the corner.

He posted eye-popping numbers over his career, registering 191 tackles, 46.5 tackles for loss and 23 sacks.

Playing a Von Miller-like role for the Sooners, he lined up close to the line of scrimmage in both either rushing the passer or dropping in space.

He is the perfect pick for the Falcons in the 4th round.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
Round 4, Pick 18, 116th overall

DEANDRE HOUSTON-CARSON, FS, William & Mary
6'1", 201lbs

dhc.jpeg

The Colts need secondary help and while Houston-Carson is pegged as a Free Safety he has the ability to play elsewhere in the defensive backfield, having played as a Corner prior to his senior season. He has good size, good coverage skills and good route anticipation. Was a team captain at W&M. He has good hands and good catching technique which help him make plays in defense. However he can play over aggressive and has a tendency to grab and play a bit too physical which he will need to tone down in the pros.

While not llighting up players with tackles, he's not afraid to get in there and tackle ball carriers and while adding secondary depth he will also provide immediate special teams help, having played very well for W&M, allowing him to contribute as he develops in to an NFL right defender. He blocked nine kicks in his college career where he spent time as an edge rusher.

From NFL.COM
Houston-Carson exudes confidence and football intelligence on the field and plays with the swagger of a D-1 safety. In coverage, he is instinctive and responsive and trusts his eyes. While he is a ready, aggressive tackler, he still needs more beef on his frame and has to fine tune his angles to the ball to eliminate some of the big plays he has had a hand in. His physical and mental tools are starter's quality and his special teams talent should get him on the field right away.

A player with good ability and instincts should provide an upside for the Colts in, another, area of need.

larkis and the Bills come on down

Choo Choo it's an FS train going on.

Bills - Round 4 - Pick 117

Sean Davis - FS - Maryland.

PI-FBC-Wisconsin-Badgers-Maryland-20-102514.vadapt.980.high.23.jpg

The Bills are back to drafting defense in the fourth round trying to get some much needed depth. He looked really good as a safety and can rack up those stats. Maryland moved him to CB last season hurt his stock a little however I feel this guy will make an impact in the pros.

New York Jets select Zack Sanchez, CB, Oklahoma

Zack+Sanchez+Kansas+v+Oklahoma+LeaVkMEp0H3l.jpg

Sanchez earned the starting job in the Sooners' secondary back in 2013, starting 37 games all up for Oklahoma (missed two games with a right leg injury in 2015). At 5'11", 185lb, Sanchez is a string-bean and there is a degree of worry that he won't be able to stand up to the rigours of NFL football on a regular basis. However, he is a playmaker (15 interceptions, 28 passes defensed over the last three seasons) and was second-team All-American after a season where he logged 45 tackles (3.5 for loss), five picks and seven passes defensed.

Sanchez is also capable of flying around the field. Although he didn't run at the NFL combine, he turned in times of 4.5 and 4.48 seconds at his recent pro-day in the 40 yard dash, though his tape suggests that he doesn't quite live up to that lightning speed. He probably won't live on the outside with the Jets given his lack of height and bulk, and will more likely make his bones as a special teamer and nickel corner, but that's fine, as the Jets need bodies on special teams and could use the depth in the secondary after cutting Cromartie early in the off-season.

Of course, Bowles was the DC at the Cardinals when they took an undersized player in the secondary, and Bowles helped to shape the Honey Badger into one of the top tier safeties in the league. That's not to say that Sanchez would turn out like Mathieu, but Bowles will be licking his lips with the undoubted playmaking ability Sanchez will bring to the table.

bgt2110 and the Texans on the clock.

As the Texans time is up, the Redskins are approaching the podium.

WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Round 4, Pick 22, 120th overall

Jack Allen, C, Michigan State

6'1", 294 lbs

10611596.jpeg

I wouldn't be surprised to see the Redskins take a center earlier as we need to replace the ageing Kory Lichtensteiger sooner than later. The way this mock has gone the players haven't been there when the Redskins pick has come around but, if they hadn't picked a Center before now, we would probably pull the trigger by this point.

Allen has the personal characteristics you want from a Center with ingrained toughness and great leadership qualities. Physically he isn't the prototype for the position as he is small for the position and his reach isn't as long as you'd like. However he more than makes up for it with smarts, impressive core strength and getting the maximum out of his abilities. He has a wrestling background and knows how to leverage his body to beat a defender. He has good hand technique, awareness of what is going on in the trenches and is reportedly a great communicator.

The Redskins have stated, about the later rounds, "the fourth through the seventh and the college free agents, that’s how you build the core of the team. Solid backups, possibly starters down the line, but really good special teams players. And that’s when you get things rolling, that’s when things are going the right way."
Allen fits that expectation as he has experience playing at guard and tackle which provides some line depth while he is being prepared to take over from Lichtensteiger.
With Allen he probably won't become one of the leagues dominant players at the position, but he will give us a good honest effort at the position which should serve us well for a number of seasons.

The Vikings and Sven are up as are bgt2110 and the Texans still.

Nick Vannett - TE - Ohio State

Looks like the Vikings are going to relocate Ohio State to Minneapolis!

bgt2110 is still up, fuey is on the clock

The Pittsburgh Steelers select WR Tajaé Sharpe from Massachusetts with pick #123.

CRPBWR2WUAAyuRZ.jpg

Under the tutelage of UMass HC Mark Whipple (who was Big Ben's first NFL QB coach 2004-06) before coaching at other NFL franchises.

Playing in coach Mark Whipple's pro-style offense, Sharpe had a knack for finding holes in coverage and often used his size and athleticism to go up and attack contested balls in the air. He's not the fastest player, but he excelled at putting himself in position to make plays, both as a possession receiver and down the field.

It made him a go-to target on third and fourth down for Blake Frohnapfel – who's playing with Sharpe in the game Saturday – and should serve him well as teams pore over his UMass tape.

Has a tall, linear frame with long arms and strong hands to pluck the ball and climb the ladder when needed. He has terrific field sense to know where the sticks are, gaining proper depth in his routes and creating space with sharp footwork in his breaks. Sharpe is fearless with the ball in the air and stays focused on finishing catches.

Is only slipping this far down due to his smaller hands (7 3/4 inch) but his attitude, high performance output & more importantly football IQ is at the near the top of the list for WR's. This kid is a NFL diamond in the dust.

With pick 125 the Packers select:
Spencer Dragno, OG, Baylor.

BU-FB-Drango_Spencer-2015-ISU-Black-14601-e1448404756555-770x539.jpg

Drango was a 4 year starter at left tackle for Baylor and he is coming off a first team All-Big 12 senior season in which he earned Big 12 Offensive Lineman of the Year for a second straight year. While a tackle at College level Dragno will be kicked inside for the Packers as Sitton, Lang and Tretter are all entering contract years and all have had injury concerns. This gives Drango time to improve his technique in a program that is well known for turning mid-round picks into top linemen in the NFL.

Sorry everyone for taking so long with my pick.

With pick 119 the HOUSTON TEXANS select :

JAYRON KEARSE - SS - CLEMSON

6'4
216 lbs

With the 128th pick, the Arizona Cardinals select Evan Boehm, C, Missouri

evan-boehm-ncaa-football-missouri-florida-850x560.jpg

Honestly, the Cardinals are a fairly complete team (especially after trading for a legitimate pass rusher in Chandler Jones) but one position where they do still need help is at Centre. Long time centre Lyle Sendlein isn't going to be re-signed (with Bruce Arians going so far as to presume that he is retiring) and are therefore currently slated to start journeyman OL AQ Shipley. Boehm gives the Cards a player to develop into a future starter, but one who could feasibly start in his first year also.

Bucking Beads OTC with Carolina. Blacky still OTC too

With the 129th pick the CAROLINA PANTHERS select Ronald Blair DE, Appalachian State Mountaineers

One of my sleepers for this years draft. The Panthers focus on strengthening their D-Line

"Blair is extremely explosive and stout on the edge, but then uses a slightly different skill set when moved inside on some sub-package situations," Norris wrote. "He had a number of great games, including against Clemson." We like Blair a whole lot more than NFL Media Draft Analyst Lance Zierlein, who recently dismissed Blair as an "undersized, rotational base end in a 4-3 who might be able to add extra weight and get a look inside as a three-technique thanks to his toughness and strength." Blair won the Sun Belt Conference Defensive Player of the Year award last year after posting 70 tackles, 19 TFL and 7.5 sacks.

With the 130th pick, the Baltimore Ravens select Javon Hargrave DL South Carolina St

Javon+Hargrave+East+West+Shrine+Game+EFKZCCX8FJBl.jpg

A small school prospect who has been gaining traction within the draft community to the point that he is currently Josh Norris' (of Rotoworld) #32 overall prospect and the #45 prospect according to SI.

He is a surprisingly quick player for a man his size as shown by a 1.69 10yd split in his 40yd dash at the combine (2nd best among DTs) with a good motor.

Hargrave has dominated the level of competition put in front of him (39.5 sacks in FCS) including the East-West Shrine game where he was arguably the most impressive player.

Slightly undersized to play in a 3-4 defense at 6'1" 309lbs, he would likely be a rotational DT doing most of his work in nickle formations for the Ravens at the beginning of his career, with the hope of developing in the 3-4D like the similarly sized Timmy Jernigan has begun to do.

With the 132nd pick, the Baltimore Ravens select Dominique Alexander LB Oklahoma

usa-today-8057946.0.jpg

The second somewhat undersized player in a row selected for Baltimore, Alexander will hopefully fill a reasonably big need for the Ravens with off-season release of veteran ILB Daryl Smith.

Alexander has decent football speed and has shown an ability to cover RBs and TEs in college which would be a great benefit to an underwhelming pass defense. He is also not afraid to throw his body around and loves to play downhill against the run with nearly 30% of his tackles in 2015 coming within 2 yards from the LOS.

He will need to add 7-10lbs of muscle and work on his play recognition and block shedding skills, but he could start in his first year at a position where a former UDFA is currently first on the depth chart next to CJ Mosley.
