Regardless of whether the Lobb rumours are true I think like the Brad Hill situation, we have play smart given we are 16th on the ladder this year. The reality is, we are not pushing for a premiership next year so we shouldn't be in the mode of urgently fixing holes no matter the cost. Paying a premium for contracted players wanting to return home to a 2 club state seems ludicrous to me. If they truly want to come home then why do we need to rush?

The club down the road has almost the exact opposite needs to us and if they are serious about challenging for a premiership their precise focus needs to be on grabbing an elite midfielder or two. As much as they'd no doubt like McCarthy and Lobb, they'd have to spend a lot of their currency that they need to bolster their shallow midfield - especially given Priddis is close to the end of his career. They probably aren't going to do a Jetta MkII with Hill either, and Brad's motivation is to play with his brother, not just coming home. So we are in the box seat for all three of these players (and probably others as well) but will it really matter if we leave it another year until they are all out of contract? They'll cost us less and we are likely to have even more currency to spend, whilst also being able to bring in talented youth to develop through the draft. I think we need to get the McCarthy deal done because his value is already low and nobody wants to see him sit out another year but the other two I don't see the need to rush.

Our back line and forward line will still be in their infancy next year, as will quite a few of our young midfielders. But another two pre-seasons and a full year of development (with an opportunity to play AFL) in to Alex Pearce, Apeness, Tabs, Sheridan, Blakely, Weller, Tucker, Balic, Crozier, Hughes, Collins, Uebergang and Nyhuis (plus new draftees) should mean our 2018 B22 is solid enough to lose some older stalwarts (Sandi, Johnson, Mundy, Dawson) without falling in a heap and we'll be in a good position to trade out some of our developed youngsters to bring in some home grown talent (Lobb, BHill, Martin etc).

We need to be patient imo and risk losing an "opportunity" over paying premiums. So I'm suggesting we keep our pick #3 and use it in the draft. We don't touch the free agents so we get compensation for Mayne. I'd probably still keep Clarke personally (over Hannath). We also trade out as much as possible (including surplus to need) contracted players to buy additional picks in the draft. We use one to grab McCarthy. We use the rest in the draft but try and upgrade them as much as possible. If we grab someone in the PSD great. We turn over a few rookies. And hopefully we have a Cat B from up North in mind as well. Next year we then try and grab Lobb, BHill, Martin and whichever other WA players out there that fit our needs. It will also be good timing because there is predicted to be plenty of Eastern-states based talent in next year's draft and not so much from WA.

Couple of things:
  1. Why would Lobb want to be traded out of GWS, who look certain to grab multiple premierships over the next few years?
  2. Why would GWS trade a contracted Lobb and Cam for pick 3 after last year refusing two first round picks for Cam (Lobb 2016 = Cam 2015) - let alone give us something back as well?
I think Lobb should be our #1 target behind Hogan, but just can't see it happening.

No to trading Fyfe or Walters, unless they want to go.

Lobb is a good player. Saw him play about round one or two at the 'G and thought, jeeez, here's a young kid who isn't scared (and when you're 6'3 plus, why should you be?) to take a mark. Liked his intent and the way he could latch onto a fair bit. Honestly he was playing league for Swans until he was about 21 so he should've been snapped up by us anyway, alas, packaging up some players (which will help with cleaning out the much deadwood we've got) and a pick with McCarthy would be good. They'd demand our first selection. I'd be happy to try and wrangle a pick 10ish and give them that for those two.

If they want our first pick, we should demand their pick 10 or something. Or a Coniglio.

He will most likely want to end up going to the Eagles though like all Perth boys though...

For number 2, Cam is worth less now and we offered pick 22 and this years pick (estimated at pick 16) which equates to just over 1900 points. Pick 3 alone is worth 2234 points so that offer is juicier to GWS

Those questions are easily answered, 1. Lobb may want to come home to his family,2. Gws may not want to get shafted like they will be with Mcarthy, so get a deal done on their terms.

Have to agree - what then is our position on O'Meara who is from WA and uncontracted THIS YEAR. We have our pick before GCS in the PSD draft. Not talking pick 3 but should we be testing the waters with some of our tradeable players to get a potentially gun mid if he can overcome his knee injury. Hawthorn seem keen, cannot see why we shouldn't be in a better position given he is from WA and we probably have more room in the cap than they do.

The Silly Season this year is going to be really silly.

Maybe Ross was referring to the off season when he told Freo fans to get ready for the ride.

Balla has just bought a business in Rockingham, loves his horses and his horse property, 2 young children ,is contracted and is 30 years of age. He might retire with the injuries he has copped but leaving to play in the East. Who thinks up this rubbish.

Honestly it is laughable but it is doing the rounds everywhere. Started with Lachie Reid? or perhaps he was just retweeting to the twits.

To be fair to Gossage, he was 100% right with the Lachie Neale signing. No idea where this is coming from but Goss and the rest of the Channel 10 crew seem pretty confident of their info...

Lachie Neal goes on Gossage's radio program each week so of course he wanted to big note his "inside information".

Ballas works for channel 9 and I am betting Goosage knows nothing which is back to normal.

Having said all that if Ballas wanted a trade and we got a reasonable second rounder (because he is contracted next year) it would be a win but Ballas seems the most unlikely of candidates.

Ballas and Compo pick for Mayne to be used for Lobb
Barlow or Ibbo and compo pick for Clarke to be used for Hill
Pick from Collingwood for Langdon trade to be used for McCarthy (+ maybe our 3rd round)
Kersten is uncontracted so steak knives of Pre Season Rookie Draft

3rd pick still on the table.

Anyone think it is a coincidence that we have been negotiating with GWS all year an on the same night Ballas wants to go East and Lobb wants to go hom. Freo are chasing talls and GWS a small. Good chance the deal is already done

PS isn't his business a gym run under management?

I like the cut of your jib however you forget one thing
Chris Bond - the bloke who has not landed a decent deal yet
I am not optomistic.

Gossage was way of the mark re Neale. He was still saying Neale was going after he had re signed.
Not quite. Gossage was saying that nothing had been signed yet - at the same time as Jordan Mcardle was telling the world it was.

There had been an agreement but Goss was right that nothing was signed. Lachs manager even said that the cat was let out of the bag early.

Even though I doubt Ballaz is leaving, Gossage has been pretty certain on twitter as of last night and he has got some stuff right before.

I guess time will tell.
