Dragons Draft Recap:
With the most picks ever going into the draft since the inception of the league, the Dragons have undergone a mini clean out this offseason and used 6 selections in the 2017 Draft.

Will Setterfield (C): UF: PICK 4 AFL: PICK 5
Setterfield joins the Dragons at No.4 set to lead the next generation as the perennial brigade of Swallow 29, Jones 29, Pearce 31 begin to age. Boasting solid numbers over the TAC cups final 3 games averaging 24 disposals topped off by a 10 clearance and 16 tackle performance in the Elimination Final, Setterfield's 191cm frame will help him and fellow Dragon Marcus Bontempelli dominate the midfield battles for years to come.

Jarrod Berry (B,C): UF: PICK 18 AFL: PICK 17
Berry is a solid rebounding backmen who has improved his skills greatly to match his strong athletic abilities, winning the 3km time trial, joint winner in the Beep Test and placing in the top 10 for the repeat sprints and agility tests at the Draft Combine. Captaining Club level, State level and National Academy in 2016, Jarrod Berry joins a very thin Backline group in 2017 as he hopes to settle in and become a key component for the Dragons for the next 10 years.

Will Hayward (F): UF: PICK 32 AFL: PICK 21
This medium sized forward is looking to take his craft to the next level and join the young up and coming forwards of the Dragons. Decimating backlines in the SANFL U18 comp booting 33 goals in 9 games, Hayward is set take the AFL by storm in the years to come.

Josh Rotham (B): UF: PICK 44 AFL PICK 37
Standing 192cm, the speedy athletic defender fits the mould of a rebounding 3rd tall. Has really clean foot skills and can take a strong mark. Looks to cement his place in the AFL over the coming years and in the Dragons back 6.

Josh Williams (C,F): UF: PICK 55 AFL: PICK 36
Williams, product out of Townsville has blistering pace to break the lines at AFL level. This was on show when Queensland played Tasmania where he waltzed away from the opposition with 4 running bounces and slotted a 40m goal. Looks likely to start his career as a flanker with some rotations on the wing until he can improve his tank.

Esava Ratugolea (R,F): UF: PICK 61 AFL: PICK 43
Ratugolea joins the Dragons as a bit of a project player with plenty of X-Factor. Likened to Nic Nat, Ratugolea has a strong leap and contested mark. The mechanics of his kicking need some work (did manage to kick bags of 4 and 8 in the TAC Cup) however the 195cm power house has the ability to pinch hit in the ruck if kicking goes askew.

Team LWP off season -

A fairly quiet one for me as my list takes some shape. I had been flat our with a new job for 2016 which left me out of the loop on alot of draftees.

Happy to make some trades and grab the pair of Callum Sinclair and Darcy Cameron. I think at least one of them will be paying in that ruck/forward role for the Swans and should put up decent numbers given the Swans insane midfield.

Ben Long showed his wares on the weekend as well laying 7 tackles in 43% game time for the Saints. We are very bullish on Long slotting into that forward half for St Kilda and with the way he attacks the game I see tackles, free kicks and goals in his future ;)

Managed to bring in Mitch Wallis, Adam Saad, Aaron Mullett and Adam Oxley to provide some much needed senior depth to a side that was sorely lacking at times in 2016. Too often I was a player or two short because I didn't want to cut my non-playing kids for FA options.

And of course, the banned Bombers return. All of Monfries, Howlett, Melksham and Hooker back should see a big difference in my week to week output.

Really though it's about the 2017 draft for me. With 8 picks in the first 3 rounds there is room to make some serious moves based on my season. If things go well enough and there are clear signs of improvement then I can look to go shopping for some ready made players to keep pushing up the ladder. If I am bottom 2-3 again then I can clear out older guys and absolutely load up with a GWS style plunder.

Raiders off season recap:
With the realisation that the Raiders would be without their two main ruck options for season 2017 the decision was made to undergo a mini rebuild to put them in a stronger position come 2018. Some A grade talent was traded out to improve draft position (and in the end 6 new players were added via the draft) and a few young players that I rate highly were added to the team through trades.

Expectations are not high for 2017 but the list has the potential to take some scalps despite the loss of talent. The longer term outlook for 2018 and beyond has improved significantly. Time will tell if the investment in this draft will pay dividends.

Players traded out:
Callan Ward, Tom Liberatore, Mitch Wallis, Luke Breust, Charlie Dixon, Brandon Matera, Callum Sinclair, Adam Saad, Tom Ruggles, Adam Oxley

Players traded in:
Tim Membrey, Josh Dunkley, Tom Campbell, Cam Sutcliffe

Players drafted:

Hugh McCluggage - Pick 2

There were two stand out draft prospects this season. McGrath, by position, and McCluggage. Taranto entered calculations with his performance in the first round of the JLT but with McGrath off the board I opted with the player that, for mine, had the most runs on the board in his junior career. A goal kicking midfielder, averaged 27 touches and 2 goals a game in the TAC. I traded into pick 2 with the express intent of taking McCluggage who I'm hoping develops into another Josh Kelly. Should get plenty of opportunity at the Lions.

Ben Ainsworth - Pick 6
There was no specific target in mind when I traded for pick 6. I had a clear top 7 players in the draft and my thinking was I'd get one of them here. Ainsworth I thought would be gone at this point so I had no problem picking him up immediately when he was still available. He was an U18 All Australian back in 2015, kicks goals and can rack up a lot of the ball too (last 4 games with Gippsland he averaged 29 touches and 3 goals a game!). Has been likened to Gary Ablett Jnr (and he'll have the opportunity to learn from him and train with him at the Gold Coast) and also compared to Jamie Elliott and Devon Smith. At worst I've got a very good small forward, at best... :D Gold Coast could use a small forward with his ability so we should see sooner rather than later what he has to offer.

Will Brodie - Pick 10
Brodie was one of the players I'd reckoned would go in the top 7 in our draft. A ball winning inside mid who showed what he can do against the Bombers in the 2nd JLT game with 2 goals, 18 touches and 4 tackles.. most of which came in the first half. As he builds his tank his output should increase. Very driven young player who should get the most out of himself at the Gold Coast. Could have found my Ward replacement right here.

Brandan Parfitt - Pick 15
Berry was still left on the board at this pick and while my head said Berry my heart said Parfitt. Berry is another that I had expected to be unavailable at my pick but Parfitt is a player I'd done my homework on early and when trading for pick 15 the plan had always been to use it for Parfitt. I expected Parfitt would be available still in the early 20s but I didn't want to risk not getting him. Another U18 AA in his under age year Parfitt can find the footy. Whichever level he's played at he's risen to the occasion and there's early signs that he'll handle the transition to the AFL in the same way. Highlight of his junior stats is probably his 47 disposal, 10 mark game in the U18 SANFL.. he also won his senior team's B&F... when he was 16. Watch this space.

Zac Fisher - Pick 24
My first live trade for this draft I had to jump back in and grab Fisher when I saw him sliding. I can only assume his height has kept people at bay but this kid can play and is a ball magnet who has been compared to Lachie Neale. I expect we'll see him in Round 1 for the Blues as they move forward with their rebuild. He has played seniors in the WAFL so is capable against more seasoned and mature players. An U18 AA this season and won the award as WA's best player at the carnival.

Jacob Allison - Pick 39
My other live draft trade didn't go exactly as planned. The main target I had thought of trading back into the draft for was gone before I approached Drew for his pick but there were two other smokies that I was particularly interested in. Once I secured the pick I arranged my draft rankings and intended to set it to auto select, and that's when I saw Allison's name. Yet another U18 AA from 2015 in his under age year Allison was widely touted to go top 5 in the draft. He didn't hit the heights of his 2015 though and slid down the order. His U18 champ stats are well down but he averaged 16 touches, 5 marks and 5.7 tackles. He's 194 cm and a player very much in the Patrick Cripps mould I expect he'll get plenty of opportunity at the Lions. The main reason I changed my mind here and took Allison ahead of my other targets was an interview I found with him. In it he says he regrets he didn't take his 2016 preseason seriously which impacted on his performance. I'm hopeful that in a professional AFL environment he turns things around and becomes the top 5 player to which his 2015 season alluded. High risk and hopefully a high reward selection.

Haha.. I've said to a couple teams this and last season that the only way to properly approach a rebuild is to pick a draft and load up in it. One of a few ways to actually improve relative to the other teams in the league. We're all fairly likely to average one A grader out of each draft. Loading up means you might take two.. or three etc.. I look forward to hopefully fielding a best 22 midfield in the future that consists of: McCluggage, Brodie, Parfitt, Fisher and Allison ;)

I guess in comparison for me was that I took over a poorly-drafted team and traded out the stars, stayed low and then snuck through last season when I really didn't deserve it (or ready for it). Going for a lot of talent like Grundy, Parish, key forwards in Hogan, Patton, McCartin, etc has helped. It's really my defence and midfield that needs work from here.

Without thinking about it too hard, there are probably four different categories a Dynasty League squad can fit under.

Challenging: A legitimate chance to win a flag. Can confidently expect to go into every game a great chance to get the points.

Building: Anything can happen in finals, but not a realistic chance. Confident in most games, apart from the legitinate challengers. Squad is improving though and expect to be better next year than now on player development alone.

Developing: Not expecting to make finals and not really confident of winning most weeks, but have some great young players and plenty of potential for future seasons.

Rebuilding: The squad is coming down the other side of the hill (hopefully after planting a flag on top of it!). Squad is generally aging and in need of a revamp to be able to be a legitimate contender again, but is still a serious threat most weeks.

What category to you think your team best fits under? I think the Warriors are in the second category - "building".

I might be able to do a flaps and pinch a flag, but I think the likes of yourself, richcogs and Drew23 will still have my measure

I'm well off the pace. Naitanui out is a huge blow and not having Lycett back either (and then coming back without match fitness) puts an end to my aspirations for this season. I will get smashed in some of the early rounds.. but I suspect most teams would in any given round if you took out their two best rucks.
