I'm well off the pace. Naitanui out is a huge blow and not having Lycett back either (and then coming back without match fitness) puts an end to my aspirations for this season. I will get smashed in some of the early rounds.. but I suspect most teams would in any given round if you took out their two best rucks.
You will have one if not both back for finals, which is when it will matter. Playing a ruck down, or having a poor substitute for the home and away games is not going to be the difference between you making finals or not.

I also expect you to trade for a pretty good option early in the season, you are the trade ninja afterall :thumbsu:

I think you're over valuing rucks lol. When I made and lost the grand final I played with a ruck donut for the second half of the season. And rucks is not what cost me a flag. Dropping Chaplin was.

Lol

I hope you're right. I think there's other factors at play too. Dual position updates for 2017 have been kinder to some than others. I'd be happy if my list found a way to challenge still, I'm still holding Kelly, Shaw, Picken etc.. for the time being so it's not a full rebuild. If I feel I'm absolutely no chance this season then at least one of those 3 is on the trade table.

Naitanui will be gone for the season. Lycett I hope to get back in the second half of the season. I think our league has changed and, for the most part, the gap between the best and worst teams has shrunk so (and we saw this last season) losing a key player.. or two or three, has a much bigger impact on ladder position than it has in the past. Time will tell.

A trade like that had been on the cards but I think it would be naive to trade just with the motivation to challenge in 2017 (otherwise I never should've traded out Ward, Breust, Wallis, Liberatore etc.). I like to think of myself as the draft ninja, I think there's others more worthy of the trade ninja title ;)

I am happy with my draft, bagging Taranto was obvious then I got 2 great defensive options and a third that is the youngest kid drafted with good upside.

Still my team in paper lacks any vision of depth so I don't see myself moving far if at all up the ladder.

Have and will continue to play the slow game knowing my list is due to come into contention within the next 2 if not 3 years if my last 2 drafts hit the mark.

Last year I lost roughead/murphy/watson for the whole season....yet I still count myself unlucky not to have won.

I think that's an indication of the strength of your list in those positions (or other areas carrying the load). Last season I had similar depth, in any given round I had all of Picken, Hanley and Newnes on the bench. Couldn't fit them in.

If you'd lost Goldstein and Leuenberger last season could you say the same though?

It'll be an interesting season as I think I'm still pretty strong generally. If anything my forward line has improved IMO (I think Membrey in for Breust is an improvement, and guys like Billings and Miller look to cover Merrett losing his F status).

Yeah Jack Macrae getting DPP is a real sting in my tail

Yeah. I know... I've not gained any DPP, only lost them (or in Yeo's case he's gone from a B/C to a C/F). When I look at the list of "defenders" that got dual back and mid status when they were pure mids last year the only name that seems to be missing is Hanley. Maybe things will change over the season but relative to some of the stronger sides (and I include yours here) my list has deteriorated by position and overall depth (with injuries and me trading out established players). I don't think I'm any chance for a top 4 finish and if things go particularly poorly for me then I'll see myself replaced in the top 8 too.

I think you're being far too critical of your side. Everyone knows you've got one of the better prospective lists in the whole league.

I like my list, don't get me wrong.. I just think that no Naitanui and no Lycett means no chance. Lycett looks like he might be getting some time in the JLT though so watch this space ;)

Lycett will be right sooner rather than later, but i think we all knew that ;)

I didn't. I expected him to be out until after the bye rounds. I based that on the injury and the recruiting the Eagles did during the offseason for ruck options. If you saw some of the offers I'd been making for rucks you'd know I hadn't expected him back anytime soon ;)

A hope he goes well in his WAFL practice match, he is a very good player that deserves a run as the main ruck for WCE while NicNat is out.

I'm assuming they're doing it as a fitness test against (in theory) an easier opponent in a match situation.

I think 4 or 5 losses was the cut-off for a top 4 spot last season in our league.. I can't remember what the benchmark was for a top 8 spot. I realise it's not vital to finish top 4 to challenge but it helps. If I lose a few early games I think it'll be a big ask for a top 4 finish so the sooner Lycett is back and playing the better.

I feel like wellingham will be one of the best backs this year. Seems to be playing about 80% midfield. Disposals in the jlt of 24 28 31

Wow, I wasn't aware that Wellingham was a back. They're very solid scores even for a mid. Montagna getting B status I thought was huge for you. Couple both of them with Tuohy playing a more fantasy friendly game at Geelong and you should see your backs post some big scores this season.

with those backline players it is a pity that Drew23's rucks and mids are substandard, otherwise he could probably challenge.. :p

Agreed.

tenderwarrior can you please update the future picks?

Basically im hedging my bets on Nankervis here. He has shown some good signs in the JLT and I think he will be a player. The question is can he be as good as Nicholls as shown himself to be? Does Harwick keep faith in the lid or will Maric/Hampson get games as the season rolls on?

On the flip side, Nankervis is playing and while Nicholls sits in rehab. Hopefully Nicholls is back sooner rather than later but who knows where he ends up. The Dogs made a play and might again.

This was not an easy deal to get done. We both feel like winners losers here because there are so many question marks on these two players.

I lose a paying ruckman and roll the dice on an injured one but the pick upgrade helps ease that a little. Given Nicholls is only mid 20s and should be back this year, Im confident that the 2017 season and draft haul will put me in a really good spot moving forward.

From my perspective I was still looking for a #1 ruck that could contribute this season. Nankervis wasn't on my radar initially but with Hampson being put on the LTI list he entered the equation. It appears Nicholls is behind Witts at the moment at the Gold Coast. He's recovering from an ankle injury and warrants being a sides #1 ruck. Neither of us expect him to remain at the GC next season if he hasn't gone past Witts during the season at which point LWP should cash in (if he ends up a Blue, Lion or Docker especially).

There are questions over Nankervis but I'm hoping with the opportunity and at his age that he grows into a long term #1 ruck. Will hopefully keep me in the hunt this season and become a player I can utilise in my best 22 going forward. I was always planning on trading next seasons 1st round pick but expected I'd do it during the off season. If Nankervis can continue to improve as he has been then I won't even notice the missing first rounder next season :)

No surprises here! Nankervis I feel will be a gun, I am quite bullish on him.

It's a nice trade. I'm actually a little jealous i didn't jump at Richo's boy from Georgetown earlier.

As a tigers fan, i can guarantee you he will play ahead of Maric and likely ahead of Megan Gale's man for the meantime. The only player that can steal hitouts from him is Ben Griffiths or the unlikely Mabior Chol.
