Training 2017 Preseason

Was reading an article from Feb 16 about Robinson being captain for a pre season game. Simon Black was asked if he could ever see Mitch become captain. He said 'probably not' followed by some complements. Do you think the players and or coaches would ever actually select him? I think he would deserve the captaincy as much as anyone even if its only his 3rd year for the club. I just can't see a player vote going his way.

our last training session was the 21st of december so nothing happening since then, if you go back a few more pages you will avoid the inevitable minor View attachment 323256 issues during this bleak period for BF. if you want the short version the king is flying.
Thanks for that.

PS I went back to p35 after your reply (circa 5 Dec) and there was bugger all about training or McC. But I did learn a bit about Michael v Merrett and using your non preferred.

i don't think the club would see Mitch as an option for the captaincy, the main reason being that his off filed/non training field stuff would not be what the club would be looking for IMO eg. media/corporate responsibilities. absolute lock though for the leadership group, i'm pretty certain we will go with one of Dayne Beams or Dayne Zorko.

BTW happy new year to everyone out there, here's hoping for a lot more competitive lions side in 2017.

IIRC, the players vote for the leadership group and then the leadership group and coaches vote for a captain. I assume the CEO also has a say and possibly the board too. I think there's little doubt Robbo will get into the leadership group so, from there, the views of the broader playing group don't formally count in deciding the captain.

Having said that, I agree with Jason pm that it is likely a choice in two between the Daynes.

I've never seen a bigger shit show then this off season. The blatant favouritism being shown here is gross, no one else would get away with the blatant attacks against fellow posters.I understand it's off season but the thread derailments are way worse than any other off season I've been a part of.

The in group power trip we have on this board is getting ridiculous.
What, in all your 2 whole years? Surely not.

Look I'm gonna be honest I don't ever remember it being this bad in the off-seasons I've been around for. I can understand why some people are getting a bit frustrated. I will admit that it is starting to get a little tiresome clicking on the thread hoping to see something new about pre-season but instead getting absolutely nothing.

Does anyone know when training starts again?

Beams and Zorko would be ahead of him.

Mitch has been terrific and quite a rags to riches story but we might have to be careful about adding too much to his plate and blowing the whole thing.

Beams will get it, and hand over to Andrews in a few years.

As I've pondered before, just what pre-season training news do people expect to find between Xmas & New Year?
People need to lighten up. In fact, it seems to be mostly the guys always telling others to "lighten up" that seem stressed about some chatter.
There is no training news.

I believe they r back into it as of the 9th.
So another week of nothingness.[/QUOTE]
Keen to see if they've maintained the standards over the holidays!!

Yeah, but if crap posted but it's a public forum so who cares.
I thought they were back training on the 5th? May be wrong.
Don't think there will be any surprises re captain for this year. The two main names thrown around seem to be pretty spot on. Most likely capt and Vc.
Boys broke off into groups of 5 or 6 to talk about and then cast votes from 5 down to 1 to put a leadership Group together.
There were categories to vote on (don't quote me in the exact categories as I can't remember them exactly)

Such as:
Most trustworthy
Best on field leader
Off field leader
Brings positive culture
Who is admired and looked up to (football sense)

That type of thing.
Not going to repeat votes but a lot of you would be very surprised with some of the outcomes.
What it showed to me is that what we sometimes think we know about what is happening inside the club relationally is not always correct. I'm talking from a football side of things not from a mates getting in type of thing as the boys are very close and getting in really well.
There is a dramatic (huge) change in feeling, belonging and value type environment at the club. It seems like a significant congealing of players with management, management with staff and staff with players. A change that has made players really wanting to be around the club. Not just say that to appease the media.
Like everyone, how that equates to on field performance from the outset is too hard to guess this far out.
Healthy list (nearly all) and solid coaching and leadership can only hold this season in good stead for mine.
Been a real focus on being clean on both sides by hand and foot (Nicks left has improved greatly) as well as strength and conditioning plans to build individuals to suit their specific roles.

Great post as usual Robbo18!

Thank you for these insights!

Did the players vote in their groups or did each player vote individually?

best pre season report since the 21st of december at least R18.:thumbsu::)

still going with Dayne Beams as captain with a leadership group of Dayne Zorko, Allen Christensen, Tom Rockliff, Mitch Robinson to back him up. hope they also go with a young leaders group as well eg. Nick Robertson (not pissing in your pocket R18, it is obvious to me that Nick would make a great leader, just needs to establish himself in the best 22), Harris Andrews, Tom Cutler, Rhys Matheison, Darcy Gardner (channel that aggression in the correct manner ah la Mitch Robinson and could be a great leader IMO).

Great post as usual Robbo18!

Did the players vote in their groups or did each player vote individually?
Discussed amongst each other but still individually voted
Some good chats and players gave examples for the reason behind their vote
Seemed a good system to me.
Possibly driven by someone with a teaching background . Lol lol!!

Disagree with this line of thinking. I'm a big believer that people rise to the occasion when given responsibility. We have the leadership consultants coming in and I am sure they will be all over this type of stuff.

Would love to see Andrews as a vice captain, too.

I think there are countless examples in many spheres of good people being elevated above their skillset or coping ability.

I see a danger in giving leadership positions to players before they're ready. Often leadership ability goes hand in hand with experience. 2-3 years is still too little experience I think. Let him settle in, play good footy, get to a point where he can consistently dominate in his position, and then add more strings to his bow.
