Just saw that stingray photo... fmd! I wouldn't be smiling and updating instagram - I'd want some painkillers and booze, stat! Are the smiles/tweets just a case of putting on a brave face? I'm not sure what longer term damage having a barb go through your foot would do.

Well, what is everyone's definition of improvement/pass mark for this season.
Seasons past (that I've been around) we've talked player retention, 5-8 wins, finance bounce backs, acquiring our own facility etc etc.
I'm not saying there is a right or wrong answer because from a supporters point of view this is very subjective. From a coaching perspective, the things they look for to gauge improvement may not immediately equate to wins. And that is the frustration for supporters and "can" affect gate takings.
In light of the above my take is:

-greater respect/coverage from the AFL community (becoming a relevant contender)
-8 wins and pushing further into games against the best teams
-strong on field leadership
-a fit and relatively injury free list
-a break even fiscal report

It's going to have to be a "know it when I see it" thing for me.

I can't set a wins/loss benchmark for us at this stage but clearly the weekly blowouts have to stop.

Obviously I need to see something resembling an AFL standard approach to defending, and that goes for the whole team not just the back six.

I want to see our 2-5 year players continue their development trajectories and not stagnate.

I want to see players have sustained periods of impacting in their position over weeks to months instead of saying "well player X looked pretty promising on a wing this week".

That's a pretty good set of targets, Robbo. Not crazy blue sky stuff, but not giving up either.

The wins column will be always be such a lottery with a young side where a single good win can define the next 6 weeks - and the same for a bad loss. GWS, Hawks, Swans, Dogs all had bad losses. How bad wad Hawthorn in that GWS game? But they are able to lock it off and move on. That's tougher for us.

Yeah, that's where I get the "pushing deeper into games" against the better teams. The thing with pre season optimism is that if it's not kept in check relatively speaking, it can easily turn into disappointment due to "our" level of expectation.

Agree with the last few posts. I'd like to see a number of players settle into their best positions instead of seeming to jump around the field from week to week. Clear signs of increased confidence, such as a team that doesn't drop their heads as soon as 2 goals in the trot are kicked against us.

My take (from what I've been told) is that this is exactly the plan. To try and settle the team in relation to the playing groups most productive positions.
Individual conditioning routines seem to reflect this as well.

As always, thanks Robbo18! For your great insight. It makes me so happy to hear the guys are really feeling a proper sense of belonging at the club. For me this is one of the biggest things I put on the 2017 Lions bucket list.

I think any team in any given year is capable of at least 6-8 wins, so win wise that is my min target for us. I really want to see our 3-5 players who have been given the "potential" tag break out and cement their spot on our list. The good thing is I am confident in the likes of McStay, Cutler etc doing so.

If we can do the above, I believe we'll be giving ourselves a huge chance at 8-12 wins in 2018 and finals at 2019.

We may finish last, hope not though.
I think and hope this year our younger players will back themselves, make some mistakes, learn from those mistakes and then back themselves again. The last thing we want is for our younger players that have the ability to take the game on but don't, and go into their shells because of fear of reprisal.
The more we do this (back ourself) the more confident we will be, the cockier we will be and who knows.
Don't rain in youthful exuberance, channel it in the correct direction. That type of confidence is contagious and is hard to counter.

No floggings for mine, hated watching games and at quarter time knowing it was all over.

I will be shattered if we finish 17/18 this year. That would mean no improvement whatsoever.

I really feel we will be around the 10 - 14 and surprise quite a few so called experts who think we have no talent.

I don't have that air of excitement like normal, just a realistic feeling of a better year and the tide turning.

We're likely going to be younger and less experienced in 2017 than we were in 2016. Not sure the scoreboard will be kind but other less obvious indicators will be pleasing if we are doing the right things.

Reckon we'll have to judge 2017 based on a Dennis Denuto "vibe of the thing" gut feeling.

I have resigned to that fact that we will very likely be bottom 2 next year and maybe bottom 4 in 2 years time... however I also believe this is probably needed and we will definitely come out a lot stronger in the end with 3-4 drafts of absolute elite talent intake + a major focus on development of our young talent with the introduction of very highly rated youth coaches the past 2 off seasons. We should be pushing top 4 in about 5 years IMO but because we have a list that is relatively the same age we also should have a 5-6 year premiership window at the very least.

I want to see individual improvement next year but what I really want to see is a whole team improvement. I want to see the blokes gut run for each other and to put their bodies on the line for each other. This is where I think we can see the most rapid improvement next year.

For the Lions to be one club again, all, staff, members, supporters and players all pushing in one direction again.

80 percentage cause it means we are in games to the end and Team has values that they clearly stand for.

I really couldn't care if we don't win a game but I want to see us play as a team again, a club united and with direction. It has been a tough few years for all, players, coaches staff and us. The wins will come but everyone needs to be on board with the direction. I actually believe it's happening.

I am so excited about this season I am really struggling to keep my lid on and I reckon we will finish bottom 4. God help my poor partner next year when we push for finals, 2019 when it will be top 4 and then when this mountain is climbed in 2020.

Ok lid back on for now...

Will be interesting to see how it all unfolds. As long as we don't get any more injuries than normal, keep away from stingrays etc, we should improve imo.
