Don't think that guarantees them a spot though. In fact if they don't solidify a spot next year I imagine they'll spend 2018 in the reserves (and possibly much of 2017). I've got Bewick in my 22 currently but that's more because we don't have a dedicated small forward and I think he's probably the best fit we have for that role.
Admittedly, I am basing much of that of the skill set he's shown playing as a medium marking forward/HFF and one NAB cup game against the Pies a few years ago where he channeled Eddie Betts playing as a small forward. If he can play like he that for a year he's virtually guaranteed an extension on his existing contract but probably a longshot.

I like Lester but I'm not sure where he fits into our side currently.
He can run through the midfield and can certainly have an impact at stoppages but doesn't offer much once the ball clears in either direction.
He can play as a third tall and kick a bag but he doesn't do it frequently enough.
He can play as an undersized key defender, and has had a few impressive games in that role but we haven't seen it too much over his career as he generally hasn't spent much time in defense. Seems to suffer from being a jack of all trades but master of none. I'm curious to see where he plays and with which group he spends his pre-season.
His continuity has been ruined by injury to some degree as it seems as if whenever he's managed to get some form going in a role he gets an injury but unless he establishes himself soon it will be hard to get back into the 22.

Maybe not but while we don't have any other small, quick lockdown defenders we have to look to continue to develop him in that role.

It's not a bad problem to have. They either develop and stay in the team or they get overtaken by the kids.

There was talk of delisting at the end of next year,my point was this won't happen.FWIW both of them have to get more consistent which hopefully might happen in a better organised team.

Yep. Can't discount the added pressure on everyone in the last couple of years, with the youth in and star power out or out of form. Neither Bewick or Lester will be stars, but both can be better than serviceable in as you say, a more organised or better performing team.
Most teams (even Premiership sides) have some pretty average players filling gaps or playing roles. Should we aspire to have better players? Yes, of course. But it may be unrealistic to expect to have 25 better players than these 2 at any given time. I think they can both be underrated sometimes.

Only restriction on Hipwood playing is that Schache, Close, him, and a chopout ruck is a pretty tall forwardline. Especially with McStay maybe migrating forward as well. All pretty young though, so we might alternate a bit to manage them.

Archie I think right now is most of the way to being a second first ruck. Behind Stef for first ruck, and Walker adds more as a forward. So Archie plays when Stef doesn't, with Walker to chopout generally.

I take it you are having a lend, when you refer to Lester running the ball, I have yet to see him actually run anywhere.

There are more than enough young players who can be rotated through ahead of those guys,and who can repay the investment.

Maybe, but they're not going to be better, necessarily. Experience & maturity still holds some value, and like Lace Out, I'm not talking strictly best 22, but saying that delisting is probably a little way off.

I think most people are just keeping their expectation of the draftees relatively low. He's well built and had impressive combine results, no reason why he can't be pushing for early selection.

Archie had a couple of good games last year but correct me if im wrong but I seemed to recall they were against non-rucks like Trengrove from port. I wouldnt lock him into Lions best team just yet

Archie's games were against Port with Trengrove, Adelaide without Jacobs playing and Carlton with Kreuzer.

Even thou it won't be the best team balance at different stages, I think Archie needs to be given a decent run this year. Our Ruck stocks consists of a 30 y.o, a promoted Rookie, a rookie draftee and a game show winner, we need to find out where we stand with him to potentially fill any voids.

I think a few people rule out Walker because they think he's too old but he only just turned 24. He still has a lot of improvement left in him and you can't really judge anyone too harshly based off last year given how pathetic the entire team was. Doesn't have the potential of Schache, Hipwood and McStay but he can do the dirty work while they develop.
