Can't see Spencer splitting time with Gawn. When you have an asset like him you're not going to diminish his output. Spencer did ok in meaningless JLT games but it's a different story when the real stuff starts.

You have Goodwin a first time senior coach so it's now his head on the chopping block. He needs results so you'd think he will play his best team and not tinker with it. Just think what would happen if Spencer played taking Gawn's rucking time and the losses came. The demon fans and the media would be in uproar. What does Goodwin do then? Revert back, then the question of course is why did he not start like that which would lead people to query his level of competence. I'd be very surprised if he's got the balls to go down that road. Maybe a senior experienced coach who has had success could get away with it but not a new one.

For me, paraphrasing a well known saying, it's "All the way with Gawnstein".

strong analysis....lets see if round 1 teams say a diff story.

I agree with Thepa Cingman

Ok all so here is the scenario......Spencer is named round 1 along with Gawn.

What do?

I can't see them playing Spencer v the Saints, Hickey 1 out, Carlisle to cover Spencer one out, they lose too much in defensive pressure.

Round 2 on the other hand.......

Nice story. Not based on much evidence though - basically it's your ideal fantasy.

Reality may be different. Goodwin may decide the key to September success is to not burn Gawn out in the first half of the season. Spencer might play some games and not others depending on the opposition and ground conditions.

I'd be hopeful Gawn rucks alone but suggest you get a plan B ready just in case.

We have 3 obvious options.

Lock away Gawn and Goldy/Gruny/Mummy etc

Go Gawn and Sandi possibly with cover at F4

Go balls out with Sandi with Witts/Nankers etc
I'm putting my balls on the line!

I totally agree and think Gawn should go it alone. You get too easily exposed playing 2 genuine rucks. Saying that though Goodwin will be impressed with Spencer in JLT. I was very confident Spencer wouldn't play round 1 but now not so sure. If Spencer's picked Gawn is out of my side.

I get the that Witts is cheap but I can't see him being r1 or r2 worthy. Scored 85 against dogs who had no recognised ruck. Although I'm unsure of his TOG%.

85 for a 200k rookie is a 230k win

Thats handy

Put it this way, Bulldogs were pretty much impossible for rucks to score against last season. So I'm looking it as a positive.

Probably the Bont stealing them all!

Witts on the bench anyone??
possibly.
although spending $217k on a player that hopefully wont ever get on the field seems a bit rich. especially when rookies are looking thin in other areas and guys like Marchbank, Turner and WHE may be necessary.

Yeah, just an expensive insurance option. Then the fwd line can be filled with midfielders rather than speculative RFs.

but i like speculative RF's.
im definitely going with Nank and may even be tempted into Lycett if he can get up for round one.
most of the midfield type forward options suck.
