2018 Best 22

Can you believe how lucky we are being Hawk fans? I count my blessings that over 30 years ago my older brother won me over with a Hawk mascot as a little kid.

We now are punching with the big boys again after injuries, player movements and poor form had us in deep trouble and the flogs that are against us celebrating our decline, which is now over!

The question now is, with so much young talent unearthed as a result of having to play the youngsters, who is in our best 22 next year when the established players can return.
Especially defence, with Hodge retiring , we have one spot free and I assume Gibson will retire so that is 2 spots to fill.
We have youngsters all over the park I want to continue to get games into but some serious class ready to come back in. I hope Brand can remain as he is a very tall player which we have lacked in defence since I can remember. Burton is a lock to be best 22.

Who do people think will be in out best team lineup next year?

Yeah i was thinking about that this morning too ... will bringing back the older guys change/ affect the chemistry/spirit/excitement of the team we have at the moment ... cyril and birch would be great inclusions but what of the rest? ... could we use some of em to gain trade currency?

Unfortunately for Cegs, TV, etc, teams now play only one ruckman and McEvoy thrives in that role.

Shoe has been better than TOB since his return and stays in.
Poppy has had his day.
Langers in if Burgoyne retires.

I'm dreaming but I'd love to see Roughy spend a full season in the guts resting forward and our resurgence post-bye has due to this move (among many others). I think he absolutely excels in that role. Play a mobile forward line and throw him in there for 5 or 6 minutes a quarter to wreak havoc.

O'Rourke and Lovell are both still out of contract at seasons end. With their injury history no idea what the club will do with those two. I would like to see the club give O'Rourke a one year deal.

O'Brien is also out of contract and maybe traded.

Henderson has done better then expected and might get a new contract extension.

There are a lot of players that could come into the starting 22 from the weekend.

Birchall, Cousins, Ceglar, Frawley, Lovell, O'Meara, O'Rourke, Puopolo, Rioli and Stratton.

Cousins and Lovell need a few more VFL games imo. I can't give Ceglar a spot at the moment with the way McEvoy is playing. O'Rourke may be gone at the end of the year, unless we re-take him as a rookie.

That said, I'd say out best 22 at this stage would look something like this:

some sides have 3 changes to our back 6 even 4 this is crazy, this has been our strength since the bye rounds. with elite users of the footy (gunston sicily burton) and 3 providing run with hardwick.
no more turnovers.
having frawley, stratts, brand together. provides less of both interesting problem.

hardwick,sicily,burton, are locks for mine in defence.
im even tempted to leave gunston back there he has been elite.

A few points.
a) Not sure we need 2 ruckmen in the team If McEvoy can keep up his form I think we go with one ruckman. Two in the team slows down our forward half and we need good defensive pressure in fwd half.
b) I prefer O'Brien over Shoenmakers as he is a better mark and more upside and can pinch hit in the ruck. Hopefully he takes his game to another level next year, this will help us dramatically in our push up the ladder, if not I think we go all out for Gold Coasts Tom Lynch next year.
c) I hope JOR can get his injury issues sorted out over the preseason along with Lovell and not sure about Vickery, i think his papers might be stamped.
