I'm going to have to respectively (and probably biasedly) disagree.

Nyhuis only ever was pulling him down – Gray tries to stand up and break the tackle which caused the “hop and slam” motion. Nyhuis was horizontal and couldn't have possibly lifted him up with any malice (unlike the "dirty dog" he was made out to be). Unlucky string of circumstances and if Gray dropped to his knees it would have been a perfect tackle.

I would have been happy with 2 based on result, which is what the AFL is trying to stamp out. But I honestly don't know if Nyhuis could have done anything different, as far as he was concerned Gray still had the ball and was pulling him to ground still. Possibly try and force him to fall the other way onto his free arm but these are split second decisions and probably no time to react in these situations.
You’re absolutely entitled to your opinion. I think JDavey summed it up perfectly following your post. My view wouldn’t change if it were a Collingwood player who did that. It was excessive and unnecessary. There was absolutely no reason for Nyhus to sweep the leg and dump him like he did.

Still dont like it as it opens a can of worms.
What about the players of the pre 90s
Do they get millions in compensation as they were paid peanuts to play?

If they head down this road eventually the tackle dies. The bump is already mostly dead.
Wont be long until Jeremy Howe knocks someone out taking a hanger on their head and that will get banned too.

What we are left with is nothing but touch footy.

These guys like you and me are paid to do a job. Footy players suffer all kinds of life long effects from playing the game. That's why they get compensated for their time and their efforts.
Ive got health issues from my work. Its all part of it IMO. No one forcing them to get on the field and they have the right like a mouthguard to wear headgear for protection.

All moving a little to fast for my liking.

its an impossible debate. Its truth that if people played tennis instead of footy there would be less concussion related long term damage. But that would be a sadder world. Is it even possible to adequately compensate a pro athlete for long term damage- Most players are fine, some players lives are totally wrecked(and you cant fix a wrecked life with money)
Ideally you would place an onus of responsibility on the players entering the sport to decide if they can accept possible long term consequences, but again the truth is they choose to play as dumb kids and often dont start understanding the consequences till well into their carreer.
Its a tough one
And i only have one trade left.
on the plus side my opp next week has NN/Sic and Hibbs with weak cover, so sucks to be him.

With all due respect Hutt this is such rubbish. Nyhuis puts his leg in front of Gray's which is what causes Gray to "hop" because it completely unbalances him as Nyhuis drives.

I'd say this happened because Nyhuis is trying to put him over the boundary line, Nyhuis could've executed a safe tackle by dragging him to the ground (by dropping to his knees in the first SS below) or not tripping Gray, instead he stepped over his body and drove him into the ground.

I also don't buy the argument that 'Nyhuis was horizontal and couldn't possibly have lifted him up" - You'll see the progression from Shot 1 to Shot 2 to Shot 3 that Nyhuis starts low with his arms and legs and finishes upright before going horizontal, initially hes putting momentum upwards while tripping which is what causes Gray to go up and over in a sling motion. FWIW I don't think Nyhuis intended to hurt him, but just made a bad choice and combined it with some poor execution.

Nyhuis is not a judo master. The leg thing happened but has to be accidental and hard to anticipate. He did go hard as he was outclassed in the 1v1 but did not see any malice.

I think the real problem is he pinned both arms. No realistic way for Gray to break his own fall. We've seen it all year, I can see a rule change coming where you can only pin the arm closest to you. There is no strategic benefit to pinning both anyway.
