Don’t want to start another Longer vs Hickey debate.. But Longer is very competitive at rucking contest.. what is lacking is his marking/gathering possessions around the ground.. opposite to Hickey. So if it’s clearance/rucking contest we’re trying to improve on, then Longer is good. He needs to improve his touch, running and marking. He seem to be a laid back guy, so having proper coaching from Brendon Lade and increase in professionalism/training around the club will no doubt help him.

Yeah he was super competitive in the ruck against Ryder in 17, cost us a finals spot.

Or you can play Marshall against the Dees so when Gawn goes back Marshall can go with him. Or if Gawn pushes forward then he can follow him there too. Too much is made of the actual ruck contest when in reality it’s on our midfield to win that.

I'd almost concede the ruck and just look to compete more around the ground.

Look at the jobs West Coast did in the finals this year.

I think about the game against Footscray when Hickey hurt his hammy and we had no one in the ruck, ot Acres jumped in there for a bit, and the Dogs were able to hit to whoever they wanted and they changed the momentum of the game. I felt for that 8-10 minute period (it felt like 10 years) showed why you need someone that could actually ruck.

It will be interesting to see what level Bruce gets back to once fit again, he's played in the ruck, played back and forward, so we could have Longer, RoMa and Bruce rucking, Billy in the middle to help build a defensive wall and RoMa and Bruce and move forward or back, or you could drop Billy and bring in another midfielder?

Do you think the Saints might sign a delisted free agent to help fill a list spot?

Who knows? IIRC we have 34 on the senior list pending Longer re-signing. If Pierce pens a deal and gets moved to the senior list, and/or Roma does too, then it’s 36 and we have up to 4 spots to fill as well as 2 on the rookie list. They may both stay on the rookie list though, which would mean we have 6 spots left.

We have picks 4, 36, 46, 67 and 79. You’d think we use the first three at least.

I agree unless we're getting absolutely pantsed in the ruck it can be managed

Our midfield is much more completive when we have a ruckman who can actually win a hitout. And no playing a ruck who is competitive at centre bounce means they would need to be an absolute star around the ground, which none of our ruckman are, so the wouldn't gain anything by playing them for their 'around the ground' work ahead of Billy.

Plus, it is no coincidence they perform much stronger when Billy is playing than when Hickey is playing.

billy does not seem to have the drive ro succeed. once in 2017 he got himself fit and showed a bit .the rest of his career he coasts and hides behind small niggles

i too hope he has a massive pre season but expect him to miss a week here or there with some niggle between the ears

Didn't Billy have a really nasty concussion last year that wrecked his season? And a shoulder reco prior to that?

I think it was 2016 that he had a really strong finish to the season as he was fit and injury free.

in that game Blake also was hurt so it was total desperation time by putting him in there ... i think at one point Steele contested a ruck contest in that game ... in the end we had to plunk poor Hickey in the forward line just so we could give the boys a rest on the bench ...

Gawn was +13 for hitouts, +2 for clearances and +10 for contested possessions. I wouldn't say Billy broke even in the middle

I was overseas and missed the game, only reading on here about how horrible Billy was. When I watched the replay I was surprised to see how competitive Billy was. He certainly didn't let Max give the Melbourne midfield the armchair ride your stats suggest.

How many of those hitouts resulted in a Melbourne clearance? Are all of those stats based in the centre square or around the ground?

maybe with all the ruck issues we go back to the GT era and just not run with one ... Jason Blake contested the rucks but it was more an extra midfielder and designated taller guy for us ..

Carlisle rucked for a bit as well, but then we needed him in the forward line because Battle was off injured and then we needed him back because the dogs kept scoring. A complete disaster all around.

Which is why the Eagles traded for Hickey, because they've been taught by Mitchell how to play to a losing ruckman, so where does that leave us, can Ratts teach our mids how to play to any ruckman? Maybe Alabakis gets a game early next year, plays 50% game time with Marshall, because he can't be worse than Billy around the ground and @211cm he'll get just more hands on the ball in the ruck contest, it will be a willing preseason with plenty of intent at the match sim.

Damn, i thought moving him forward was a strategic masterpiece.

Do you seriously believe that someone who doesn't actually play football, in Alabakis, is a better option that Longer, who despite not contributing much around the ground has shown he can compete in the ruck regularly at an AFL level?
