2nds 2018 Suns Reserves and NEAFL

We have them - in overage Academy players - eg Foster, Boakye , Bowie etc..
Yeah, those guys are fine, but when we have to start delving into the 16 and 17 year olds like Josh Gore, Connor Budarick, Kane Haua, Cooper Portelli, Dean Katsiris, Jack Wingrave, Josh Molloy, Riley Buckland etc, I don't believe it truly helps guys like Scrimshaw, Powell, Crossley, Dawson and co to develop. If we had, for instance, Jake Spencer and/or Andrew Swallow as top-up players - remember, Evans decided not to activate the 46th list spot - how good would it be to have a NEAFL "captain" who could mentor the kids and play to a high standard. The kids should be playing in their own comps, but we don't appear to have any such infrastructure. I hate seeing teenagers blooded too early because I think we've seen at the Suns how it can destroy a kid's desire to play footy.

Hope you are not saying any of those you mentioned can't be good players for Suns in the future...
I sat next to young Josh Gore on the plane back from Sydney last night - he was pumped to be playing at NEAFL level as an underage Academy player.
I saw his match he kicked a goal and did OK and was a Queensland U16 rep last year. Players his age need to be exposed at his age to be drafted.
That said - I see your point about impact on senior player development (refer previous post).
Would also like to see a senior player like Rischa or Rosa take on a permanent on field NEAFL leadership role next year.

To be honest I will ask them to try out for Redland or Southport if they are not selected in the draft ,go to SANFL to play for Reserve team .

They keep Academy players for an overage year because;
a) they've played NEAFL before - and usually with the same players - including draftees and rookies.
b) they still have a chance of being selected for Q18s as an overager and from there the u18s champs and the draft.
c) some players need another year to develop to gain confidence to be selected as a (b) above
After that - they move on to Southport or whoever knowing their future draft chances are minimal at best.

I am not saying he is spud (hua ) but clearly you can see he is lost vs GWS , structure and Etc , poor kids I hope this match will not totally destroy him .

If it was just Gore or another bottom ager playing off the bench, that's good player management. The NEAFL team that was held goalless had far too many young players and I think you'd agree that being flogged by a near-AFL strength Lions2 side didn't do much for their collective or individual development.
As for Foster, Boakye, Bowie, Arnold, Baru and any other top-agers, they should be playing NEAFL as much as possible because this is the final opportunity for them to be drafted. Most won't be, but that isn't reason not to play them. Josh Jaska was rookie-listed because he was a top-ager and the signs are there that he will debut later this year aged 20. If it weren't for some injury niggles, I say Jaska would have been picked already, such is his poise in the backline from NEAFL games I've seen so far.

Some guys bloom later than others and even then you aren't going to see much great footy before any guy's 21st. Of course there are exceptions, which Cam Rayner has shown this year and several clubs are able to get immediate impact out of a noob. Sydney continually produces rookies through the methods we are using and I don't give a stuff about the crapshoot Draft if we keep rookie-listing talent like Joyce, Spencer, Heron and Dawson who seem much more AFL ready than outside Draft picks. The quirk that allows undrafted Academy players to have a 2nd go at the Draft through the Academy is one I hope we continue to exploit - no problems with them topping up the NEAFL team as long as it benefits the club and culture because you'd much rather build a team from locals than have to forge a group from all over the place to automatically adapt and assimilate.

I still don't understand why don't/can't players retain some formerly listed players for the NEAFL side
Something similar to how WCE/East Perth would make more sense. Current East Perth captain is Patrick McGinnity a former WCE player, and they also have Sharrod Wellingham and Will Maginness.

If we had for example Andrew Boston, Seb Tape and Ryan Davis in the twos each week as the first selected there'd still be room for academy players but there would be a much better/stable foundation to actually build some structures. additionally as former Gold Coast players they should be familiar with the structures etc (under normal course of events, maybe not so much with recent change of coach)
Currently we rely on the players from the senior list that aren't selected for the ones to bring the hardness/structure, but as a rule the number, type and experience of these players fluctuates with the needs and fortunes of the senior team.

Exactly what I'm talking about. But why be restricted there. Why not grab some interstaters. Only need 3-4 and they won't (shouldnt) be restricting the development of the kids.

It seems the Suns want total control over the kids. So rather than let them near the QAFL teams they are aligned with, they play NEAFL even though they are 2 levels below that level.

I dont know if its politics or it's seen as the best way, I assume a mix of both. As Sunraysia pointed out though, I bet the kids are pumped about running around in the NEAFL, even if they have minimal possies.

No, that isn’t what is going on either. Each of the Academy players is contracted by a QAFL club. What is actually happening is that the AFL Injury list is large and the Academy kids have various fixtures of their own.

When the crisis hit against Lions2, the club had to use Eddie Sansbury and a bunch of teenagers in the NEAFL. There has to be a better way

The reserves including the Academy guys are in front of me right now seemingly about to train.
I’m really surprised how many Academy guys are there.
I would have thought they have school or tafe or a job to be at.

Some supposed to play U18 , but due to GC players promoted to AFL and injuries , Graham and Gilmore are playing NEAFL
Are you going to watch U18 Allies vs Vic Metro tommorow at southport at 11 am or NeAfl at 11.30 am?

Greenwool and Powell in the backline ?

Jaska and Nutting up forward ?

Why the frig is the neafl game at 1130am?
Can someone explain that to me please.
So it will finish at say 215pm and then what?
We touch each other for 2hours?
Just ridiculous.
Well I was going to go to the reserves but I won’t be now.
That’s just a joke.
Totally agree Bods I grew up in an era where the reserves finished 15 minutes before the main game ,we would
always be at the ground by half time of the reserves game .
Value for money and good to see the young players in action.
Today totally unfair to our young reserves team to play in front of no people result no atmosphere.
Don't think alternative entertainment attracts many more supporters.
Football people want football action.
If they want other attractions just organise them outside main arena ,people can than choose what they wish to watch.
Cannot see why reserves cant finish 30 minutes before main game particularly here at Metricon.
