2019 Draft

Pick 19 - Sam De Koning 200cm 85kg KPD

Was the 2019 U18 AA full back and would be a great addition to the list as a long term replacement for Astbury.

Pick 38 - Dyson Hilder 196cm 91kg KPD

We've picked a couple of South Australian captains in recent years and while Hilder wasn't their captain he was a vice captain. By adding him along with De Koning we give ourselves a couple of genuine KPD kids to develop.

Pick 39 - Darcy Cassar 184cm 82kg Defender
A high possession accumulator across HB who averaged 23 disposals 5 marks 5 R50s a game for Western Jets this year projects as a potential Houli replacement down the track with his run and carry

Pick 41 - Sam Philp 185cm 80kg Inside Mid
With Graham Ross & RCD we have a nice group of young inside mids and Philp would slot in nicely with them. Averaged 23 disposals 6 clearances & 6 tackles

Pick 56 - Brock Smith 188cm 81kg Defender
First thing I read about him, "Every team needs a reliable defender and leader who will not leave anything out on the park and bleed for the jumper" and the first thing that sprung to mind is this is what Vlastuin and Grimes' son would be if they were able to have children. His testing results will see him available late in the draft and I'd love to swoop at 56.

For mine this would be an ideal result from the draft. 2 young KPDs, a couple of young defenders and another strong inside midfielder to add to the list.

Two KPD in one draft? Have you given up on Miller and Garthwaite?

I'd be good with taking one KPD and then another inside mid. Cool, Balta, Miller, Moore and CCJ currently are in the 2's. Though I except Moore and probably Miller to be delisted, though if we can get 3 picks inside 30 like you're other post I'm all for giving Miller another year injury free to see what he's got.

Edit: Just noticed you have Garth as 'general defender' in that table?

I think we sometimes get wrapped up in our own success and just assume every kid we draft is going to be an AFL regular at some stage.
Miller won't; he is a giant sloth.
Garthwaite is an extremely awkward footballer who I really struggle to see at the next level.
Would love to be wrong on both counts but I reckon it pays to make the call early and cut your losses rather than persist and pour development into unlikely prospects. IMO shoring up our KPD stocks early wouldn't be a bad idea then have a crack at some mids and forwards later.

I'd be keen on Kysaiah Pickett on one of our 38/39/41 picks. Good tackler, tough and has class. With Butler leaving, Aarts not being good enough and our small forwards on the list being tried in different positions (Baker - back, Bolton/Rioli - HF/Wing/Onball, George - HF/Wing). Only worry is crows pick him up at #37.

Pick 46: The Eagles have most bases covered and after landing Tim Kelly, will need to wait until the third round before opening their draft account. But they could try to replace small forward Willie Rioli, who faces a long anti-doping ban, with their draft hand. Kysaiah Pickett, a strong and aggressive small forward who is the nephew of Port Adelaide premiership star Byron, is likely to find a home around this point of the draft. An exciting and eye-catching prospect, particularly with his marking.

I see Garthwaite as more a Grimes type of defender rather than a true KPD, while Miller hasn't exactly filled me with confidence after 2 years, thought he would have shown a bit more by now. Not against delisting & rookie listing him.

Chol & CCJ are both forward/ruck options. Balta is our only other genuine KPD option. Hilder and De Koning are both genuine KPD size with De Koning at 200cm and Hilder at 195cm

No drinking the bath water on my end. I don't think Miller has really shown anything. Only saving grace it's only been two years and he's a big fella.

Garthwaite though looked like a really promising talent in his first few games and gets really good write-ups in the VFL report but got towelled up this year at AFL level. I'm still very hopeful for him.

He did pretty well on Hawkins in his first game, don't think he has the speed on him like Grimes to be that versatile and play on smalls. I only see him being a key defender. Maybe a third tall I guess, could be a Broad replacement rather the an Astbury/Rance replacement.

My feelings exactly. Although if both players are happy to be rookies, I'd like to see them continue in our VFL team.
However, Garthwaite is contracted, so it's Moore who is the 2nd player who could be rookied this year to free up a space.

Had Rance riding shot gun in that game against Hawkins. When I say Grimes replacement, I mean as mid sized defender who can take the oppositions mid sized forwards. Garth is deceptively quick and has the tank to go with the more mobile type of forward.

Not so much to do with Pickett and his ability which he has lots of but it will be interesting to see whether we end up with one of the three eagles boys (other two being Mead and Shoenberg) given Sam Lonergan was the senior coach for the eagles but didn't give any a senior appearance. Despite that you would think he will have been well placed to make a recommendation to our recruiting department.

Similarly we have obviously spent a lot of time watching Oakleigh with Higgins, RCD and Ross coming from their in recents drafts and a player who struggled with injuries and form this season in Dylan Williams may end up falling to our second pick. Which given he was looking like a top five pick before the season based on an outstanding finals series last year it will be interesting to see whether we take the punt on him as he is a potential match winner and has a lot of Nathan Brown about him.

Can't see us taming more than 3 picks in the national draft. I reckon we'll bundle up our picks to try move up the order a bit.
Would sacrifice 19/38/39 for Hawks 11 to have a chance of getting Kemp.

No but i can start one

Balme has been to Cooper Stephens parents house 3 times in the last month
Can confirm.I live next door to the Stephens.Cooper has a poster of Pickett on his wall.
