2019 Draft

We shouldn't see taking the full five minutes as us being not sure who to pick.

They weren't doing much debating during that time were they? I think we were waiting the full five minutes in case a call came in with a trade deal we liked. Nothing to be gained by picking straight away.

I don’t like our strategy of just bidding on anyone’s academy if that’s what they were doing.
It’s odd because I haven’t thought this in years, but it doesn’t feel like we have done enough homework heading to this draft. Since about 2014-2015 to last year, it really felt like we were well researched and prepared but I don’t get that vibe this year.

I say this not because the group of players that we picked up. Rather, it is more to do with the apparent lack of targeted pickups. Some teams like Carlton, Geelong, Gold Coast and Collingwood had that vibe about them this year and we did too in the last couple of years but not this year.

I don’t know, we’ll have to wait and see how our group go before making any judgement, but how they reached their selections this draft doesn’t fill me with confidence like it did in the last few years. I mean, we have three unmatched academy picks on our list. Does it say that we got a bargain, or was there a reason why there was no bid on them? I guess we’ll have to wait and see.
Anything positive from this year?

I think people have to look at things differently than what I’m reading.

1) Why did we take so long to make our selections, shows we are disorganised.

No it shows we are analytical about every pick and want EVERY pick to work out. We go through our system and strategy and make sure we have Richmond men coming into the club.

2) Why do we bid on others academies not enough homework being done.

It shows we analyse every single eligable kid even if they are tied to another club. We only select a certain type of player so our list of who we want is shorter than a lot of other clubs, we do so much work with all regions and put so much work in, it is good that we have been rewarded this year. Three other academy boys who we feel are Richmond men.

From the highlights, I am excited about Cumberland, Ralphsmith and Nyuon. Their highlights reel has standout moments.

Didn’t get the same vibe from the highlights reel of Dow and Martin, but early days. Sometimes the ones you least expect brilliance from ooze it.

The Martin one did not grab me in particular, Geelong says should have went Taheny and the Lions did not match and picked a WA player at 59
