general rule is to never field a punt inside the 10. let it go and it will likely bounce into the endzone for a touchback. You will get the ball at the 20 that way.

Only time you do is if its a sky punt and you are protecting it from being downed inside the 5

Thanks for the explanation, much appreciated. The touchback part makes sense to me but not sure what you mean about protecting the ball inside the 5 on a sky punt.

a sky punt is a short high punt. let the guys on the outside sprint down field to kill the ball inside the 5yd line.

Cheers mate. On the kickoff are they always aiming to kick it dead? (Rugby terminology). And why does the whole team run through end zone when this happens?

I think the answer is that the offensive team has to start from the 25 if the ball is kicked through the endzone?

Most kickoffs are to just change possession. kicking into or through the endzone will have the other team start at the 25. Some teams will kick shorter to force a return and pin them inside the 25.

The kickoff team runs through the endzone because its just something that happens to be a habit type thing. finish the play and dont quit early on the play. the Special teams coach will not play someone who will quit early. and just to keep the mentality of acting like it was a live play and finish the run.

if the kick off goes out of bounds before being touched by a player on the return, they will start at the 40yd line. so its not like a punt where you can angle it to the corner and try to kick it out inside the 10.

Mix of both offence and defense players. most of them will be the backups, but good plays there will help them get more plays with the starters.
