If you look at the advanced stats the midfield was the issue. Jack Steven was at 50%, Armo 47%, Sincs 65% etc. The defenders seemed to be using the ball okay, it was just not making it through the midfield. Looks like Long and Paddy turned the ball over heaps as well. If you kick it out of defence and the mids turn the ball over it keeps coming back in until you concede a goal.

And the lack of attack from defence. Chip chip chip. Easy to pad the percentages and allow the opposition team to set up and turnover. That or the midfielders turning it over.

Anyone who thinks Geary isn't best 22 doesn't know football. He has been excellent in shutting down small forwards for years, and the occasional wingman - his job on Isaac Smith in the last Hawthorn game was a great example of his value.

However....

The game plan can never be to give it to him streaming forward as the person who sets up from defence to attack. That's crap tactically and we have to get the ball in the hands of our betters users. This was just one of the frustrations from 2018 from a coaching perspective. We need to play our players to their strengths, he is not a great kick so don't have a set up that uses him in this way.

Call me a stupid optimist but I'm frothing for rnd 1..

Coff, Hunter, Hanners, Gresh, JB, Paddy, Battle..

Upside enormous

Just gotta get their confidence up early and we can take some scalps
Yeah , chuck in Blake and Longy they are the ones that will decide if we are going upwards or not and a fit Bytel and Max sure wont hurt the cause either, we have the basis for a good team , they just need to play as a team as they have done now and again over the last few years

Bytel and Max will be 2020 and onwards.

They need to get their bodies right. Expect the team to play an aggressive press. Emphasis will be on winning the ball back for an increase in scoring via turnovers.

Looking to play a speedier side to aid this aswell as size on on the boys to improve our ability in the clenches and tackling.

100%. Post wasn’t aimed at you.

Aimed at the people who will be talking rubbish about King looking like a bust because he hasn’t played at round 7 etc

Yeah its cool mate , i didnt take your post that way , i myself have had a laugh at some picking him for having an impact next year , like you said we need to look after Jack and Max and get them right , both quality players and will be for years to come as long as we do the right thing

What’s the vibe on the mature agers?

Sounds like we will be looking to play Young and/or Parker early on if we want some speed and tackling.

interesting to see such a heavy focus on the tackling with the team doing a dedicated training session each week to develop that side of their game .. i gotta say as a fan watching last year the missed tackles and the almost tackles were things that killed us countless times we did all the hard work in pushing a player back and making them change their decision only to give a lettuce leaf type tackle that was busted out of ... i hope this dedicated training on the tackling and the wisdome of Billy Slater in his experiance in his code will see us become more brutal with our tackles ...
my feeling of 2018 is we did a lot of things ok but if we want to make 2018 a one off then we need to push the limit to not just be ok but to become excellent in the areas we can be excellent in ...
Tackling is certainly one of them

I thought tackling- or the quality of tackling has been one of our big problems. We seemed to generally tackle low and allow the opposition to have free arms to release the ball- especially in the midfield. I also think we just didn't look physically strong enough. I hope all this is rectified over summer.

Got to agree with the tackling comment. Bar a few players, I thought our tackling was pathetic.

Players either A. Run too quickly at the opposing player and were side stepped more times than I can remember with just a flailing arms to try and stop them B. Some players corralled the opposition, but they were too far away from them which in turned allowed the opposition time to assess options before firing away a kick or a handball.

We need to be smarter in which we approach and tackle players that for sure.

The aim is to be a strong side without the ball. Pressure tackling shutting down the opposition. The club seems to think if we can do that our forwards will kick more then enough goals. I think if we can become a top notch side without the ball and Gresham or Billings develop into a gun level Mid. We will play finals. Not much difference between a lot of clubs.

This is all very pleasingl

But please tell me there has been a strong focus on our disposal and overall Skills!

Isn’t pressure the basis of Richo’s game plan, at least it was when he started. Is the re-vamped style just going to be a return to what it was in 2016?

I want better ball movement. Richo has been obsessed with pressure and tackling since he got here and it has taken us nowhere.

Any old coach can teach a bunch of professional athletes to tackle and defend.... we need our coaches teaching them and planning how to move the ball through heavy floods and pressure.

We get absolutely murdered by teams that know what our weaknesses are and defend accordingly and have done for years.

Until I see better ball movement, I won’t be getting excited about our prospects. I worry that we are hearing a lot about tackling this pre-season as if that was identified as a major issue for us that stopped us winning games last year. I don’t buy it. Tackling is/should be a given.

Our issue since the start of the rebuild is executing skills under pressure and if we don’t fix that, we are going nowhere.
