I feel people are reducing this discussion about versatility to the point of being overly simplistic.

Of course, Bevo finds versatility in most players to be important but I’m sure this is where it is to the best of their ability and where possible. He doesn’t only want a team full of utilities!

I can guarantee that the approach isn’t that versatility is the only thing that matters or is even the single most important thing. That would differ depending on the context and further it would be one factor embedded in a wide range of others that sometimes conflict (i.e. the need for players with specific attributes in certain positions that complement whatever our given approach is in a game).

Versatility is good but only up to a point. the laws of physics and biology win out. Essendon play Joe Daniher at FF, Caleb Daniel does not play FB.

Unless it is two different matches. Scratch that - Caleb Daniel does not play FB ...... EVER

Of course not....

You don’t play ruckmen at full back !! :p

The versatility thing is overplayed. It's been exacerbated in recent times because we've lacked players that can reliably play an effective role. Bev wants to win and isn't afraid to shuffle things around if players aren't performing their roles well enough. We saw in '16, though, that his vision isn't for musical chairs across the board, it's for having a chunk of players that effectively play their primary role but have the flexibility to move around if things aren't working for us.

Now, I do think younger, developing players would benefit from a bit more consistency in their roles - but that's another question altogether.

You'd want to keep Caleb to play on a decent player, even Rourke Smith would out play Daniher

Daniher is shockingly under rated. Had a poor season in 2018 but he’s a gun. Almost single handidly beat us in 2017.
Only played the 2 games while suffering with OP, then had the rest of the season off. Everyone seems to have forgotten how good he was in 2017. If we could steal any player from a club, I'd be looking at him (although he's basically untouchable)

My problem with the versatility idea is that it comes at the expense of forwards. The only forward that isn't a dual position player is Schache and even then he was tried in the ruck. Greene should be a permanent forward but Hansen has already raised the idea of rotating him through the middle (https://www.westernbulldogs.com.au/video/2018-09-30/hansen-talks-greene). Even Lipinski was on track as a handy goal threat, kicking 8 goals in 4 games, before spending a lot of time on the wing. I get the idea of giving mids a rest but surely between Bont, Macrae, Libba, Dunkley, McLean, Wallis, Williams and whatever other mids might be playing we have a big enough rotation and don't need players like Gowers and Greene as well?

I don't mind the idea of versatility where it suits. Wallis/Maclean rotating through the middle to forward makes sense, Williams/Daniel from half back rotating through the guts, JJ/Suckling/Richards on either flank or wing works. Guys like Schache, Gowers, Wood, Morris, Libba and Dickson should play their primary roles and only get shifted due to injury.

Not such a big fan of throwing around a guy like Naughton around the field. Key position guys take a while to get going. He should be left to develop into a gun backman before he's experimented with up forward.

Boydy singing at the fox footy studios. All dogs players there I think doing camera work. Not sure what it’s for. Looks happy.

Really feel for Caleb Daniel and Will Hayes here, however they can take consolation in the fact that they will not be the last players looking on helplessly like Wil E. Coyote as Ed Richards streaks away from them with ball in hand this season and beyond. Beep. Beep!

Does he have the voice of an angel?

I'm really struggling to contain my excitement with Richards. He's blessed with physical attributes - speed, strength, size. But also (footy) blessed between the ears - skills, decisions, confidence and footy smarts. He's the perfect storm of attributes to have in a footy player.

I love your thinking. A forward is a forward because that is his specialty. They should have thought about that before trying Woody there last year.

Also, from what I saw last season, the Lipinski file is a handy forward, he knows how to play when your scoring end is behind you. He's turning into the most interesting footballer, he looks like he is going to be a beefy type more than a speedster. He's got an overhead game, he's a good ball handler. Lot's of hand and foot skills.
