Both dumb things to say. There’s really no need to put another sport down just because you can’t appreciate it.

This is a footy board. This thread is the preseason thread where people discuss Fremantle’s preseason, and I would guess this is the most anticipated thread of the summer. I commented after a page of banter about soccer clogged the thread.

I grew up with soccer. I understand it. I understand that soccer fans are so simple that many think that the offside rule is complex. It’s advantages are that it’s the incumbent game around the world and that it’s so simple that it can be played in the streets and understood by 5 year olds. But compared to footy, it’s boring, slow, one-dimensional and frustrating as hell. But the rules are simple. Proponents call it “the beautiful game” (it’s not) and claim that it’s a skilful game (I can’t think of a game with lower entrance skills). I’m sure there is a Big Soccer so you could discuss your favourite chants and how much money the players are worth.

My point stands, Mr. Uppity-pants.

I was listening to a podcast about the history of sports and the culture that the society the sport comes from has.

One interesting takeaway for me was that in soccer, they have a tradition of trying to preserve the rules of the game and breaking those rules is punished.

As opposed to American football where you are almost encouraged to break the rules because rule breakers are rewarded with championships and then in the following season the rules would be changed to stop that rule breaking from happening again.

I wonder if Australian rules still had the same rules from 100 years ago what it would look like?

They preserve some rules and create and change others. Not sure where the rules sit with the level of histrionic overacting to try and get the ref to do your work for you.

Quite enjoying some of the media coming out of the pre season camp. I know Lyon has run these before but didn’t they spawn the banana shots off Riewoldt and Dal Santo?

Two massive advancements in soccer history came from teams differing the norm and flirting with the rules, Hungary giving their players numbers not adherent to their position which completely ruined England in the world cup and led to variations of the 2-3-5 - and Scotland for putting away masculine values and deciding to head the ball scandalously and refusing to "play like men" and giving the game another dimension

The same could be said for footy and I would say it.

The playing for free kicks is actually worse in AFL. It’s just in AFL there’s no yellow and red cards so a free kick is a free kick whether it’s Gaff on Brayshaw or a routine free. In soccer players act further to get their team a further advantage. Only difference.

I love both sports but can see there’s significant acting in both. At least with soccer it’s the biggest problem with the sport though...

Back on pre season training . Is it normal practice to have three weeks off at Xmas? Might be my bad memory but didn't think it was that long in previous years .

There are plenty of duckers, divers and and blokes faking being hit high in footy right now....

But anyway, has anyone heard anything new about the gc camp?
