I 100% agree but we need it for lachie Jones how about our second rounder next year and third since our second would be lower

If it is for picks we'd want it this year so we don't have too much deficit. In a year where we didn't have academy bids, your one wouldn't be awful and it's fairly fair.

Numbers reported are 500k x 5 for Caldwell 20yr old who has played 11 games do you blame the guy heck no.

99.99% of AFL players take a deal like that
WTF !?? They really are desperate.
He's maybe worth maybe 300k per on exposed form. I guess coming at the right time when they are losing JD and Saad and HAVE to spend money to keep within the minimum cap spend?
Scrary to think what Rowbottom might get offered in a year or so.

Don't you get more cap space if you pay unders for a couple years? Am I imagining that?
If you paythe cap across all players and pay one gun player 3 million over 3 years. 2 mill in year 1 and .5 in year two and 3 you are paying the cap. It gets you flexibility to later on have the ability to pay other players more and also on front ended contracts. I hope we are doing this. Because when we get the core of our side together we will have a war chest to fill the holes and pick of players to really have a crack.

Our young guns should be in their prime just as Buddy and JPK retire and that will free up at least 1.5 million just in those two alone. Hopefully we can use it to sure up some contracts and get a gun forward or mid to push for a flag.

Now I realize this money would already be factored in to our future plans but hopefully we haven’t spent it all yet.

I just don't know why we'd try and sign Joe Daniher last year, seemed a little early for our list.

That is incorrect - 2005 Premiership - Lewis Roberts-Thompson

Premiership Side

B:Craig BoltonLeo BarryJared Crouch
HB:Ben MathewsLewis Roberts-ThomsonTadhg Kennelly
C:Paul WilliamsAdam GoodesSean Dempster
HF:Ryan O'KeefeBarry Hall (Capt.)Jude Bolton

Without a hyphenator

That team (as does 2012) includes the hyphenator

I just don't know why we'd try and sign Joe Daniher last year, seemed a little early for our list.

An unexpected opportunity for a bargain (potential cheapish $$$$$$), a steal (less competition for sig), build or embellish destination club impression for willing potential marque player, replacement for aging Buddy, and opportunity to reduce impact of the potential Papley loss
The Swans list team handled it magnificently. No harm done and retained Papley.

Lots of things - changed
Naismith goes down (reportedly even before R1)
Franklin despite 2019 R23 good indicators and preseason fitness - BUT did not play:$
Reid always doubtful barely got there either

Could not risk adding another injury plagued sidelined import, with competition for $ and deal. PASS for now, look elsewhere

Swans still need a quality ruckman and a tall KPF who can compete and clunk a mark in order to go forward. Even if Buddy and Reid can play some games in future

All teams need a quality consistent KPF(s)
Richmond have 2, Geelong 1 and now getting 2, Port 1 +(Westhoff gone now) wanting 2 , Brisbane 1 wanting another taking the JD risk, West Coast have 2
Then
....watch the drop off
Membrey and young Max King
Mason Cox and some make do's
Josh Bruce and other assorted spuds

and thats the top 8!

I was assuming we would get a choice between DGB, Phillips and Thilthorpe at our pick.

But if Adelaide got a compensation pick (unknown at this stage), we might end up with a choice between DGB/Thilthorpe or DGB/Phillips.

Though it is always hard to predict which player the Swans recruiting team would really want. I think they also look at a players attitude.
Also, I think we assess for go home factor. Taking into account attitude and go home factor, I wouldn't be surprised if our actual target falls outside of the top half dozen prospect. If this is the case, we would split 3. Just have to look at the left field selection of Stephens above Serong, Young and Flanders and the reasons given for why we picked him (mature, use to living away from home, supportive family etc).

The bonus pool is accounted as allowance in the cap and generally comes from the special marketing fund.

When you actually read half the salary cap rules the VIC loopholes are a joke.

The highest paid afl ambassador isn’t from a non-AFL area or indigenous player or a first generation Australian immigrant....it’s Scott Pendlebury...

like come on wtf

Bang on the money!

Almost hope Adelaide do get a comp pick so they take Thilhorpe with one of them!

Forgive me for sounding like a complete noob. But can someone explain to me the machinations of Adelaide getting a compensation pick. Is that if Brad Crouch leaves the club? How does it become pick 2?

Yep. Assuming we get Campbell and Gulden our list will have 10 locals on it. The higher we can get that number, the more robust will be our sense of identity and club into the future and will protect us into the dark periods.

Seriously? How is Pendles an ambassador! Old Eddie up to his shit****kery again. I get it if Bachar was the top paid ambassador. Or even Buddy..But Pendles haha what a joke!

Honestly, that's quite a bit of reading. Here's a good article that covers the basics of it - https://www.afl.com.au/about-afl/free-agency

In this case, it's assuming that Crouch gets Adelaide Band 1 compo. There are 5 bands
• 1st round (immediately after their pick in that round)
• end of 1st round
• 2nd round (immediately after their pick in that round)
• end of 2nd round
• 3rd round (immediately after their pick in that round)

RFA leave and the AFL compensates the exit club a draft pick. The pick is directly behind that clubs pick in the round depending on a secret formula to identify which band (corresponding to the draft round) only known to AFL House but it has to do with the dollar$ amount of the contract and duration (years) and other subjective considerations.

It is speculated based on historical cases that Band 1 (top compo ) sort of has to be something like $700K + by 4 or 5 years.

Very unlikely for B Crouch. Dropped in a wooden spoon year and denied re sign desire by Adelaide.

I do not often agree with Barrett ... but he says:

IF ...
you add the 11 secret herbs and spices, splash over some hot sauce and garnish with edible flowers ...

THEN ...
even after all that you're not getting a first-round pick as free agency compo for Brad Crouch. Lucky to get a second round, given he's been trying to get out of the joint for two years.

The reference to "herbs and spices" is the CROOKED UNCLEAR discretional right AFL retain to make up the rules as they feel fit.
EG : Gil the Dill might feel sorry for the Crows?????

Nup. Didn't want to be here. Bombers have offered a god father contract. That's the only way their getting him

Totally agree. Also if you watched Open Mike with his father you would understand that there is still some vitriol towards the swans for not picking him up in the draft.

Thanks for the explanation. I understood that they would get a compensation pick if he left being a RFA. But just didn't know the "bands". No way is he a Band 1 compo.

Yep. I agree. Same should apply to Essendon.

If a bloke wants to leave you try to facilitate a decent trade. If you can't do that, in multiple years, then you shouldn't be over compensated when they leave as a free agent.
