12th hardest:

Play twice: Adelaide, Gold Coast, Hawthorn, Western Bulldogs, West Coast

Bye: Round 12

First four weeks: Gold Coast (a), Adelaide (h), North Melbourne (a), West Coast (h)

Pros: Port Adelaide kicks off its 150th anniversary celebrations with a bang and a round two home Showdown. The very first Good Friday game in Adelaide (a round four clash with West Coast) and the traditional Anzac Round game (round six against the Western Bulldogs) should also draw big crowds. Facing Gold Coast in round one should be a nice way to ease into the season.

Cons: The Power's conditioning staff will be working overtime with seven six-day breaks, up from three last season. Hosting Gold Coast on a Sunday afternoon will be a tough sell commercially, while missing out on hosting Richmond and Collingwood at Adelaide Oval is a blow to the bottom line.

Circle it: Showdowns are always special occasions, but this one in round two will have more riding on it for Port Adelaide as it wears its black-and-white prison bars jumper for its 150-year anniversary.

Make or break: A finals berth could be on the line heading into a tough run home against West Coast in Perth, Essendon, Western Bulldogs in Ballarat, and runners-up Greater Western Sydney.

We say: The draw has its challenges, especially from a travel perspective, but the Power are used to the Launceston and Shanghai back-to-back trips. Avoiding any of last year's preliminary finalists in the double-up games is a positive, as is playing Gold Coast twice. Only two Friday night games isn't ideal from a commercial perspective, while the Power also host low-drawing clubs Gold Coast and GW

One of my mates who is a big punter gives a lot of weight to 6 day breaks.

Combined with the travel it makes this draw a lot harder than it looks.

The somewhat annoying thing is that if we were genuinely competing for the flag this would be the perfect draw. Easier start to the year, no terrible double ups, tough run into the finals to test ourselves against the best and no terrible stretches of travel. Hell even playing the Bulldogs in Ballarat should be seen as a win since we're they're worse there than at Marvel and we play that ground okay. Richmond at Marvel is also a minor win for the same reasons.

If by some miracle we actually play really good footy next year (no injuries for once?) then it's the perfect draw for finals. The problem is our team isn't at that level.

OK draw IMO ... I have us with 13 winnable games, plus throw in a few upsets our way ... The big unknown is, how many upsets will we throw away to weaker teams!

In the end, its up to the team now!

I'll take a soft start and confidence building leading into the tough section of the fixture over the alternative - a hard start and taking the foot off the pedal when we hit the easy section of the fixture.

The only surprise is we have just 2 (3 after round 23 is finalised) Sunday twilight games.

If I was to put an overarching theme on our draw, it's unfortunately that the AFL is in cahoots with the 3K's to have Port still stuck with Ken in 2021. A soft draw for who we play, combined with home teams and timeslots that ensure we'll have shit crowds (on top of what they were going to be anyway with Ken still there) to prevent cash for an early payout.

The early Showdown ensures we aren't pulling in any extra people to see the PB's then already would go along to see them later when our season is looking shaky. Plus at round 2 no other teams supporters have jumped off, leaving it as a game of interest for something different, since they've lost hope in their own side.

All in all, if I wanted to screw the PAFC over in both the short term (commercially by poor crowds, TV and hence sponsor appeal) and medium / long term by Ken more likely to linger around yet another year, I'd struggle to put together a draw 'better' to accomplish it. On these measures arguably the worst draw we've ever had, for the affect it will have on the club.

Power president Keith Thomas said…

“2020 is a significant year for us. Putting this fixture together was two years in the making.

“We are really happy with how the AFL have worked with us to accommodate some of our important request to celebrate our 150th.

“We kick the year off with a big start – wearing the prison bars for our home Showdown, Good Friday and Anzac Day games at home and then our ‘Birthday Game’ and a home game against Brisbane to celebrate the ‘04 Premiership.

“We are excited to host a Good Friday game for the first time. We will ensure we are respectful of the day and the occasion.

“Overall, we think it is a fixture that our people will really enjoy.”

Showdowns over by round 13. Seems early, is that a first?
Not only early, but a pretty inequitable setup for the second Showdown as well.

We're coming off the bye for this game. For the Crows, its their last game before the bye.

But who at the AFL keeps thinking that shit like this is a good idea? Thats over a month without a home game that our fans/memberscan attend.
